The Community Council for Somerset (CCS) is delighted to announce the launch of a new venture – the Somerset Community Oil Scheme, which will be good for individuals, good for the environment and good for CCS.

The scheme uses the model of a local buying syndicate for domestic heating oil but will roll it out across the county of Somerset. Even with the scheme in its infancy, experience has already shown that it’s possible to make a saving of around £40 on a single order. Individuals, community organisations and businesses can join the scheme for an annual membership subscription of £20, £30 and £100 respectively.

CCS is keen to emphasise the environmental benefits too. Delivery tankers guzzle a lot of fuel and the more deliveries they can make in one place, the less fuel they use. And the fewer tankers there are on Somerset’s small country roads, the better. As a charity that is rooted in supporting action in local communities, CCS wants the new venture to reflect this philosophy. To find out more visit www.somersetrcc.org.uk/oil, or call 01823 331222 or e-mail: [email protected] Hello from Liz, your new editor.

Although a relative newcomer to the village (about 18 months ago), I have lived “on the levels” for about 24 years, and have come to call this place home. Being able to contribute in some small way to my community pleases me no end!

The first thing that has struck me is how much is going on in this village, and how little room we actually have to report on it all! Apologies to any contributor I have had to edit to make room for all. I hope too that the print isn’t too small or too cramped for readers who (like me!) aren’t so sharp eyed as they once were. Now for a request. I know how important this magazine is to our community. My aim is to continue a long and valuable tradition, whilst adapting to the needs of a changing world. So, I need FEEDBACK! What would YOU like to see included in your Parish Magazine? Do you have any suggestions? Ideas? Complaints? I am all ears!

There will be a few changes for our advertisers in the New Year, but I’ll be letting all current advertisers know in good time for our next issue in Feb 2012. If you would like to be put on that mailing list, just let me know (by email is best)

As a busy working mum I can be quite difficult to get hold of during the day. After 7pm is usually a good time to phone, and anytime by email (contact details on inside page).

I look forward to getting to know you all better over the next few months. Liz Sparkes Contract for Cleaning of CSM Parish Bus Shelters

The TME should have a separate agreement directly with the PC as Trustees. It was necessary to continue to have ‘grass route’ sports ie football, rugby and cricket in order to qualify for any potential grants. The revised Adsborough Bus Stop options were discussed and it was agreed to pursue these along with the neighbouring Parish Council to see if these could be implemented.

Helping Visually Impaired People in Your Area

Somerset Sight is a long established local charity that helps visually impaired people. Volunteer visitors assist people in their homes with everyday tasks such as reading mail, paying bills or even just the chance for a good old fashioned chat. A regular visit to help with all sorts of tasks and activities enables them to maintain a busy and fulfilling life and long lasting friendships are formed. I am sure you would enjoy being part of a team who like to help local people and no experience is necessary as training is provided.

If you have just a couple of hours a fortnight to spare, I would like to invite you to join my team of volunteer visitors, covering the Creech St Michael and area, where there are several people waiting for your help.

The beginning of the new school year seems a long time ago and the children are happily established in their new classes. Staff began the year with Child Protection updates and a much needed “tidy up” in school.

We had some redecoration done over the holidays – two of the classrooms were repainted, the hall floor was repaired and the playground was marked out with a netball court and some other games such as hopscotch. We are hoping to have our smallest classroom extended over the autumn half term.

As well as all the usual lessons going on, our six and seven year olds are taking part in “Forest School” sessions using our lovely grounds and several classes have been out and about around the village. Years 3 & 4 have visited Cold Harbour Mill, dressed as Victorians to learn more about Victorian times. We have a whole school topic on India beginning after half term and would really appreciate any input from members of the community who have any knowledge or artefacts in connection with this.

We have just had a Roald Dahl Day to raise money for sick children with life long conditions. The children dressed as characters (such as Charlie of the Chocolate Factory and the Enormous Crocodile) from famous Roald Dahl Books. The children did lots of book related activities and had a lovely time.

We held our harvest festival in the church and the children sang songs and read their own poems and prayers on a traditional harvest theme. Gifts of non perishable items were donated to support the Open Door Charity for homeless people.

Year 6 (Ages 10 and 11) will be beginning to get excited about their residential visit to the outdoor activity centre Kilve Court. They will take part in a range of activities including archery, wall climbing, beach study, walking etc. This will be a good opportunity to build team work skills and also to develop independence.

Further on the horizon are our school nativity plays and carol service. We are going to have our carol service in the evening of Thursday 15th December at 6.30 in the church. We hope that more parents will be able to attend with this change in timings.

Members of the community are warmly invited to come and see the school at work on our open morning of Wednesday 16th November. This will be advertised more widely nearer the time but will be an opportunity for prospective parents (or just people who would like to know more about the school) to find out about us. Jan McCarthy, Head Teacher A warm welcome awaits you at our Regular or Special Services and events

As this is written we’re just coming to the end of our hot spell in October. It’s baffled us all and left us wondering what will come next! Often our futures are uncertain, whether it be health or employment worries and many of us stress about what may or may not happen. There’s a passage in the Bible that tells us not to worry but cast all our anxiety onto God because He cares for us (1 Peter 5:7). We pray you’ll try it one day and know God’s care. Christmas will soon be upon us with a mixed bag of events for all ages, so keep an eye on your doormat for the 2012 Calendar, Christmas Card and service information, including details about a visit in December by Sujo John, a 9/11 World Trade Centre survivor. He’s coming to share his story of survival and faith in Jesus Christ. For more details see the website at www.creechbc.co.uk. The search for a suitable site for Creech Allotments continues, with interest from many in and around Creech. It may be that we link with Ruishton too, so keep a look out for more information or contact us if you want to know more. We are a group of women who cycle every Thursday, starting at the fishermen's car park in Creech at 10.00. By 12.00ish we are back home but not before a coffee stop somewhere on the way. Whether you ride a 'sit up and beg' a 'snazzy sports model' or a' penny farthing' you will find cycling in winter is exhilarating. We cycled most weeks last winter and were only rained on ONCE. Start next year's fitness campaign early - by spring you will feel ready for anything - and your bike will appreciate not being alone in the dark all winter. Chairperson: Gerry Norris (01823 444099)

July Meeting: A visit to ‘Lift the Latch’, a beautiful ¾ acre garden with a large lake as its main feature. The owners have transformed the house and garden over the last 25 years. They had lots of pictures to show the amount of hard work which has gone into creating this garden ‘for all seasons’. The owners had prepared a DVD loop of the garden throughout the year, and in every season new colours emerged in the banks and borders. Even in the depths of winter the strong planting structure gave it interest. As the garden sloped away from the house, nestling in a small valley, it was well sheltered. This enabled the owners to indulge their passion for Acers, which were planted throughout the garden. Their fine leaves being complimented by the shrubs and flowers around them. It was evident that the owner’s large amount of planning, care and choice of plants were all reflected in this lovely garden. The club members found it hard to leave as the visit came to an end.

August Meeting: The last of our summer garden visits was to Monks Orchard, a beautiful ¾ acre garden. The main garden, at the rear of the 1930’s house, had an open aspect and extensive views across rolling countryside. The lawns around the house were kept immaculate by the ‘Under-gardener’, whilst the colourful borders were the wife’s domain. The deep borders were full of shrubs and perennials, all planted to give continuous colour through the summer. The mature trees were host to climbing roses and clematis were scrambling over arches. The small vegetable area was well stocked and flourishing. After a stroll around the garden members were able sit on the patio and enjoy refreshments, which was a very pleasant way to end this visit. The members would like to thank Claire for arranging the garden visits, each of which has been to a very special garden. For September the monthly talks start again and are held at the Primary School. The talks start promptly at 7:15pm. Everyone is welcome to come and listen to our variety of speakers.
