  • Mindscapes of Space, Power and Value in Mumbai
Island Studies Journal, Vol. 9, No. 2, 2014, pp. 277-292 The epistemology of a sea view: mindscapes of space, power and value in Mumbai Ramanathan Swaminathan Senior Fellow, Observer Research Foundation (ORF) Fellow, National Internet Exchange of India (NIXI) Contributing Editor, Governance Now [email protected] ABSTRACT: Mumbai is a collection of seven islands strung together by a historically layered process of reclamation, migration and resettlement. The built landscape reflects the unique geographical characteristics of Mumbai’s archipelagic nature. This paper first explores the material, non-material and epistemological contours of space in Mumbai. It establishes that the physical contouring of space through institutional, administrative and non-institutional mechanisms are architected by complex notions of distance from the city’s coasts. Second, the paper unravels the unique discursive strands of space, spatiality and territoriality of Mumbai. It builds the case that the city’s collective imaginary of value is foundationally linked to the archipelagic nature of the city. Third, the paper deconstructs the complex power dynamics how a sea view turns into a gaze: one that is at once a point of view as it is a factor that provides physical and mental form to space. In conclusion, the paper makes the case that the mindscapes of space, value and power in Mumbai have archipelagic material foundations. Keywords : archipelago, form, island, mindscape, Mumbai, power, space, value © 2014 – Institute of Island Studies, University of Prince Edward Island, Canada. Introduction: unearthing the archipelagic historiography of Mumbai A city can best be described as a collection of spaces. Not in any ontological sense or in a physically linear form, but in an ever-changing, ever-interacting mesh of spatialities and territorialities that display the relative social relations of power existing at that particular point in time (Holstein & Appadurai, 1989).

Transylv. Rev. Syst. Ecol. Res. 19.1 (2017), "The Wetlands Diversity" 61 PRESENT STATUS OF INTERTIDAL BIODIVERSITY IN AND AROUND MUMBAI (WEST COAST OF INDIA) Kulkarni BALASAHEB *, Babar ATUL *, Jaiswar ASHOK ** and Kolekar RAHUL * * Department of Marine Biology, The Institute of Science, Madam Cama Road 15, Mumbai, IN-400032, [email protected], [email protected], [email protected] ** Central Institute of Fisheries Education, Versova, Mumbai, IN-400061, [email protected] DOI: 10.1515/trser-2017-0006 KEYWORDS: intertidal, mollusc, benthos, algae, echinoderm, crustacean, fish. ABSTRACT During the present investigation, Girgaon, Marine Drive, Haji Ali and Gorai Creek in Mumbai were selected for biodiversity assessment following a protocol for natural geography in shore areas. Fifty nine macrobenthic molluscs, arthropods, coelenterates and echinoderms at these sites were recorded. The maximum density of gastropods and clams was observed at Marine Drive shore. At Gorai Creek, there were plentiful Telescopium telescopium, Potamidus cingulatis, mudskipper and fiddler crabs. Studies shows that the biodiversity status of the selected sites varies with respect to location, type of substratum and season. Pollution was observed to have a noticeable effect on clams at Girgaon coast, where many Paphia textile shells were observed to be filled with mud and coated with black colour.

  • Social Cohesion in Gilbert Hill What Can Be Done to Better Integrate the Informality Within the Formal Planning Process
EXAMENSARBETE INOM SAMHÄLLSBYGGNAD, AVANCERAD NIVÅ, 30 HP STOCKHOLM, SVERIGE 2018 Social Cohesion in Gilbert Hill What can be done to better Integrate the Informality within the Formal Planning Process GUSTAV CARLSBRAND EMMA JOHANSSON KTH SKOLAN FÖR ARKITEKTUR OCH SAMHÄLLSBYGGNAD Abstract The government in Maharashtra are trying to rehabilitate the informal settlements in Mumbai through the slum rehabilitation authority and its rehabilitation scheme and we wanted to learn more about how it worked and how it affects living conditions for former residents of an informal settlement and how it can differ from those still living there. This study has a focus on a specific informal settlement in Mumbai, called Gilbert Hill. Through observations and interviews with people living in the area, the research investigates resident’s opinions and experiences. Interviews with officials, involved in the planning of Mumbai were conducted, in order to learn how the interaction between formal and informal structures looks like. The results will be presented in this report and will give an insight of the life in an informal settlement in Mumbai as well as the thoughts and efforts with the rehabilitation of said settings. Our findings have been analysed and discussed in the light of David Harvey’s The right to city, displacement theories, theories about the public private partnership and what it is that makes informal settlements to persist. We have discovered that it is not as easy as to just redevelop an informal settlement according to a uniform plan. Residents have special bonds to the neighbourhood, both between each other and to the place itself.

Gilbert Hill in Mumbai is a place which has all the necessary ingredients which can make a successful tourist spot. The hill is formed of 65 million years old columnar basalt rocks, which makes it a rare geological wonder and a potential tourist spot. The hill is located within the heart of city, and has excellent connectivity. There is also an old shrine of Gaondevi on top of the hill. In spite of its geological and cultural importance, Gilbert hill has not been able to develop as a tourist spot. Several, geographical, social and economic factors are responsible for this failure of tourist potential. The present paper attempts to study these factors and to assess the feasibility of Gilbert Hill’s development as a tourist attraction, thereby emphasizing the role of effective tourism management.
