“Fascinating Rhythm”—Fred and Adele Astaire; George Gershwin, piano (1926) Added to the National Registry: 2004 Essay by Cary O’Dell George Gerswhin Fred Astaire Adele Astaire For an artist so synonymous with dance, Fred Astaire is also certainly associated with a wide selection of musical standards—“Cheek to Cheek,” “Top Hat,” “Funny Face” and “Night and Day,” to name just a few. And for a man forever partnered with Ginger Rogers within popular culture, Astaire got his first taste of stardom while still teamed with his talented elder sister and longtime stage co-star, Adele. Both natural-born dancers with unbelievable technique and an innate sense of rhythm, the Astaires began performing as a brother-sister team in vaudeville in the 1900’s. Eventually, they worked their way up to the Orpheum Circuit. Filling their act with songs, sibling teasing and, of course, dance, the duo first appeared on Broadway, in the show “Over the Top,” in 1917. Meanwhile, though the brothers Gershwin, George and Ira, were each having some individual success as Tin Pan Alley tunesmiths in the early 1920’s, they achieved their greatest success when they teamed up together for the Broadway stage and wrote the musical “Lady, Be Good” in 1924. Along with composing that show’s long-enduring title tune, the Gerswhins also wrote “Fascinating Rhythm,” a bouncy duet that Fred and Adele would perform in the show in New York and in London’s West End. They would commit it to record, on Columbia, with George Gerswhin on piano, in 1926. This recording was named to the Library of Congress’ National Registry in 2004.

The Rhythm of Learning: Why the Shortest Distance Between Cultures is Tin Pan Alley By Holly Van Leuven I In the fall of 2010, I began teaching my first English as a Second Language (ESL) class. For eight weeks, nine immigrants from Spain and Russia between the ages of forty and eighty joined me in the tiny office of Operation P.E.A.C.E. in Boston. Our textbook was Steps in Time, the autobiography of American singing and dancing legend Fred Astaire. For homework, my students read through Astaire’s song lyrics. In class, we watched his films. The more my students saw of this cultural genius, the more fluent and eloquent their use of the English talent became to discuss their amazement. How could a man perform like that? they asked, and where did I ever get the idea for this class? The second question proved easier to answer: The idea for this class came from my own love of Fred Astaire’s musicals. His effortless cadence in such routines as “Cheek to Cheek,” the incredible lyrical abilities of Irving Berlin, and the beautiful Art Deco sets of Astaire’s 1930s musicals at RKO Studios never fail to stimulate my imagination. Watching Astaire’s mastery of dance has always inspired me to pursue excellence in my chosen art: creative writing. Who couldn’t benefit from watching these timeless films and listening to these masterful songs? I wanted to find out, and so I brought Fred Astaire to students hoping to improve their English. In the first week of class, my students took turns reading aloud the lyrics of the song, “Cheek to Cheek.” While Irving Berlin’s lyrics are simple and melodious, my intermediate students sought my help in deciphering some of the outdated phrases.

Irving Berlin born Israel Isidore Baline Irving Berlin was born in Tyumen, Russia, on May 11, 1888, and immigrated to New York as a child. He would become one of the most popular songwriters in the United States, with hits like "Alexander's Ragtime Band," “God Bless America,” " Blue Skies,” “What’ll I Do" and "White Christmas." Berlin's film and Broadway musical work included Puttin’ on the Ritz, Easter Parade and Annie Get Your Gun. He died in New York City on September 22, 1989, at age 101. Irving Berlin was born Israel Baline on May 11, 1888, in the village of Tyumen, Russia. His family fled to escape the region's persecution of the Jewish community and settled in New York City in the mid-1890s. As a teen, Baline worked as a street singer, and by 1906 he had become a singing waiter in Chinatown. His first published tune was 1907's "Marie From Sunny Italy," with Nick Nicholson penning the music. As the lyricist, Baline's name was misspelled as "I. Berlin" on the sheet music.
