  • History of the Commonwealth Games
GAMES HISTORY INTRODUCTION In past centuries, the British Empire’s power and influence stretched all over the world. It started at the time of Elizabeth 1 when Sir Francis Drake and other explorers started to challenge the Portuguese and Spanish domination of the world. The modern Commonwealth was formed in 1949, with ‘British’ dropped from the name and with Logo of the Commonwealth many countries becoming independent, but Games Federation choosing to remain part of the group of nations called the Commonwealth. The first recorded Games between British Empire athletes were part of the celebrations for the Coronation of His Majesty King George V in 1911. The Games were called the 'Festival of Empire' and included Athletics, Boxing, Wrestling and Swimming events. At the 1928 Olympic Games in Amsterdam, the friendliness between the Empire athletes revived the idea of the Festival of Empire. Canadian, Bobby Robinson, called a meeting of British Empire sports representatives, who agreed to his proposal to hold the first Games in 1930 in Hamilton, Canada. From 1930 to 1950 the Games were called the British Empire Games, and until 1962 were called the British Empire and Commonwealth Games. From 1966 to 1974 they became the British Commonwealth Games and from 1978 onwards they have been known as the Commonwealth Games. • Davies Clashes with Limond in Glasgow
DAVIES CLASHES WITH LIMOND IN GLASGOW Ohara Davies will face Willie Limond on the undercard of Ricky Burns’ WBA World Super-Lightweight title defence against Kiryl Relikh at the SSE Hydro in Glasgow on Friday October 7, live on Sky Sports. Unbeaten Hackney talent Davies landed the English belt in April with a KO win over Andy Keates at The O2 in London and the 24 year old known as ‘Two Tanks’ made it 10 KOs from a dozen pro outings in June. Davies faces a real step-up in class on his first trip north of the border as he meets the decorated champion Limond, with the popular Glasgow man entering the ring in his 45th pro outing and 15th title action. The 37 year old put in a spirited challenge for the British Super-Lightweight title against Tyrone Nurse at the SSE Arena in May and will provide Davies with his sternest test yet having shared the ring with World champions Amir Khan, Anthony Crolla and Alex Arthur. “This is a huge step up for Ohara and a real 50-50 fight,” said promoter Eddie Hearn. “Willie is looking to bounce back and Ohara hasn’t operated anywhere near this level. The card is shaping up nicely for a huge night in Glasgow on October 7.” Davies’ clash with Limond is part of a huge night of action in Glasgow as three-weight World champion Ricky Burns defends his WBA World Super-Lightweight title against unbeaten mandatory challenger Kiryl Relikh. Scotty Cardle defending his British Lightweight title against Kevin Hooper, Commonwealth Games gold medal favourite Charlie Flynn tackling Manchester’s Kofi Yates, outings for Flynn’s Commonwealth Games teammate Joe Ham and Brixton’s Heavyweight star Dillian Whyte, plus more to be added.

  • Josh Taylor Moves to Top Rank and Closer to 140-Pound Classic Against Jose Ramirez
Opening The Door: Josh Taylor moves to Top Rank and closer to 140-pound classic against Jose Ramirez By Norm Frauenheim- Top Rank’s roster got deeper and its reach grew farther with Thursday’s surprising announcement that it had signed Josh Taylor, the Scottish junior-welterweight whose imminent stardom was evident in his majority decision over Regis Prograis for two of the 140-pound belts in late October. It was the second signing of worldwide significance for Top Rank, which signed bantamweight champion Naoya Inoue on the same day in November when he beat Nonito Donaire in a Fight of the Year performance. From Japan to Scotland, the sun never sets on Top Rank’s promotional empire these days. The top of the pound-for-pound debate provides a pretty good look at a promotional roster that is long on substance and name recognition. Among the top five, the order changes, but three are Top Rank fighters – Terence Crawford, Vasiliy Lomachenko and Inoue. Canelo Alvarez of Golden Boy and Errol Spence Jr. of PBC complete the elite five. There’s a chance, a good one, that more Top Rank fighters will begin to climb into pound-for-pound consideration on Top Rank’s ESPN schedule throughout 2020. There’s light- heavyweight Artur Beterbiev, junior-welterweight Jose Ramirez, lightweight Teofimo Lopez, featherweight Shakur Stevenson, junior-featherweight Emanuel Navarrete and now Taylor. For Taylor, it all depends on how he does against Ramirez. Taylor’s new deal opened the door for a Taylor-Ramirez fight for all of the relevant pieces to the 140-pound puzzle.
