ARAM, 18-19 (2006-2007) 229-305.A. doi: O'MAHONY 10.2143/ARAM.18.0.2020731 229 CHRISTIAN PRESENCE, CHURCH-STATE RELATIONS AND THEOLOGY IN MODERN JERUSALEM: THE HOLY SEE, PALESTINIAN CHRISTIANITY AND THE LATIN PATRIARCHATE OF JERUSALEM IN THE HOLY LAND ANTHONY O’MAHONY (Heythrop College, University of London) Christianity in the Holy land has found its presence significantly challenged from a number of directions, war, interreligious and ethnic conflict, emigra- tion, and a fragmented ecclesiology, for nearly all of the twentieth century and into the first years of the twenty-first century. But Christianityin the Holy Land is not only of local significance, but is of importance to the identity of the two billion strong world community of churches which make up Christen- dom. The Vatican and the Catholic Church has also taken a strong religious and political interest in the past presence and future configuration of Christian- ity in Jerusalem and in the surrounding states. This paper will seek to firstly, to describe the historical presence of Christianity in the Holy land and relations between churches and state in Jerusalem, especially during the Ottoman and British mandate periods; and the development of early Palestinian Christian political and religious thought. Secondly to look at who are the churches that make up the Christian body in the modern Holy Land, and to describe many of the challenges that face them. The third part will look at in detail the origins and development of the policy of the Holy See to the Jerusalem question and towards Christianity in the Holy Land. -

Breger* The Vatican-Israel Accord of 1993 was clearly a political document- one undertaken between two sovereign states.1 At the same time, there can be no doubt that the Accord would not have been possible without significant change in the traditional theological approach of the Catholic Church towards the people of Israel. Any student of modem Christian- ity will understand immediately the extraordinary changes that have taken place in recent Vatican thinking toward Judaism and the Jewish people. The Catholic Church has made a 180-degree turn in its view of Jews and Judaism since the 1965 Vatican Declaration Nostra Aetate.2 Moving beyond what Jules Isaac termed "the teaching of contempt,"' Catholics now claim that "the Jews still remain most dear to God., 4 In a 1985 statement, the Vatican told us that "Judaism is a living religion" and that the Hebrew Bible "retains its own value as revelation."5 * Visiting Professor of Law, The Catholic University of America, Columbus School of Law. -
