    The Middle Jurassic of western and northern Europe: its subdivisions, geochronology and correlations John H. Callomon The palaeogeographic settings of Denmark and East Greenland during the Middle Jurassic are outlined. They lay in the widespread epicontinental seas that covered much of Europe in the post-Triassic transgression. It was a period of continuing eustatic sea-level rise, with only distant connections to world oceans: to the Pacific, via the narrow Viking Straits between Greenland and Norway and hence the arctic Boreal Sea to the north; and to the subtropical Tethys, via some 1200 km of shelf-seas to the south. The sedimentary history of the region was strongly influenced by two factors: tectonism and climate. Two modes of tectonic movement governed basinal evolution: crustal extension lead- ing to subsidence through rifting, such as in the Viking and Central Grabens of the North Sea; and subcrustal thermal upwelling, leading to domal uplift and the partition of marine basins through emergent physical barriers, as exemplified by the Central North Sea Dome with its associated volcanics. The climatic gradient across the 30º of temperate latitude spanned by the European seas governed biotic diversity and biogeography, finding expression in rock-forming biogenic carbonates that dominate sediments in the south and give way to largely siliciclastic sediments in the north. Geochronology of unrivalled finesse is provided by standard chronostratigraphy based on the biostratigraphy of ammonites. The Middle Jurassic saw the onset of considerable bioprovincial endemisms in these guide-fossils, making it necessary to construct parallel standard zonations for Boreal, Subboreal or NW European and Submediterranean Provinces, of which the NW European zonation provides the primary international standard.

In the NW areas, from Veruela-Ricla to Tosos (SW-S of Zaragoza), Callovian deposits are represented by expanded carbonate sequences (mudstone and marls with a variable content in clastics) ranging from early Bullatus to Athleta Biozone. Farther East in the near area of Moneva-Ariño (Sierra de Arcos) and in the area of Calanda (SE of Zaragoza), this stratigraphic interval is represented by a strongly condensed, 2-4 m thick, highly incomplete sequence. Bullatus to early Anceps biozones are partly represented under bioclastic or oolitic packstone facies. The Callovian-Oxfordian transition interval deposits are represented by a decimeter-thick iron- ooid fossiliferous limestone condensed sequence (low values of sedimentation rate) formed by expanded sediments (high values of instant rate of sediment accumulation).

The rock-core material shows the benthic bivalve fauna to reflect dysoxic, but not anoxic environments for the Oxfordian–Lower Kimmeridgian interval with sporadic monospecific assemblages of epifaunal bivalves, and more favourable conditions in the Volgian, with major increases in abundance and diversity of Hartwellia sp. assemblages. Overall, the new information from cores shows that abundance, diversity and stratigraphic continuity of the fossil record in the Upper Jurassic of Spitsbergen are considerably higher than indicated in outcrop studies. The inferred life positions and feeding habits of the benthic fauna refine our understanding of the depositional environments of the Agardhfjellet Formation. The pattern of occurrence of the bivalve genera is correlated with published studies of Arctic localities in East Greenland and northern Siberia and shows similarities in palaeoecology with the former but not the latter.

[email protected] ABSTRACT – IGM 9026 is a singular fossil collected at the beginning of the 20th century in an improperly documented site within the Tlaxiaco Basin, near to Tlaxiaco town, Oaxaca, Mexico. The age of the site was suggested as being early Cretaceous. This specimen is the holotype of Plesiosaurus (Polypticodon) mexicanus, which later was identified as a possible late Jurassic marine crocodylomorph of the family Metriorhynchidae, and consequently it was referred as ?Cricosaurus mexicanus. The present study provides a re-description of this fossil based on a microscopic analysis and the use of white and UV lights; these analyses led to the discovery of peculiar dental characters diagnostic of the genus Torvoneustes. This finding supports the re-classification of IGM 9026 under a new nominal combination asTorvoneustes mexicanus.

L., México [email protected] Resumen En la región Mixteca, al noroeste del Estado de Oaxaca, sur de México, afloran rocas del Jurásico Medio con una fauna fósil que consiste en su mayor parte de ammonoideos. En el Miembro Yucuñuti de la Formación Yucuñuti, fueron identificadas varias facies sedimentarias compuestas principalmente por: cuarzarenita, limolita y biomicrita, correspondientes a mares neríticos someros o epicontinentales con aporte de abundantes terrígenos. Se identificó la Zona de Asociación de Reineckeia– Neuqueniceras (Nueva), que se caracteriza por la predominancia de Reineckeidae y se correlaciona con la Zona Anceps del Caloviano medio de Europa. Se describen cinco ejemplares de las familias Perisphinctidae y Reineckeidae: Ch. cf. suborion (Burckhardt), Ch. praecursor (Mangold), N. inermis (Burckhardt), R. anceps (Reinecke) y R. tuberosa (Burckhardt). Se informa por primera vez para México la presencia de la especie R. anceps, índice de la Zona Estándar de Anceps del Caloviano medio temprano de Europa. Abstract In the Mixteca region, in northwestern Oaxaca state, Mexico, crop out Middle Jurassic rocks with a rich fossil fauna, consisting mostly of ammonoids. The CallovianYucuñuti Member of the Yucuñuti Formation, consists of nearshore to shelf siltstone, sandstone grit and biomicrite. Ammonoids present in this unit belong in the Reineckeia–Neuqueniceras Assemblage Zone (nov.), which is coeval to the European Anceps Zone, Stuebeli Subzone (base of the middle Callovian).
