4 THE LANDSCAPES OF THE LOT

A Lot of landscape The Lot lies at the northern extremity of the Midi-Pyrénées region, which stretches from the confines of the Dordogne Valley to the highest peaks of the Pyrenees, forming the heart of South-West . The region comprises eight départements created during the reorganisation of government after the Revolution, each one with a chief city or Préfecture; which for us is .

Two great rivers, the Dordogne in the north and the Lot in the south, cross the département, winding their way east - west to join with the Garonne. In the north-east, the Ségala is the highest, coolest and most well-watered area, with granite hills sloping steeply down into valleys carved out by fast-flowing streams. Its name comes from the Occitan word for

The PNR: Causses du Quercy Regional Natural Park

This Park, which covers a large part of the central limestone plateau, was created in order to preserve the distinctive landscape, wildlife habitats, agriculture, local heritage and traditions of the Causses, without preventing economic development and progress. An important part of the Park's work is to maintain the balance between the various demands on the countryside, so that inhabitants and visitors alike may enjoy it for a long time to come.

6 HERITAGE The “Grands Sites” of Midi-Pyrénées Recently, the Midi-Pyrénées Region has designated certain places as "Grands Sites". These are what you might call the brightest stars amongst the many that shine in the region's galaxy. The Lot has five of these: two "Villes d'Art et d'Histoire", an ancient place of pilgrimage, a beautifully- preserved mediaeval village, and the section of the Dordogne Valley lying within the département boundaries (see p 12). Here, the magic of Nature and the cunning art of Man go hand-in-hand, blending in total harmony so that it is sometimes hard to tell one from the other.

Padirac Chasm

The limestone underlying almost two-thirds of the Lot is everywhere pierced with caves, chasms, caverns, galleries and potholes…although arid on top, with little surface water, it's a different story underground, as a visit to Chasm will show. This spectacular 75 m deep hole in the ground gives access to a subterranean river, along which you travel in a small boat to reach other caverns of truly impressive dimensions, as are the stalactites and stalagmites found in them. The whole system is natural: it was not properly explored until the 19th C., and recently, cave divers have managed to chart about 40 km of galleries For nearly a thousand years, the narrow, lonely within the network. canyon of the Alzou has been home to a cluster of buildings clinging to the rock half way up the sheer cliffs; and from this improbable spot, a powerful call has gone out, drawing millions of the faithful to the shrine of the Black Virgin of Rocamadour. From very early times, a chapel dedicated to Our Lady existed here, looked after by a few Benedictine monks, but it was only after the discovery of the perfectly-preserved body of Saint Amadour in 1166 that a pilgrimage began to develop. This flourished until the 15th C. and brought great wealth, which saw the development of the monastic buildings (now gone), the shrines, seven in all, the village itself, amenities such as a pilgrim hospital, water cisterns, etc., plus the essential defences: castle, ramparts and fortified gates, of which several are intact or still easily visible. This fascinating museum, dedicated to the world's major writing systems, occupies the house in which was born Jean-François Champollion, who cracked the lost code of Egyptian hieroglyphics in the early 19th C. The Ganil Towpath

Before the Cahors-Figeac railway line opened in 1886, the majority of goods were transported by "gabarres", flat-bottomed cargo boats. They hade no trouble going downstream, but it was impossible to sail or row them upstream, so they had to be towed: at first by teams of men, later by teams of oxen. This necessitated a towpath, and in the 19th C., a new, more convenient one was created by carving it out of the base of the cliffs between St. Cirq and Bouziès.

10 HERITAGE The Most Beautiful Villages in France This is a group of just over 150 villages dotted all over France, each of which has had to satisfy strict criteria (population no more than 2000, quality of buildings, setting, heritage, etc.) in order to join the "Most Beautiful Villages" association. The Lot has six of these: St-Cirq-Lapopie (see p. 9) in the Lot Valley, Carennac, and in the Dordogne Valley, Cardaillac and le Haut. Loubressac oubressac is close to Carennac, but quite different. Perched where the limestone plateau falls away L to the valleys of the Dordogne and two of its tributaries, the Cère and the Bave, it has a magnificent viewpoint (with stone bench) overlooking the countryside shaped by the various watercourses that meet here. The 12th C tympanum, erected in front of the older 11th C. doorway is beautifully carved, and the cloister next to the church has also been conserved. It is well worth a visit. The Renaissance building at the enclosure entrance is now an exhibition space, and you can visit the imposing rooms which were the Dean's quarters. The most famous Dean was François de Salignac de Lamothe Fénelon, whose name occurs all over Carennac. Born of a noble family in nearby Périgord, in the late 17th C. he became a respected figure at the court of Louis XIV, the Sun King, and was chosen as private tutor to the King's grandson. His name has become attached to a local aperitif…why not raise a glass in his honour?

HERITAGE 11 Autoire Capdenac le Haut

Rising majestically above the Lot, Capdenac-le-Haut has, for time out of mind, kept watch over the river and the approaches to the ancient province of Quercy from the south and east. Neolithic peoples colonised this area; the promontory became a Celtic hill-fort, the Romans invested it, and in mediaeval times it was an important defensive post, taking on the form we know today. The massive keep dating from the 13th C. and fortified gates that opened in the encircling ramparts are still to be seen, as are picturesque lanes and houses. Beseiged many times, it was nevertheless prosperous until the coming of the railway in the 19th C., which concentrated economic activity in the lower town around the station on the plain on the other side of the river.

A few miles further east lies Autoire, tucked into a deep gorge cut into the limestone by a little stream called the Autoire, which forms a waterfall at the head of the gorge. Autoire was quite prosperous in the past, and members of the rich bourgeoisie chose to build their country homes here, hence the number of fine large houses dating back to the 15th and 16th C. dotted all around the village. The lovely old church is Romanesque in origin, with later alterations, and has been beautifully restored in recent times. In the cliffs opposite, stands a "Château des Anglais"; a fortified cave, its entrance protected by two masonry towers, once used as a robbers' hideout. Cardaillac

North of Figeac, this was the seat of a baron from the 11th C. onwards. Founded by the Cardaillac family, one of the most powerful in Quercy (the old name for this area), the fortress dominated the surrounding countryside and protected the village that developed beside it. The Cardaillacs produced many military figures and influential ecclesiastics over the centuries, some members of the family combining both careers. The village now has two distinct parts; the "fort", and the old residential village itself. Within the "fort", three of the castle's defensive towers still stand: a round 15th C. tower and two 11th-12th C. square ones, interspersed with more recent houses. The other quarter has numerous attractive old village houses, plus a stone well and some vestiges of the ramparts that once sheltered the inhabitants. It has also conserved various elements typical of a past way of life: a clog maker's workshop, a plum-drying oven, a chestnut-dryer, etc.

12 RIVER VALLEYS The Dordogne River

This gives its name to our neighbouring département, La Dordogne, but before entering it, flows across the north of the Lot, separating a small section of the limestone causse, known as the Causse de Martel, from the rest. The Dordogne rises in central France, in the high hills of the Auvergne, on the Puy de Sancy. It flows westwards until it joins the Garonne, the mightiest river in the South-West of France, and together they form the Gironde estuary, on which stands the city of Bordeaux.

There are dams on the higher reaches, but it is a "natural" river in that there are no locks or canalised stretches along its course. In the past, it was the great "highway" along which goods of all kinds were transported: before the coming of the railways in the 19th C., at a time when roads were frequently impassable, rivers were an essential lifeline for trade. Chestnuts, cheeses, wood for the making of barrels to contain Bordeaux wine… all these and more came down the river on "gabarres", traditional flat-bottomed wooden boats. The Dordogne winds its way across the Lot, creating impressive limestone cliffs, as at the Cirque de , and a rich alluvial flood plain which is divided into fertile fields, pastures and orchards (there are many walnut groves to be seen in this area). Belcastel It receives various tributaries, including the underground river which runs through Padirac Chasm.

One of the largest mediaeval fortresses in the South of France stands guard over the river: the castle of Castelnau-Bretenoux. There has been a fortress on this site for a thousand years, but the oldest parts of the present structure go back to the 12th C. Other, smaller castles also occupy strategic points overlooking the Dordogne, such as Belcastel, at its confluence with the Ouysse, and the attractive La Treyne, now a four-star hotel. The delightful mediaeval town of Souillac, with its 12th C. abbey, stands on the river. Its prosperity in earlier times came directly from the river trade: worth a visit to see what was built on this. Gluges - Martel

RIVER VALLEYS 13

The River Lot he Lot, like the Dordogne, is one of the Garonne's enabled the trade that was its lifeblood. The mediaeval village is well worth a visit, and the views are spectacular. Further downriver, the Lot flows past the attractive little town of where every year in October, a saffron festival is held. Decreed to be a place of safety for Protestants after the Wars of Religion, it is now a place where anyone can enjoy a quiet life (except during the three-day Africajarc festival in summer!).

After this, the river creates high limestone cliffs on its way through the limestone causse. Here, the spectacular village of St. Cirq Lapopie occupies its rocky outcrop, and downstream, the valley is narrow and enclosed as it glides past the fortified cave opposite the village of Bouziès Haut. Continuing down to Cahors, the valley begins to widen out, and the cliffs give way to steep-sided hills which sometimes drop suddenly into the water forming vertical faces called "cévennes". The fascinating, historic city of Cahors owes a great deal of the prosperity it enjoyed in the past to its situation on the river, which

14 RIVER VALLEYS The Célé This little river rises in the neighbouring département, Cantal, and is one of the Lot's principal tributaries. Its name comes from the Latin "celer", meaning swift, and refers to its nature in its upper reaches, where it is a fast-flowing stream. Soon after entering the Lot, it flows past the beautiful mediaeval city of Figeac, where a Benedictine abbey was founded in the 9th C. This cave, located in the hills above the lower reaches of the Célé, is one of the most important prehistoric sites in the area, containing paintings some of which are 24, 600 years old. When you visit the cave, you see the real paintings – not a copy. For obvious reasons, the number of entries per day is limited, so do book in advance in high season. The cave system is quite large, and there are some very interesting natural concretions to be seen, as well as the art, plus some fossilised human footprints. There is a museum associated with the cave, with displays of prehistoric artefacts found locally plus a film about the paintings, and your ticket admits you to both.

If you go to a good cheesemonger's, you will also find a large number of other cheeses – cow's, goat's and sheep's milk – made in the Lot. Try some – they're really good.

Duck and goose No-one who eats or shops in this area can be unaware of the vast number of products prepared from the flocks of ducks and geese raised here. Some of these traditional products arise from the need to preserve food for the winter in times before refrigeration; notably confit.
