1st Prize Summer Darwin-Dowell 8Q Geography Trip—Malham July 2019

he Geography Department took Year 7 pupils to experience the beautiful countryside of the Yorkshire Dales T National Park. Pupils undertook a 4 mile circular walking route, taking in the famous sites of Janet’s Foss, Goredale Scar and Malham Cove, iconic limestone landmarks. Tired legs were soon replenished with ice creams and the traditional buying of souvenirs at the visitor centre.

Many visitors we came across, commented on the politeness and excellent attitude of the pupils.

Philips High GCSE Geography Cleveleys

ear 10 Geography students, over two days, completed the fieldwork aspect of their GCSE course at Y Rossall Point near Fleetwood. The tide was out, the sun was shining and a pleasant stroll along the beach was had by all, completing data collection techniques on the coastal defence scheme.

Some of the pupils took it upon themselves to volunteer on a beach clean project, picking up plastic and other rubbish that had washed up. Highly commendable!

Rugby World Cup Festival

8 Girls attended a Rugby Festival at Sedgley Park Rugby Club, on Thursday 26th September as part of the Rugby World Cup celebrations. The girls all enjoyed a positive sporting activity together Y with other schools in the area. No one even complained about the rain or the mud!

Anti Bullying Mentors

he anti-bullying mentors went on a course last year to T learn about how to support peers with issues and questions around bullying. They will be going into a year 7 and 8 form regularly to enable younger pupils to get information.

Manchester City

hilips High school are working in conjunction with City Football Club towards an Aspire project qualification. P The pupils above are proudly representing Philips high School.

Manchester Central Gurdwara

n Wednesday November 27th, 38 GCSE students from Years 10 and 11 visited the Manchester Central Gurdwara as part of their Religious Studies GCSE course. Covering their heads as a sign of respect the students were not only treated to a tour of the Gurdwara and a educational talk on the key Sikh beliefs and practises but they also got Oto taste the delicious Langar, the traditional Sikh community meal served to all visitors. The vegetarian potato curry went down a treat with all students.

The trip was very successful and pupils will hopefully utilise what they have learnt in their examinations. Pupils were very respectful and were credited by the Gurdwara as a credit to Philips High School. We hope to go back with another year group later in the year.

This term has been full of exciting opportunities in the Music Department. The term started off with an Instrument Taster session by Bury Music Service. Pupils had the chance to experience new instruments and start lessons.

We have also had several pupils take ABRSM and Trinity Music exams this term. Congratulations to:

Our Christmas Celebration Concert included a wide variety of talent including Dance and Drama alongside Music. This year the vocalists and instrumentalists have been exceptional.

Our annual Christmas Carol Concert took place at All Saints Church on 18th December. Pupils sang and performed festive items of Music, Drama and Readings. Everyone enjoyed singing carols together. This is a special part in our school calendar when everyone gets into the festive spirit.

A special thanks to Miss Williams who is leaving us to be Head of Department at a school in Liverpool. Thank you for being an inspiration to our pupils.

A special thank you to Mrs Dalziel, Miss Dunn & Miss Williams for a wonderful Christmas Concert, Wednesday 11th December.

Maths Without Limits

An Enrichment Day for Girls at Xaverian College was attended by Y11 pupils. The event was organised by the Advanced Mathematics Support Programme.

n Thursday 12th of December, a buzz was felt amongst all year seven pupils... It was the day of the Spelling Bee! This wasn’t just a competition for the best speller, it was a positive exhibition of pupil’s engagement and commitment in English. Since the O start of September, pupils had worked hard every week in English to prepare for the day. Teams assembled from each class and worked together to win the title of Spelling Bee Champion. Every single pupil demonstrated extraordinary spelling skills but the Spelling Champion was awarded to Zainab Ali of 7C. Congratulations to all those who took part on the day and well done to all year seven pupils that have consistently pushed themselves to improve their spelling ability. Shakespeare Schools Festival Performance!

ast March Miss Dunn and Ms Crossley auditioned and cast 16 pupils to perform ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ at this year’s Shakespeare’s School Festival. The Shakespeare School’s Festival is a charitable organisation that gets pupils involved in the performance of L Shakespeare! More information about their work can be found at their website -https:// www.shakespeareschools.org/ The pupils have been working hard since June – taking part in workshops and rehearsals to bring ‘A Midsummer’ to life. The pupils not only performed the original script but added their own creative flare to the performance including physical theatre, soundscapes and even a RAP!

The performance was so well received, and Miss Dunn has had several emails from audience members praising the students for their hard work, professionalism and talent!

The performance night was well attended and several staff came out to support our pupils and watch them shine like the stars that they are!

Thank you to Ms Bruce for supporting the cast at both the workshop and show night, and thank you to Ms Crossley for her early involvement and support too. Another thanks to Mrs Taylor who, at the last minute, ordered all our costume and prop to bring our performance to life!

I am so immensely proud of the pupils who performed, and it has been a pleasure to work with such creative, passionate and talented young people!

Miss Dunn

What are the Bolton Children’s Fiction Awards

he Bolton Children’s Fiction Awards are an annual Award given to works of children’s literature published in paperback during the previous year. The award is run by Bolton School who invite other local schools to take part. T I decided to get involved in the Bolton Children’s Fiction Awards because I think it will improve my English skills. Also, I think it will introduce me to lots of unique books and authors. I am excited to meet the authors and talk about their fascinating books. In the novel “The Lost Magician” we are introduced to four young children who journey into a mysterious world. This resembles the story of Narnia but with immense changes that make it special.

Another amazing story is “Wildspark”, this story revolves around dead people being reborn in robot forms. I wanted to read this book because it seemed like a mystery novel, also a story that persuades you to carry on reading.

In the novel “Clownfish” a boy named Dak who is recovering from his dad’s death, realises he is alive but has been reborn into a clownfish. I found this sad but funny.

LGBT+ organised a cake sale and raised £60

Bury Hospice Pyramid Boxes £197.92

Fun Run activities in the last week of the Summer term, including fancy dress run, cake sale and wet sponge raised just over £780, fantastic effort by everyone .

Christmas Jumper Day, staff and pupils raised money for charity wearing Christmas jumpers on Monday.

Community Food hampers for the elderly YOUNG people at Philips High School are thinking of others this Christmas time.

he Pupil Leadership Team organised the whole school to get involved in the Christmas shoebox appeal in aid of the Manchester Angels. Young people were asked to make up shoeboxes to be given to those in need, T including the homeless.

The wrapped shoeboxes were filled with woolly hats, gloves, socks, toiletries and snacks.

Tina Owens, headteacher, said: "The pupils did amazing and we managed to donate approximately 80-90 boxes. All boxes were delivered to a local lady called Ruth Hannah from Unsworth who collects these for the Manchester Angels each year and she is an asset to the local community. This has been a great cause for our school to become involved in and we will definitely be doing it again next year and urge others to get involved if you have not already done so."

ASDAN

his year Mrs Ascroft, Mrs Hargreaves and Miss Rooney have been working with pupils in years 10 and 11. They have completed many diverse T challenges successfully including, baking, designing an ASDAN plaque, helping out at 'Charlie's Angels' toddler group, money, shopping and banking skills, pet care, tie dying T shirts and interviewing techniques.

The Y10 and Y11 ASDAN Groups have been busy making gifts for the Whitefield Methodist Church where they served tea and cake as part of their service module. They planted small pots of Thyme and gave hand-crafted boxes of chocolate to 30 adults at the church group. They also made a Christmas Cake, complete with marzipan and icing.

The groups have completed a power point presentation which they will deliver to year 7 Religious Studies group in the New Year. We have also begun to 'tame' the Lobjoit Court again with the help of Radcliffe Rotary who have been kind enough to donate some money towards its upkeep. Many thanks to them.

In the spring term, we are planning some visits using public transport which we expect the pupils to help plan and we hope to learn First Aid techniques and have arranged with a firefighter to have a Fire Safety talk. Philips High School Combined Cadet Force

he Philips High School CCF is about to complete its’ first full term. During the past T10 weeks, the cadets have developed their training and have set the foundations for many new skills to be mastered. All cadets now have a full set of uniform, so they look and feel a part of the CCF family. The exception is their berets which will be awarded to them at the Flag Raising Parade in early 2020.

As we are affiliated with the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers, the cadets first trip was to The Fusiliers Museum in Bury where they learned about the rich heritage which they now represent. They have since returned to the Town Centre twice where they have started their training on the L98 Cadet Rifle at the Army Reserve Centre. There are 15 more of these visits booked in for the remaining academic year to ensure our cadets are proficient in Skill At Arms in time for Summer Camp.

Summer Camp has been booked and details of this will be released closer to the time. There are several other trips planned to support the cadets progress and to cement links with other CCF Contingents both locally and internationally.

The Cadets have taken up other opportunities in addition to their Basic Course. Last month we travelled to Liverpool for a STEM activity day which helped show the cadets how STEM subjects are applied in both the Military and civilian careers. This was further supported with the first of three Careers sessions in school.

A selection of cadets also volunteered to take an active roll in Remembrance Day by laying wreaths and writing poetry at the local Cenotaph.

The Philips High School CCF is already making a positive contribution to both the school and local community and we can only see our cadets making exceptional progress in the future. PHS LIBRARY

Basket Ball News

hilips High School have had a fantastic start to the year with the .

Year 10 and year 11 have all managed to win the Bury Schools Championships P beating numerous High Schools across Bury. Each Bury Schools Basketball tournament is now held at Philips High School as we are fortunate enough to have the best facilities around.

Year 7 Jr NBA have drawn one game against Abraham Moss and lost against Canon Slade in the Jr NBA, the year 7 team have some great players with amazing attitude however we have a lot to work on and sure the team will make progress if they continue with the same positive attitude.

Year 8 Jr NBA are yet to play a fixture however will be playing their first game in the first week back after Christmas.

The U14 National School team have played one game against Helsby High School managing to beat them 57 – 27 with a fantastic performance away from home. We still have 2 games to play against St Margaret’s and Rainford high School that will be played in the first few weeks after Christmas as the deadline is 17th January.

The U16 National School team are doing very well so far in the group stages of the competition beating Sale Grammar by 2 points in an absolutely amazing game. The team worked so hard and deserved the win with a few individuals really stepping up the level.

We have been given a bye against St Peters which is good for the U16 team as they are usually one very strong side.

We have two games yet to play against Reddish Vale and Priestnall which will be played th in the first few weeks after Christmas as the deadline is 17 January.

Overall I have been really impressed with the attitude of the Philips High School Basketball players and they are a credit to the school. We need to make sure we continue with the hard work in order to progress through to the next stages of the competitions.

Remember talent is nothing without hard work.

Mr Barlow.

Football News

his year we continue to play 11 a side friendly fixtures with the schools in the south of Bury, including St. Monicas, Parrenthorn, Unsworth T Academy, Prestwich and Hazelwood Academy. All year groups have also been entered in a 7 a side South Bury league, played over a three-week period. The priority is to allow as many players as possible to play football and remain active whilst participating in an activity that they enjoy. Although the results of these fixtures are recorded it is not the most important aspect of the 7 a side tournament.

All year groups apart from the Year 7’s are still in the Bury metro cup competition. The year 7’s lost to a very good . However, Zach Holyoak played extremely well and deserved the Philips High School man of the match award.

In the New year we will play Elton year 8’s and 10’s in the cup fixtures. Elton won two of the age groups in last year’s metro cup competition as well as runner’s up, no doubt they will prove to be a very difficult team to overcome.
