Non si hanno più parole per commentare i nostri successi che sono così faci- li, così abituali, così spocchiosi, da diventare quasi routine. Siamo in grado di dare agli avversari di turno qualsiasi vantaggio ed è anche successo, a volte. Qualche giorno di pausa, qualche coppia in non perfetta forma, qualche disgra- zia lungo il percorso... niente... noi vinciamo ugualmente e di norma con qual- che turno di anticipo. È successo anche ad Istanbul. Un calo fisiologico negli ultimi turni del round robin ci ha costretto ad una finale anticipata: gli USA negli ottavi. Superato l’ostacolo, pur con qualche patema, la nostra è stata una discesa senza freni ed abbiamo dominato il campo senza soffrire in un solo board. Quarti, semifinali e finale vinti tutti per distacco con gli avversari che, in qualche caso, hanno abbandonato prima del tempo. Pensate che nella semi- finale contro l’ostica Cina, vera sorpresa del campionato, non abbia- mo perso nemmeno un turno finendo come al solito in un canter d’al- lenamento. La finale è stata perfino noiosa e, sopra per più di cento punti a poche mani dal termine, ci siamo potuti permettere di perde- re (finalmente) di una quarantina l’ultimo segmento. Ho fatto tanti sport nella mia vita e tanti ne ho osservati, ma vi giuro che una tale superiorità, una così disarmante egemonia non mi era mai capitato di vederla. La nostra squadra è anni luce davanti al bridge giocato ed è come se si trascinasse appresso tutto il resto del mondo. Dovrebbero studiarci col microscopio, aprirci la teca cranica e guardarci dentro, studiare il nostro albero genealogico e la nostra mappa cromosomica per vedere cosa ha scatenato un simile fenomeno. Quando li angoliz- zo o li guardo di sottecchi dal buco della serratura di internet, i nostri danno la sensazione di giochicchiare al gatto col topo, ogni tanto brandendo una spada ed infliggendo colpi sempre mortali. Mi dispiace che molti di voi non li abbiano mai visti all’opera di persona, perché danno una sensazione di semplicità e di naturalezza addirittura inebrianti. Loro sono il bridge, gli altri, tutti, arrancano.
