VIDA NYAGRE YAKONG DATE (SUPERVISOR) i www.udsspace.uds.edu.gh ABSTRACT In 1996, Ghana enacted the Universal Salt Iodization law under the Food and Drug (Amended) Act 523 to achieve 90% household consumption of iodized salt as recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) and United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF). Despite existence of regulation on mandatory iodization of salt for human consumption, implementation of strategies, policies and numerous educational programs, less than half of Ghanaian households are consuming adequately iodized salt. The aim of this study is to assess the knowledge and practices of salt producers and traders on universal salt iodization in ten major salt producing districts. The study was descriptive cross-sectional and the Lot Quality Assurance Sampling (LQAS) methodology was used. The sample size nineteen (19) was selected from each salt producing district which represents the minimum sample size that provided an alpha and beta error of ≤ 10% acceptable for making management decisions at least 92% of the time. Forty five percent (45%) of salt traders were aware of the Universal Salt Iodization (USI) law in the study catchment area. Traders in Awutu Senya, Ningo Prampram and Ada East districts were less aware of the Universal Salt Iodization law. Eighty five percent (85%) salt sample from producers tested above 15ppm and about 51% of the salt samples from traders tested above 15ppm. Traders in Ketu, Gomoa West and Ada East had most of their salt below 15ppm. Salt artisans and most medium scale producers of salt still lack adequate knowledge of salt iodization techniques and are also limited by the lack of access to salt iodization machine and salt iodization input (potassium iodate). Quality control and ensuring that all salt produced is iodize to 50ppm at production site is still a challenge in the ten salt producing districts. Quality controls and enforcement of the USI law through the salt value chain is necessary to achieving USI including Social and Behavioral Change Communication (SBCC) programs to increase knowledge on the benefits iodized salt and awareness of the USI law. ii www.udsspace.uds.edu.gh ACKNOWLEDGEMENT My most profound appreciation and thanks goes to my supervisor for this master piece, Dr. Vida Nyagre Yakong through whom I am able to successfully carry out this study. Box 25, Winneba, Ghana. 4880 Volume 11 No. 3 May 2011 ABSTRACT Globally, it has been estimated that more than 100,000 species of wild plants depend on insects for pollination and reproduction. In Africa, and for that matter Ghana, not much is known about crop pollinators, especially legumes such as cowpea. In Ghana, little is known about even insects that visit the cowpea flowers. However, if the insects that visit the cowpea flowers are known it would serve as a platform to investigate insects that can possibly cause pollination in cowpea. Hence, this study was undertaken to verify the types of insects that visit cowpea flowers in three districts in the Central Region of Ghana. As a result, insects that visited cowpea flowers on surveyed, and the researcher’s own established farms were observed on the petals, tip of the stigma and inside the flowers. Samples of insects collected were identified. Also, percentage frequency of occurrence of the insects on the various parts of the flowers was determined. Differences between total frequencies were determined using chi square (χ²) analysis. The main insects observed on the cowpea flowers were bees such as Apis mellifera, Ceratina sp, Megachile sp, Xylocopa calens, Xylocopa imitator, Braussepis sp., .Lipotriches sp., Melecta sp and Amegilla sp. and other insects, such as thrips, flies, butterflies / moths, beetles, and Dysdercus sp.

The bulk of the production and export comes from arti- sanal and small scale (ASM) producers. This is a research report on strug- gles between a large scale salt company and some communities around the Keta Lagoon in Ghana. At the centre of the conflict is the disruption of the livelihoods of the communities by the award of a concession to a foreign investor for large scale salt production, an act which has expropri- ated what the communities see as the commons around the lagoon where for generations they have carried out livelihood activities which combine fishing, farming and salt production. The Keta Lagoon is the second most important salt producing area in Ghana and the conflict, in which Police protecting the company have shot some locals dead, is emblematic of the wider problem of the status of ASM across Africa with many governments even when faced with the huge potential of ASM avoid offering support to these predominantly lo- cal entrepreneurs and reflexively choose to support large scale, usually foreign, investors.

Different geochemical interpretation methods were used to identify the geochemical characteristics. The pH values of groundwater samples showed that 36 samples had pH values below lower limit of 6.5 WHO (2011). Based on TH, groundwater quality ranges from soft to very hard. The hardness in the study was adduced to be from sedimentary rocks seepage and runoff which may be aggravated by detergents and soaps.
