Dear Customers, Colleagues, and Friends, This edition of the GO has been delayed and the format and content altered in order for us to best accommodate the quickly changing world that COVID-19 has created for us. At this time, we are unsure of when we will fully reopen the facility as well as when programs will return to fully operational. What we do know is this: 1. A number of resources have become very important to our older community members. Please see page 2 for some of them. 2. There will be no lunch served on site at the Senior Center until at the earliest, September 8. Home delivery is a wonderful option and you can call 303 772 0540 for more information. 3. Any activities that require the “sharing” of an item, such as cards, billiards, or mah jongg, or touching as in dancing, will not be returning until later in the year or when guidance recommends or restrictions safely allow. 4. Any activities that can accommodate both the physical distance and mask- wearing will be reintroduced as soon as it is safe to do so, though it may require fewer participants in a larger room. 5. Masks will likely be required for anyone in the building and the 6 ft. distancing will be enforced. 6. A handwashing station will be located in the lobby and we are asking visitors to wash their hands regularly for their safety and the safety of others. 7. We will design activity rooms to accommodate the 6’ physical distance for as long as that is recommended or required. 8. Book lending through the library in the lobby of the Senior Center is suspended until further notice. 9. Some July and August programs listed in this catalog may be cancelled, or offered virtually, decisions are pending. 10. Registration for activities is underway for virtual programs (see page 4). Stay in touch for additional registration information. Please let us know how we can best keep you informed about registration by A. Calling the front desk and leaving your name and number and asking us to update you about registration, or B. Emailing [email protected] and asking to be added to the biweekly email updates, or C. Checking our webpage at www.longmontcolorado.gov/senior-services regularly for updates. We have missed you and we need you as we all work to make the Senior Center better and safer for all in the months and years ahead. We look forward to seeing you again and working with you to make your Senior Center the best it can be.

Michele Waite, Manager, Senior Services 1 Longmont Meals on Wheels LMOW has been uniquely situated to help Longmont’s older population in the age of COVID-19, as we already help older adults who can’t leave their homes regularly and struggle to prepare meals for themselves. During the coronavirus emergency the agency has also welcomed many of its regular Senior Center Park View Cafe patrons to home delivery. In the first month alone of the emergency, Longmont Meals on Wheels took on 71 new home clients, and the numbers have been continuing to increase at an extraordinary pace since. During the peak of the emergency, Longmont Meals on Wheels partnered with local restaurants. This was a win-win-win for Longmont, local businesses and some of the most high risk in our community. When the city identified Longmont Meals on Wheels as an essential service, the agency worked with the city to come up with a plan to ensure the agency would not have to close due to any coronavirus disruptions. This involved restaurants, giving the agency three things: better social distancing among staff, a chance to stockpile some frozen meals, and a chance to teach other professional kitchens the ins and outs of INFORMATION the agency’s operations in case restaurants had to step in due to a quarantine among the agency’s staff. These wonderful restaurant partners went as low as they could on the price of their meals while still making sure they weren’t hurting their business. Longmont Meals on Wheels averaged more than 2,500 meals delivered every week during the age of “stay at home”, a mix of in-house- prepared and restaurant-prepared meals! Other things changed besides who was making all those meals! To further help with social distancing among staff, volunteers and clients, Longmont Meals on Wheels went down to one delivery per week, sending out a week’s worth of meals in one day. Most of the meals were frozen for folks to heat up throughout the week as they needed. On the days that there was no delivery, Longmont Meals on Wheels staff called clients for a tele-wellness check. This moment of connection every day was so important at a time of such extreme isolation. It may be some time before everything returns to normal at Longmont Meals on Wheels, so please call 303-772-0540 or visit them at longmontmeals.org for the latest news or to sign up for home delivery.

The Friends of the Longmont Senior Center, Inc. is a 501©3 non-profit organization registered with the State of Colorado. The Board meets the fourth Tuesday from 3:00 – 4:30 pm at the Senior Center. If you would like more information, please contact Michele at 303-651-8415. OF THE LONGMONT OF CENTER SENIOR Dear Friends,

Welcome to the new board members of Friends of the Longmont Senior Center; Chuck Allen, Roger Jurgens, Barb Kusinitz, Julie Burrows Loza, and Rick Stewart. We are grateful for what they bring to the Senior Center; their skills, wisdom, and commitment to improving the lives of seniors in our community. Together they bring financial expertise, community awareness, a willingness to be involved in enhancing the lives of older adults, and the wisdom of aging. FRIENDS I also want to acknowledge and welcome new volunteer peer counselors; Beth Bowles, Gary Scott, Sharon McCaffrey, and Rose Ayers. They recently completed an intensive training to provide supportive counseling to our community of older adults facing loss, challenging changes in their lives, depression, anxiety, and caregiving responsibilities.

It is difficult to understand the full experience that a caregiver faces. Even with my many years of facilitating caregiver support groups there was more for me to learn. When my older brother was struck with Alzheimers Disease, I traveled long distance multiple times a year to help my sister-in-law. It was during those trips and that time spent with them that I realized how incredibly overwhelming the responsibilities and challenges may be for caregivers and how supportive services can really make a difference.

Older and younger adults may be caring for a spouse, parent, sibling or dear friend. Senior Services offers many programs to educate and support our caregivers. There are 2 monthly caregiver support groups here and others throughout the county. Classes at the Senor Center change every quarter and may include dealing with the stages of Alzheimers Disease, being a savvy caregiver, or building a care team. Check out the Health and Wellness and Resource Sections of the GO for details on these opportunities. Call Brandy Queen (303-651-8414) about counseling services.

Finally, I want to welcome Griffen Gastel, our new custodian. Without his skills our center cannot maintain its high standard of care & cleanliness.

Thank you to Becky Williamson for her enthusiasm, leadership, ability to establish and maintain a welcoming and inclusive environment, commitment to Longmont, and her willingness to share an incredible amount of time and skill. When asked to teach a 6 week knitting class over 20 years ago, Becky said “yes”. And she continued that commitment for all of these years leading a weekly knitting group with over 45 regular members. The group has given away thousands and thousands of baby hats, blankets, sweaters, mittens and more. Becky was the founder and keeper of this group for so long and she will be dearly missed by knitters, staff, and many others in Colorado and beyond.

Hi Jackie and Mark — Thanks for joining us today to chat a bit about volunteering for Meals on Wheels. How long have you volunteered here? Mark: it will be five years in November! That’s great — What got you started here? What brought you in the door? Mark: Growing up, my parents volunteered for Meals on Wheels in North Carolina and when I NEWS retired I thought “How can we give back to the community.” We saw an ad in the paper and we came down here and signed up—been doing it ever since! Jackie, were your folks also big on volunteering growing up? What prompted you to volunteer, too? Jackie: No, I didn’t grow up with it like Mark did, but I needed something to do in retirement. Why Meals on Wheels? There are a lot of volunteer opportunities out there? Mark: Well, we both volunteer in other places, too. Jackie volunteers in the interfaith quilting and I volunteer at the Longmont Museum and a middle school, too. And of course, my parents used to deliver Meals on Wheels in North Carolina, so I was familiar. My mom and dad said the people would sit on the front porch waiting for them to come and would talk to them about what’s going on. My parents got to know them and their kids and it affected them.

COMMUNITY COMMUNITY Jackie: We both retired and moved out here about seven years ago and we needed something to do. I saw an ad in the paper and signed us up! I see you work in the kitchen — do you also drive and deliver meals? Mark: Well, we thought about it and talked about it, but… Jackie: …the need was here in the kitchen, so we wanted to fill the need. Is it a core group of regular volunteers? What’s your shift like? Mark: The Friday group has been pretty consistent. The kitchen shifts are longer than the driving shifts, but we have a lot of fun with it and it keeps us busy. It’s not hard work, and again, the people that get these meals rely on it. It’s very important. Do you have any favorite meals here? Mark: Everything that Mike cooks is delicious! [raucous laughter] Jackie: It’s most crowded here in the Park View Cafe when it’s pot roast. Pot roast, meatloaf, and salmon always pack the house. What would you say to anyone coming in who wanted to volunteer for Meals on Wheels? Jackie: It’s a social event for volunteers and patrons. They come here and they sit at certain tables and it’s a social event for a lot of folks, which is fun and rewarding. Mark: It’s definitely a rewarding volunteer opportunity. It’s not hard, four or five hours a day to work in the kitchen and you see a lot of nice people. There’s folks that come in here every day that we’ve gotten to know. It’s really enjoyable and it’s definitely worthwhile. It gives back to the community.
