Costume History Tree Assignment – Extra Credit Due December 2nd Project Outline: You will create a visual family tree of several styles.

Objectives: • To improve knowledge of costume history and the links between trends • To improve research skills • To improve visual presentation skills

Supplies: • Research clippings from books, databases, the internet and journals • A notebook or some form of binding or board for the presentation of your findings • Paper for laying out the clippings • Any extra layout supplies

Project requirements: • You will choose 4 different from the list below. If you have another subculture in mind that you would like to work on, you may verify that it is okay with the instructor. No two people may work on the same subcultures. Find 5 photographic examples of styles from that subculture. • From that subculture, create a “family tree” looking into the influence of the style. For instance, Teddy Boys have a strong Edwardian influence and 20’s zoot / smoking jacket combination. The Edwardian style can be traced back to the 1830’s, and the zoot suit can be traced to the Incroyables of the Directoire period. What then can the Incroyables style and 1830’s prim look be traced back to? Keep going…each style may branch into 2, 3, 4 or more styles that you can see. • Find 2-3 photographic or pictorial examples for each “branch” that you can trace back for that style. • Remember, any style can ultimately be traced back to the origins of clothing! Just like your family tree, you don’t just spring out of existence in the 1700’s – you can be traced all the way back to the beginning of humans. So can fashion styles! • Figure out some way to lay out your tree and bind it together to turn in. I leave the artistic license up to you. It can be several pages in a notebook, a fold-out style, whatever… if you really want to carry around several boards, you may turn it in on boards (something sturdier than plain poster board, though please.)
