Council’s last Ordinary Meeting for 2012 will be held on December 14 which is also break up day. All being well, our meeting will finish at lunch time where we can join you all in celebrating the achievements of 2012. Scott Mason Page 3 Desert Yarns From the Tourism Desk It’s now Summer and the flow of visitors has slowed to a trickle. We launched the new Destination Brand for ‘the Diamantina’ in Longreach last month and in Birdsville at the November Council meeting. We have gone with ‘The Diamantina’ as the destination with the tagline being ‘where the Desert meets the Channel Country’. The new brand will be used to promote the shire externally and to provide consistency in our marketing approach so you’ll see it appearing in our 2013 advertising. Council has provided a submission to the Department of Tourism, Major Events, Small Business & the Commonwealth Games on their draft Drive Tourism Strategy. This is especially important giv- en that the majority of visitors to the Diamantina come by vehi- Richard Cooley, Jeff Smith and Steven Baldwin at the 2012 cle. Outback Qld Tourism Awards in Longreach November 17. Council staff break for Christmas on the 14th December but there will be reduced town services staff operating in both Bedourie and Birdsville over Christmas. At the November council meeting in Birdsville council inspected the playgroup facilities and agreed to renovations which will allow playgroup to continue operating when the Birdsville Hall is in use. At the same meeting council approved a trial which will provide access to the Birdsville State School Swimming Pool for one day a week over Summer. We are now seeking community members with either Bronze Medallion or first aid qualifications to fill the roster on Saturdays. Contact me for further information We now have a large number of new display cabinets that arrived in Birdsville this week. The majority will be used in Birdsville but several are earmarked for Bedourie. These new cabinets are lockable and backlit so we are asking for anyone who has any historic or significant items to contact the Wirrarri Visitor Centre staff as we’re seeking items for display The new artwork installed as part of the ‘Dust, Sand & Gibbers’ project has been extremely well received and Jo is currently preparing signs which explain a little bit about the art and the artists. Have a great Xmas and drive safely. See you in 2013. Steven Baldwin Tourism & Community Manager Lyn and Donna Rowlands Outback Qld Tourism Awards The Diamantina Shire Council’s Tourism Team recently joined some 300 industry leaders at the Outback Queensland Tourism Awards held in Longreach in 15-17 November. Sixteen categories were awarded, with the Birdsville Hotel sweeping the pool winning three categories including the Best Tourism Restaurant and Catering Service, Best Outback Queensland Pub and Young Achiever Award for Hotel Manger Kate McDonald. Congratulations Kate, Jo and the entire hotel staff on a job well done! Congratulations also to DSC staff- ers Jeff Smith, Alison Angus and Kim Wildman for entering submissions. The three day event included a symposium on tourism during which the Council’s new “Diamantina” branding was unveiled. The film follows the lives of the Ferguson family, retiring managers of Durham Downs Station, as their home passes on to the next family of employees of S. Kidman and Co., the Station’s pastoral lease-holder. As they end a thirty year association with the property and an at least five generations association with the area, the Fergusons are grieving for the loss of their home and trying to make sense of who they will be without Durham Downs. Running in parallel to the Ferguson’s story is that of the Ebsworth family and the Wangkumarra people. Moved from their traditional home in the 1930s, and having worked for the Station over generations, oil and gas exploration of the land is creating new opportunities for them to relate to their land.

Sustainable Grazing in the Channel Country Floodplains (Phase 2) Abstract ‘Sustainable Grazing in the Channel Country Floodplains’ was initiated by industry to redress the lack of objective information for sustainable management in the floodplains of Cooper Creek and the Diamantina and Georgina Rivers. The project has maintained links with the grazing community and has extensively drawn upon expert local experience and knowledge. The project has provided tools for managers to better anticipate the size of beneficial flooding arising from rains in the upper catchment and to more objectively assess the value of the pasture resulting from flooding. The latest information from the project has enabled customisation of the EDGENetwork™ Grazing Land Management training package for the Channel Country.

  • The Two Rainbow Serpents: Original Texts 2 Texts (Sections 2.1
The two rainbow serpents: original texts 2 Texts (Sections 2.1. to 2.4.) are presented here exactly as recorded in notebooks by Jeremy Beckett in 1957-8. This means that the original spelling used in the notebooks has been retained here: it is based on the then newly practiced system of Arthur Capell.1 In this spelling ‘j’ represents the sound of ‘y’ as in ‘yes’, and voiced consonants are used instead of the now preferred unvoiced consonants: that is ‘g’ is used instead of ‘k’, ‘d’ instead of ‘t’ and ‘b’ instead of ‘p’. 2.1. George Dutton’s version They started off from Ularada waterhole (that’s on the Paroo 6-7 miles south of Wanaaring). They were Paroondji first. Then they travelled across through Urisino station (before the station was there). The blacks must have noticed a lot of willows as marks to follow. They went on past Number Seven Bore and they went into a place they called Yattla. (There’s a tank there.) Here they talked Bandjigali. When they got there they was at the top end of the Creek at Yancannia station. Then they followed the creek down. They came to a place they call Big Wunu and Little Wunu, after the little creeks come in about seven miles from the station. Then they went down to a place they call Tartu wanyara [tartu is head]. Then they go down to Mingabulka (it means a dead hole as far as I can tell). Well they went on a bit further then to a place they call Garrabala (there was a lot of sandstone there and they camped there one night and the old fellow called it Garrabala).
