CONSTITUTION DAY

The College organized a programme on the Constitution Day (National Law Day or Samvidhan Divas) which is celebrated all over the country on 26th November every year to commemorate the adoption of the Constitution of . On 26th November 1949, the Constituent Assembly of India adopted the Constitution of India, and it came into effect on 26th January 1950. Dr. Baba Saheb Ambedkar is the creator of the Indian Constitution.

Shri H.S.S.Nadkarni, Vice Principal of the college gave a brief introduction to all the staff members about the rights and duties and their relevance in our lives.

Ms. Alka Gawas read the Preamble in hindi which was repeated by the staff. She also addressed the gathering on this occasion:

Title: FLAG DAY Date and year: 7th December 2019 Organising NCC Unit of Our College Committee Objective: To express gratitude and appreciation to the current and veteran military personnel of India and to acknowledge those who died in service to the country. Summary of the The Armed Forces Flag Day or the Flag Day of India was celebrated by our NCC proceedings Unit on 7th December 2019. The Armed Forces Flag Day or the Flag Day of India is a day dedicated towards collection of funds from people of India for the welfare of the Indian Armed Forces personnel. It has been observed annually in India on December 7 since 1949. Over the years, it has become a tradition to commemorate this day as an honour to the soldiers, airmen and sailors of India. Immediately after India achieved independence, a need arose for the government to manage the welfare of its defence personnel. On August 28, 1949 a committee set up under the defence minister decided to observe a Flag Day annually on December 7. The idea behind observing a Flag Day was to distribute small flags to the general population and in return collect donations. Flag Day gains more significance as it considers that it is the responsibility of the civilian population of India to take care of the families and dependents of the armed forces personnel who fight for the country. , who was then , on December 7, 1954 said. Significance and purpose The Flag day is mainly observed to serve three basic purposes Rehabilitation of battle casualties Welfare of serving personnel and their families Resettlement and welfare of ex-servicemen and their families.

The Armed Forces Flag Day commemoration and the collection of funds through distribution of flags. It is a time for Indians to express its gratitude and appreciation to the current and veteran military personnel of India and to acknowledge those who died in service to the country. On the Flag Day all three branches of the Indian armed forces, the , the and the , arrange a variety of shows, carnivals, dramas and other entertainment programmes to showcase to the general public the efforts of their personnel to ensure national security. Throughout the country small flags and car flags in red, deep blue and light blue colours representing the three Services are distributed in return for donations. Flag Day Fund The original Flag Day Fund was set up in 1949, by the Defence Minister's Committee. In 1993, the Defence Ministry of India consolidated related welfare funds into a single Armed Forces Flag Day fund. Those funds include, Amalgamated Special Fund for War Bereaved, War Disabled and other ex- Servicemen/Serving Personnel Flag Day Fund St Dunstan's (India) and Fund collection The fund collection is managed throughout the country by the by local arms of the Kendriya Sainik Board (KSB), which is part of the Ministry of Defence. The fund collection is organised both by official and non-official means through voluntary organisations. The Fund is operated by a Managing Committee presided over by the Defence Minister of India at the Centre and by the executive heads of the governments in the States and Union Territories. When the Armed Forces Flag Day programme was introduced, the fund allocation was managed in such a way that the Central KSB headquarters is given only a very small share of the Flag Day Fund collections made by each state. The allotted fund for the KSB is only half a paisa per individual in the state.

Summary of As the part of continuous practice, on 1st August 2019 the Department Of Languages the Of Parvatibai Chowgule College (Autonomous) had celebrated LokmanyaTilak Death proceedings Anniversary in upper auditorium of the college. The main objective of organising the program was to remember the great Indian leader, LokmanyaTilak and his thoughts. The department has also organised essay writing competition for the students. Dr. TukaramRongte, the head of department of Marathi of Pune University was present as the chief guest on the occasion. REPORT Title: Kargil Vijay Diwas 2019 Date and year: 26th July 2019 Venue: Lower Auditorium Organising NCC Infantry wing unit of Parvatibai Chowgule College of Arts and Science Autonomous Committee Objective: This program was conducted to commemorate the 20th Anniversary of victory. Summary of At the beginning in charge of Infantry wing unit of college Maj. Dr. Gunaji Desai briefed the the cadets about the significance of the program organized without making a plastic banner proceedings which is an initiative towards safeguarding our environment. He also highlighted the achievements of the soldiers during the Kargil war. A documentary on the Kargil War was screened in the auditorium and was appreciated by the cadets. Cadet Jay Dabholkar and SW Cadet K. M. Dharani shared their thoughts on the Kargil Vijay Diwas. SD Cadet Hrishikesh Chanekar and SW Cadet Rayzel Fernandes spoke about their aspirations and desires of joining NCC at Chowgule college. This was followed by a question answer session. 48 cadets attended this special program. Senior cadets Travassos Smyra and Sanadi Faiza were instrumental in providing assistance for conducting the program smoothly.

REPORT Title: “SHRAMDAAN” Date and year: 2nd October 2019 Venue: College Quad Organising NSS Unit Committee Objective: To commemorate 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi and to in calculate the importance of cleanliness. Summary of The activity began at 9:30 a.m. in quad with Swacchata oath sworn by Dr. Devashish the Bagchi which was followed by 77 teaching staff, 36 non-teaching staff and 197 NSS proceedings volunteers (166 female and 31 male). It was followed by a talk on single use plastic by Prof. Amisha Shirodkar. Later, Dr. N. N. Sawant, Principal spoke on Gandhi Jayanti and also stressed on the importance of cleanliness. Later, SHRAMDAAN was carried out wherein all the participants were distributed in five groups and were allotted 5 different areas of the college campus. It included 2 wheeler parking area, four wheeler parking area, area near canteen, woods, and tiger activity centre. All the staff as well as NSS volunteers actively participated in this cleanliness drive and collected all the accumulated waste from in these areas. Special care was taken to segregate the plastic and other non-biodegradable waste from the biodegradable waste. The teaching staff also contributed towards cleaning the staff room in addition to cleaning the allotted college campus area. The function started with the floral tribute to Shri. Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel given by college Principal, Dr. Nandkumar N. Sawant followed by the speech of Ms. Vanessa Colaco on the legacy of Shri. Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.

Later, Principal Dr. N. N. Sawant addressed the function and stressed on the unity prevailing in our college. Rashtriya Ekta Diwas Pledge was taken by Prof. Ashish Ashwini which was followed by all the teaching and non-teaching staff present for the event.

Vote of thanks was given by Prof. Ashish Ashwini. Finally, the Programme concluded with the National Anthem.

REPORT “SHRAMDAAN DIWAS” (150th Birth Anniversary Of Mahatma Gandhi 2nd October 2018)

1. The N.S.S. Programme officers along with the students of the NSS unit of the college organised “Prabhaat Feri” on the occasion of 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi on 2nd October, 2018. 97 N.S.S. volunteers participated actively in this rally. The rally aimed to spread the message of cleanliness to the society through various posters and slogans. Later, at the college campus all the staff of the college along with the N.S.S. volunteers took “Swacchhata Pledge” near the college map. Soon after the pledge, 115 N.S.S. volunteers joined for “Shramdaan” to commemorate Gandhi Jayanti. Vice Principal garlanding Mahatma Gandhi

Every staff of the department in the college participated in cleaning their cabins, cupboards and the department or office areas, making the surrounding healthy place for working.

3. Awareness Rally on ‘Cleanliness’ in the surrounding slum area of Motidongor from Margao in South Goa District NCC cadets from Parvatibai Chowgule College organized Awareness Rally in the surrounding slum area of Motidongor from Maragao in South Goa District on 2nd October 2018. The motivated volunteers from surrounding locality and some citizens from the slum area also participated in the cleanliness awareness drive. These volunteers who participated in this activity include RSS volunteers also. They cleaned the Government Primary School class rooms.

The selected NCC cadets along with the ANO visited the area at 8.45 a.m. The program was inaugurated at the hands of Maj Dr. Gunaji Desai by garlanding the photographs of Mahatma Gandhiji and Lal Bahadur Shastriji. The students and teachers sang famous Bhajan of Mahatma Gandhiji Raghu Pati Raghav Raja Ram.

Our cadets presented street play for the benefit of school children, teachers and the residents of the locality. The topics covered in the street play were importance of cleanliness, personal hygiene, taking care of public places, open defecation, saving water, use of cloth bags, segregation of waste at source. It was largely attended by the people of the locality.

After the street play the cadets along with a group of four to five students from the primary school visited the households and explained the importance of health, hygiene and sanitation. The cadets explained about segregation of waste in to wet waste and dry waste. They also emphasized on the usage of cloth bags instead of plastic bags. Some residents also participated wholeheartedly in the drive. Some cadets also assisted in the cleanliness activity of the Temple premises of Shri Renuka Devi situated in that area.

The teachers, RSS volunteers, residents of the locality, students and some local youth were motivated to achieve the objectives of the special drive organized under the guidance of Dr. Major. Gunaji Desai and the cadets of our college.

Prior intimation was given to the Headmistress of the school and under Chalo school Mega Drive initiative small street play was presented by the volunteer of Chalo School Mega Drive. The students of the Primary school also presented a small skit during the inauguration program.

Preparatory meetings were conducted and the entire program was done successfully.

Attended by 04 teachers and 80 students from Govt. Primary School, Motidongor, more than 200 residents of Motidongor.

Title: AWARENESS RALLY ON “ENROLMENT OF PEOPLE ON THE ELECTORAL ROLL” Date and year: 5th October 2018 Venue: Rumdamol-Davorlim, Margao Organising NSS Unit of Parvatibai Chowgule College of Arts and Science, Autonomous Committee Objective: To spread the awareness on the importance of enrolment on electoral roll among the local people. Summary of NSS Unit of Parvatibai Chowgule College of Arts and Science, Autonomous organized an the awareness rally on “Enrolment of People on the Electoral Roll” on 5th October 2018 at proceedings adopted village Rumdamol-Davorlim, Margao. It was organized to spread the awareness on the importance of enrolment on electoral roll among the local people. The three NSS Programme officers Mr. Pradeep Jatal, Dr. Mayuri Naik and Mr. Ashish Ashwini along with Dr. Sachin Kakodkar and 33 NSS volunteers (5 male and 28 female) participated in this activity.

REPORT Title: Hiroshima Nagasaki Day Date and year: 9th August 2018

Organising Department of Geography Committee Objective: To pay homage to the victims of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and to incalculate importance of “Peace and Harmony” amongst the student. Summary of “There are no victors in the war”, said Adv. Cleofato Almeida Couthino, Chief Guest on the the 73rd Anniversary of Hiroshima-Nagasaki bombing observed by the Department of proceedings Geography of Parvatibai Chowgule College on 9th August 2018. He recalled the Americans prisoners of war imprisoned in Hiroshima and Nagasaki who also died during the bombing event. He also recalled the innocent Goans who worked on ship and lost their lives during the World War II. He further emphasized on the continuing threat of nuclear proliferation and nuclear testing by the world leaders so as to safeguard one’s own nation against others which will only wipe out millions of innocent lives, causing long term devastating effects to human health and environment.

Every year on this day, the faculty and students gather for the solidarity event to pay homage to the victims of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. This year the theme was “Peace and Harmony”. An intra-collegiate poster competition was held on the theme for the students of Chowgule College. Dr. Anagha Bicholcar, Head of Geography Department formally welcomed the audience and gave a brief introduction of the day and a short documentary on Hiroshima-Nagasaki bombing was shown.

Ms. Moana Saito (TYBSc), a student of Chowgule College from Japan who personally visited the bombing site of Nagasaki the previous year shared her views and opinions on bombings in Japan. She was deeply saddened by the heinous deed of the Americans and the continued after-effects of the bomb such as radiation poisoning amongst the survivors.

The GLOBE (Geographers Loving Our Beautiful Earth) members made one hundred origami cranes and lanterns which is, to this day, a symbol of the innocent victims of nuclear warfare.

From Hiroshima to Hope created by local peace, faith and community organizations every year since 1984 in Seattle advocates for world peace and against nuclear proliferation. They hope "We can resolve international conflicts without violence, and learn the habit and technique of living in peace with all our neighbors on this earth."

A poster competition was held on the same theme for all the students of the college. Princy Mishra (SYBA) and Swella Correia (SYBA) bagged the first place and Madhura Naik (FYBSc) and Rukma Khanolkar (FYBA) bagged the second place for the competition.

REPORT Voters Awareness Program 19th October, 2018

Systematic Voters Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEP) for 30-Fatorda Assembly Constituency was organized at Parvatibai Chowgule College of Arts and Science (Autonomous) on 19th October, 2018 in the Upper Auditorium between 9:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m.

This special program was organized as an initiative of Electoral Registration Officer ERO for 30-Fatorda Assembly Constituency and Assistant Electoral Registration Office AERO for 30- Fatorda Assembly Constituency.

All the Booth Level Officers (BLO) from Fatorda Constituency attended the program.

17 students born before 1st January, 2001 attended this program.

In the beginning Nodal Officer of our College, Major Dr. Gunaji Sadanand Desai welcomed the officers from the ERO & AERO office. He told the students to participate in the Special Summary Revision of Photo Electoral Roll 1st September, 2018 to 31st October, 2018 Drive. The email informing the students about the entire process for Systematic Voters Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEP) were sent to all the students of our college.

The BLO and the administrative officers demonstrated and assisted the students while registering online on the website www.nvsp.in and resolved the queries.

The Students who brought the required soft copies of their documents completed the registration formalities.

The entire program was co-ordinated by the Nodal Officer for Elections, Parvatibai Chowgule College Maj. Dr. Gunaji Sadanand Desai and was assisted by Ms. Epifania Quadros, Secretary –Dept. of English, Konkani and NCC for the administrative support.

REPORT: SPECIAL LECTURE ON THE ‘CONSTITUTION OF INDIA’

As a part of the Constitution of India week celebration held from 19th to 25th January 2018, an initiative of Honourable Governor of Goa, Smt. Mridula Sinha in coordination with the Directorate of Higher Education, Government of Goa and Department of Political Science, Goa University; a special Lecture was organized related to Constitution of India and its importance on 25th January 2018 in Parvatibai Chowgule College of Arts and Science (Autonomous), Margao. It was coordinated by Department of History. A warm welcome and introduction was given by Ms. Yogeeta Lopes, Assistant Professor, Department of History. Thereafter the seven speakers from Legal Aid Clinic, Margao of Govind Ramnath Kare College of Law delivered their lectures on the topic “The Significance of Indian Constitution and Privacy in the Age of Publicity”. - Neysa A. G. De Souza delivered on ‘The significance and the salient features of the Indian Constitution’. - Aditi A Narvekar delivered on ‘Right to Privacy’ highlighting article 21 of India’s Constitution. - Lilly A Fernandes delivered on ‘Privacy of Thoughts and Feelings’. - Saisha P. Kerkar delivered on the ‘Data Privacy’ in the Age of internet. - Brinkley Gomes delivered on ‘Defensive Privacy’ - Valanka De Melo delivered on ‘Advantages and Disadvantages of Electronic Surveillance’ - Sanjana Dessai delivered on ‘Exception to Right to Privacy’ and also presented a case study of a patient against a hospital.

This was followed by a brief question-answer session. The programme concluded by the Vote of Thanks by Ms. Sherianne Coutinho, a Second Year student of Department of History.

This special lecture was attended by the Dean, Faculty of Social Science, Dr. Debasish Majumdar and ten other faculty members and seventy two students of the college.

The event was coordinated by Sarita Naik Tari, Associate Professor, Head of Department of History, Fravina Rebello and Yogeeta Lopes, Assistant Professors in Department of History. Ms. Bhavana Sawardekar, Secretary of Deans (Faculty of Science, Social Sciences, Languages and Literature) provided the logistics and assistance in organizing the event.

Photography was done by the Tiger Studio of Parvatibai Chowgule College of Arts and Science (Autonomous). Refreshments for the speakers, faculty and volunteers were served in the Tiger Centre.

To make students realize the importance of Lokmanya tilak’s Thoughts in today’s world a special talk was organized by Department of Marathi. Dr. Sanjay Mestri,, was invited as the main speaker deliver a talk to students. This year the proceedings theme is “Family Planning is a Human Right.” The Department of Geography this year decided to observe this day along with other college students from the State.

The hosts for the day, Ms. Radhika Raikar and Ms. Sarina Bagali (MA Geography Students) welcomed the gathering and gave a brief introduction about the day. Dr. Nandkumar Sawant, Principal of the college was the Chief Guest and he delivered a special lecture related to the theme. He highlighted on the empowerment of women and reducing poverty in developing nations. To mark the day, a short documentary on family planning was projected. Towards the end, the vote of thanks was proposed by Ms. Vijaya Patil (MA Geography Student). After the program, an inter-collegiate quiz competition was held where students from other colleges participated. The quiz was hosted by Mr. Dwayne Fernandes (MA Geography Student). The theme of the quiz was based on Population of India with special reference to Goa based on aspects like migration, population distribution and growth.

The team from Government College Khandola, emerged First Prize Winners, while Government College Sanquelim and Shree Mallikarjun College, Canacona won second and third place respectively.

The World Population Day was coordinated by Mr. Adrian Ferro and Mr. Kiran P. Naik, Assistant Professors.

Title: PRERNA DIWAS Date and year: 27th February to 1st March 2018

Organising Deans of the College Committee Objective: To enhance the capability of thinking powerful ideas and helping the society with their innovations, wherein students will develop confidence in them by presenting their posters to their juniors enabling them gauge ideas.

Summary of the In India 28th of February is observed as “National Science Day or the Prerna Diwas” proceedings to commemorate the discovery of the ‘Raman Effect’, a Nobel Prize winning discovery by Sir C.V. Raman.

This year “Prerna Diwas” was celebrated in a very unique way in the college by sharing third year B.Sc./B.A. student’s innovative project ideas with their juniors using the Poster presentation, with the objective of motivating first year and second year students to think of an innovative and novel ideas for their third year Project.

We believe that our students have the capability of thinking powerful ideas and helping the society with their innovations. Thus the innovative way of celebrating Prerna Diwas will definitely motivate students to think of various innovative ideas and implement the same innovative idea for their third year projects that will lead to new invention or possibility of emerging as an entrepreneur.

The Deans (Faculty of Science, Social Science and Languages and Literature) organized “Prerna Diwas” on three days from 27th February to 1st March 2018 between 10.00 a.m. to 12.00 p.m.

First day [27th February 2018] was allotted to Social Science departments: All the third year students displayed the Posters (as per the standards provided) of their third year projects in the Quad. Streams such as Economics, History, Sociology, Philosophy, Psychology and Geography department Projects were displayed. Total 26 projects were displayed out of 28 projects. Total 121 First and Second year students and 28 staff members went through these project posters ideas. The third year students also

were very enthusiastically explained/presented their project ideas to students and staff members.

Second day [28 th February 2018] was allotted to Science departments: All third year B.Sc. students displayed their third year project’s Posters (as per the standards provided). On this day the Botany, Zoology, Geography, Computer Science, Geology and Biotechnology project Posters were displayed in Tiger Quad. Whereas, Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry project Posters were displayed in Tiger Ghol. Very interesting 53 projects projects (out of 65 projects) were displayed by students. More than 190 First year and Second year students along with approximately 60 staff members attended this program.

Third day [1st March 2018] was allotted to Languages and Literature departments: All third year students from Languages and Literature departments displayed their Posters (as per the standards provided) in the Quad. The departments such as English, Marathi, Konkani, French, and Hindi department students displayed their third year projects. Total 20 projects were displayed out of 21 projects. 63 First and Second year students attended the program.

It was well planned event and executed in a very systematic order with the help of Deans, teachers students and Volunteers. The third year project posters were put forth before their juniors (F.Y. and S.Y. students) that helped in understanding the concept of their project and the hardships that they went through while doing this project. Many junior fellows showed eagerness in knowing what were the different projects displayed and how they did these projects and various methodologies involved in getting the projects done. These presentations gave ideas for the second years how to frame a project for their third year. It also inspired some students to select a specific topic for their project and also decide whether to do the project in a group or individual. Overall the event served what it means “Prerna Diwas” an Inspiration day.

Feedback: There was very good feedback given by 90% students indicating the project presentations have helped them or inspired them to plan for next year. Few of the third years were grumpy because they were not attaining and no marks for this presentation.

The programme was well planned and organized by Ms. Shaila Ghanti, Ms. Mitra Borkar and Dr. Debasish Majumdar .

Planning, coordination and logistic support was provided by Ms. Bhavana Sawardekar with the support of volunteers. On the third day of Prerna Diwas there was a group picture of all volunteers and the event was concluded.

Summary of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki Day was observed on Wednesday 9th August 2017. The proceedings theme of the programme was “Remember Hiroshima and Nagasaki: Being at peace and not in pieces”. REPORT Title: INDIAN ARMED FORCE DAY Date and year: 7th December, 2017

Organising NCC Unit of our College Committee Objective: To remember the sacrifices made by our gallant soldiers, sailors and airman in defending the integrity and honour of our Nation.

Summary of the NCC cadets of our college organized Indian Armed Force Flag Day on 7th December, proceedings 2017. The Armed Forces Flag Day is commemorated to remember the sacrifices made by our gallant soldiers, sailors and airman in defending the integrity and honour of our Nation.

The Department of Sainik Welfare had made an appeal for liberal donations, as a gesture to re-assure our serving and retired defence personnel, their widows and dependents.

Staff members contributed a total of Rs. 5400/-.

REPORT Title: ‘LOKMANYA TILAK PUNYATHITHI’ Date and year: 1st August 2017 Venue: Auditorium Organising Department of Marathi, Konkani & Hindi Committee Objective: To make students realise the importance of Lokmanya Tilak’s thoughts in today’s era. Summary of The cultural history of Lokmanya Tilaks literature is studied in the curriculum of Marathi the subject, hence every year on 1st August the department of Marathi organises a special talk proceedings & conducts essay writing completion on the occasion of ‘Lokmanya Tilak Punyatithi’.

This year the department of Marathi in association with the department of Hindi & Konkani invited Dr. Avinash Avalgaonkar, Head, Department of Marathi, Savitribai Phule Pune University as chief guest & to deliver a special talk on ‘Lokamanya Tilak’s Contribution in Social and Political Field’ on 1st August 2017.

Winners of Essay writing competition were awarded prizes at the hands of chief guest.

The program was attended by 65 students and 10 teachers of Department of Marathi, Konkani, Hindi.

REPORT Title: INTERNATIONAL HUMAN RIGHTS DAY Date and year: 10th December, 2017 Organising NCC Unit of our College Committee Summary of the NCC Unit of our College celebrated ‘International Human Rights Day’ on 10th December, proceedings 2017. “The college students must concentrate on their studies and associate themselves with the programmes to educate the masses regarding healthy style of living. We the soldiers protect the boundaries of our nation from enemy, so that our fellow countrymen can lead a very peaceful life. Hence a all the NCC Cadets were asked to a pass on the message of ignoring the small mistakes and problems faced by us. If they are not tackled at initial stages these small mistakes and problems will ruin our life in near future”, said the chief guest Naib Subedar Hast Bahadur Thapa from 1 Goa BN NCC, Panaji Goa while addressing the NCC Cadets of Parvatibai Chowgule College during the function organized by the NCC Unit of Parvatibai Chowgule College to commemorate the International Human Rights Day.

Cleanliness Drive was conducted in the campus and effective ways of managing wastage generated on college campus were discussed.

In the beginning Major Dr. Gunaji Sadanand Desai, Company Commander, NCC Unit of Parvatibai Chowgule College briefed the NCC Cadets about the importance and relevance

of celebrating International Human Rights Day. He also introduced the chief guest. Further, he appealed the NCC Cadets that they should see that the poorest of the poor has to get opportunities to acquire the basic needs in their day to day life. Today’s youth has to associate themselves for facilitating the process of protecting the opportunities and the rights of common citizens.

During this function Sgt. Manthan Naik, Sgt. Vidhyashree Chimmalagi, Cpl. Maria Sevina D’Souza and Cpl. Shubham S. Chodankar were appreciated for their participation in the various NCC activities.

REPORT Title: WORLD POPULATION DAY Date and 11th July 2016 year: Organising Department Of Geography Committee Summary of The planet and its resources are finite, but if men, women, and children are empowered with the health, human rights, and information about the environment - population dynamics will proceedings change, improving the health and prosperity of people, families, and the earth. Keeping this thought alive, the Department of Geography and Research Centre of Parvatibai Chowgule College, observed the World Population Day. The department decided to celebrate the spirit of women and formulized its theme as "Little Girls with dream become Women with vision". The event began at 10:30a.m with a speech by Dr. Nandkumar N. Sawant, Principal, which enlightened on the influential young ladies of the world and their role in building up a good society. He also highlighted the current issues faced by women and recommended solutions for the same. The speech was followed by on-stage and offstage competitions; namely Just - a - minute, Quiz competition, Debate, Poster making, and Photography. The motive behind the competitions was to appreciate the empowered women who with their hard work and determination changed the outlook of the society towards women. REPORT Title: Hiroshima Nagasaki Day

Date and 9th August 2016 year: Organising Department of Geography Committee Summary of Every year, the Department observes Hiroshima Nagasaki day in remembrance of the atomic bombings the on the Japanese towns of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The idea of this programme was to pay homage to proceedings the victims and give everyone the reflection on the horrors of war and the danger of technology. This year it was observed on 6th August. The main theme of this day was “REMEMBER HIROSHIMA & NAGASAKI: A COMMEMORATION FOR LIGHT AND PEACE”. Lanterns were lit to commemorate the anniversary of the bombing. This is a mark of respect just the way Japan follows to pay tribute to the victims. Also origami paper cranes were distributed which signifies the symbol of peace in Hiroshima and which relates to Sadako Sasaki, a 12-year-old girl who lost her life due to radiation caused by the bombing. The commemoration began with a welcome speech proposed by Miss Deeksha Naik, a Post Graduate student, as she emphasized on the importance of the day. One minute silence was observed to pay homage to the victims. Carrieann D’Costa, Post Graduate student along with her group sang a song “Heal the World” by Michael Jackson. This song expressed that one can change the world from what it has become and make it a better place and it signifies world peace. Miss Yogita Yadav, student of M.A Geography prepared a video on “Hiroshima: Past and Present” depicting the bombings, the present life of the people who have survived from the bombings and how Japan emerged as a powerful nation. The Principal Dr. Nandkumar Sawant highlighted the greatest acts of terrorism in human history. Mr. Prasanna Uttagi, a prominent member of All India Peace and

Solidarity Foundation (AIPSO), Goa Chapter, was also present. Adrian Ferro, Assistant Professor, Department of Geography and Research Center was the Coordinator of the programme. Apurva Desai, Siddhi Gaonkar and Diksha Naik were the volunteers. Lastly, a short documentary named, “Hiroshima - after 24 hrs" was screened. The video showcased the victims sharing their experiences and the scars it left on their psyche.

The youth play an important role in nation development and building. As such, sensitizing them about current issues and challenges is the need of the hour. Department of Geography has been playing its part in creating awareness about global issues by organizing various events. One such event is World Population Day.

World Population Day is observed all over the world on the 11th of July to address the issue of rising population, its impacts and solutions. The department too, promoted this awareness campaign in accordance with the United Nations theme announced for the year 2015: “Vulnerable Populations in Emergencies”.

Ms. Juliana Lohar, Coordinator, Anyay Rahit Zindagi (ARZ), Vasco, Goa, who was the Chief Guest for the programme, delivered a special lecture on “Vulnerable Populations” for students and faculty of the college. Citing example of the recent Nepal earthquake, she enlightened the audience on the problems faced by the displaced populations in times of disasters and emergencies, and urged the young population to be cautious during such situations.

Various competitions were organized for the students on the given theme. Ms. Shreya Jain (SYBA), Ms. Pearl Oliveira

(TYBSc Physics) and Mr. Elcome Fernandes (TYBSc Geology) won the first place at Elocution, Poster and Essay Competitions respectively.
