1 Hannah Gramson Larry Lipin HIST 491 March 6, 2013 The Science of the Seance: The Scientific Theory of the Spiritualist Movement in Victorian America In 1869, twenty one years after the first “spirit rappings” were heard in the bedroom of two young girls in upstate New York, a well-known Spiritualist medium by the name of Emma Hardinge Britten wrote a book that chronicled the first two decades of a religion she characterized as uniquely American, and what made this religion exceptional was its basis in scientific theory. “[We] are not aware of any other country than America,” Britten claimed, “where a popular religion thus appeals to the reason and requires its votaries to do their own thinking, or of any other denomination than 'American Spiritualists' who base their belief on scientific facts, proven by living witnesses.”1 Britten went on to claim that, as a “unique, concrete, and...isolated movement,” Spiritualism demanded “from historic justice a record as full, complete, and independent, as itself.”2 Yet, despite the best efforts of Spiritualism's followers to carve out a place for it alongside the greatest scientific discoveries in human history, Spiritualism remains a little understood and often mocked religion that, to those who are ignorant 1 Emma Hardinge Britten, Modern American Spiritualism: A Twenty Years' Record of the Communion Between Earth and the World of Spirits,(New York, 1869) 2 Britten, Modern American Spiritualism 2 of it, remains a seemingly paradoxical movement. BIRCH ^'*IiE term Spiritualism, as used by philosophical writers denotes the opposite of materialism., but it is also used in a narrower sense to describe the belief that the spiritual world manifests itself by producing in the physical world, effects inexplicable by the known laws of natural science. Many individuals are of the opinion that it is a new doctrine: but in reality the belief in occasional manifesta- tions of a supernatural world has probably existed in the human mind from the most primitive times to the very moment. It has filtered down through the ages under various names. As Haynes states in his book. Spirifttallsiii I'S. Christianity, 'Tt has existed for ages in the midst of heathen darkness, and its presence in savage lands has been marked by no march of progress, bv no advance in civilization, by no development of education, by no illumination of the mental faculties, by no increase of intelligence, but its acceptance has been productive of and coexistent with the most profound ignor- ance, the most barbarous superstitions, the most unspeakable immor- talities, the basest idolatries and the worst atrocities which the world has ever known."' Solitude, Spiritual Beings and Social Responsibility
SOLITUDE, SPIRITUAL BEINGS AND SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY V. Prabhu Abstract: Ancient Indian tradition extols solitariness. It considers solitariness as a necessary precondition for a spiritual well-being and enlightenment. Every aspirant should pass through the two stages of solitary life vanaprastha and saṃnyāsa in one’s spiritual journey. Spiritual aspirants of the distant and recent past have imbibed the virtues of solitary life. The society even today regards them with the greatest respect and veneration. But what is the role of spiritual solitary beings to society? Do they have any responsibility to the society? Or being in solitude is an end-in-itself for them? It is a matter of discussion as whether the solitary being after liberation, should come back to society to help liberate the masses as well. This issue was discussed in early philosophical literature and by some recent spiritualists as well. I will try to explore this issue with inputs from traditional discussions and works of spiritualists like Ramakrishna Paramahamsa, Swami Vivekananda, Ramana Maharishi and others. I will try to address this issue by taking note of current happenings in Indian society. Introduction Ancient Indian tradition extols solitariness. Light has never received any extended coverage or historical treatment yet it was one of the major spiritualist newspapers during this part of British history. This thesis diagrams the lives of Light ’s first four major editors from 1881 till the end of World War I and their views on the growth of science, God, Christ, evolution, and morality. By focusing on one major spiritualist newspaper from 1881 till 1920, this thesis attempts to bridge the gap in spiritualist historiography that marks World War I as a stopping or starting point. -

It's the only thing I have ever studied with any interest… -Tracey Emin, 1997 She is the messenger and her medium is herself: the biographical details of her working class background, her experiences as a sick child, her fear of ghosts, her musings over love, and her triumph as one of the most recognized artists in England. Tracey Emin's celebrity now reaches outside the inbred world of the Young British Artist phenomenon. Since her achievement of being short-listed for the 1999 Turner Prize, Emin has found an audience that transcends art world boundaries. Even as she utilizes the highly personal and private voice of a contemporary female artist in much of her work, Emin elsewhere appropriates the decidedly feminine performance strategies of the Victorian clairvoyant, who was permitted to transgress the gender boundaries of English society by ‘being a lady.’ Manifested in all its rules of propriety, being a lady was a persona characterized by personal passivity and formalized rituals of interpersonal decorum. Acting as such, Emin is able to ‘channel’ the power of a female voice to create a unified oeuvre – using her interest in late 19th and early 20th century manifestations of the paranormal to define a universal, and gender-less, soul. Emin’s performance of esoteric rituals, and their incorporation into a complex media matrix, reflects the philosophical theories and thoughts historically associated with mysticism. -

SILVA DE ALMEIDA University of Campinas FRANCISCO LOTUFO NETO University of São Paulo Edited by Dr TOM DENING Spiritism is widely accepted in Brazil and influences psychiatric practice, especially through religious-oriented hospitals. However, during the first half of the twentieth century it was considered an important cause of mental illness. This paper first reviews opinions on ‘Spiritist madness’, written by the most eminent psychiatrists of the time, and then discusses the epistemological factors that have contributed to the conflict between medicine and Spiritism. We critically examine the appropriateness of the methods used in the debates, and how this has led to inferences about associations and causal relationships. Although such experiences are ancient and exist in every culture, well-controlled studies of the subject are scarce.
