Tous droits réservés 17/07 Page 2 1: Historique de la Ligne Dieppe-Newhaven Lien historique avec l’Angleterre, la ligne maritime Dieppe-Newhaven a bien failli disparaître à la fin du XXème siècle. Il n’en a pas toujours été ainsi. Au début du siècle dernier, Dieppe-Newhaven était l’une des plus importantes relations maritimes avec l’Angleterre. En 1903, Dieppe-Newhaven accueillait 202 000 passagers ! Dieppe-Newhaven est la plus ancienne des liaisons transmanche. Guillaume de Normandie serait parti de Dieppe en 1067 pour son second voyage en Angleterre conquise l’année précédente. De Brighton à Newhaven… Au début du XIXème siècle, les bateaux partis de Dieppe mouillaient devant Brighton, les passagers devant débarquer à l’aide de canots et chaloupes à rames. Ce ne fut qu’en 1823 que l’on aménagea une jetée (Chain Pier, ancêtre du West Pier, aujourd’hui disparu) afin de faciliter le débarquement. En 1824, la « General Steam Navigation Company » relie avec des bateaux à roues longs de 25 mètres (la largeur du Seven Sisters) l’Angleterre à Dieppe en neuf heures, deux fois par semaine Quelques années plus tard, on utilisera un vrai port abrité : Newhaven, aménagé par les chemins de fer britanniques. Le vrai démarrage de la ligne correspond à l’arrivée et au développement des chemins de fer. Newhaven est le seul port de pleine eau entre Dover et Portsmouth permettant l’accès des navires quasiment à tout moment. Ce port appartient maintenant à Newhaven Ports and Properties Ltd, dont le Conseil Départemental de la Seine Maritime est l’actionnaire principal, et subit des transformations constantes ; Newhaven vient d’être choisi comme base pour le projet de l’énorme ferme éolienne qui va s’implanter devant Brighton et Shoreham. Brighton est relié à Londres en 1840 et Newhaven en 1847. De l’autre côté, Rouen est relié à Paris en 1843 et à Dieppe en 1848, les tout premiers chemins de fer français. A l’aube du XXème siècle, le trajet Paris-Londres par Dieppe-Newhaven est considéré comme le plus rapide, le plus économique et le plus pittoresque. La mise en service de nouveaux paquebots comme l’Arundel, luxueux, rapides, confortables et l’arrivée des nouvelles technologies comme l’hélice, les turbines, souvent expérimentées sur les navires de la ligne, en augmenteront sa renommée, tout en réduisant la durée de la traversée à trois heures et parfois moins. Il exista un projet de train-ferry approuvé par les 2 compagnies de chemin de fer mais qui ne vit jamais le jour. La seule expérience de train-ferry fut celle de Dieppe- Southampton de 1917 à 1918 pour l’effort de guerre britannique. L’arrivée des car-ferries en 1964 fit entrer la ligne dans l’époque moderne, permettant le transport sur un même navire, des passagers, des voitures et des poids lourds. Tous droits réservés 17/07 Page 3 2: La ligne en pratique Les navires : Le Côte d’Albâtre et le Seven Sisters sont deux car ferries identiques (sister-ships) fabriqués pour la ligne Dieppe-Newhaven par les chantiers navals Barreras de Vigo en Espagne pour le compte de l’armateur « Transmanche Ferries », propriété du Conseil Départemental de Seine Maritime. Ils ont été mis en service en 2006. D’une longueur hors tout de 142,45 mètres, d’une largeur de 24.7 mètres, ils sont propulsés par 2 moteurs Wärtsila de 9450 KW (12848 cv) de puissance permettant une vitesse maximale de 23 nœuds (42km/h) et une vitesse usuelle de 18 nœuds (33km/h) Pour les manœuvres de port, les navires disposent de 2 propulseurs d’étrave de marque Kamewa d’une puissance de 1300 KW chacun (1767 cv). Ces navires peuvent transporter 600 passagers et 50 membres d’équipage ainsi que 120 voitures et 50 poids-lourds dans la version mixte fret et passagers. Ces car-ferries possèdent huit ponts dont un pont promenade extérieur. Les aménagements passagers et équipages se situent aux niveaux 6 et 7. On y trouve le bureau d’accueil et d’information, les salons, la cafétéria, le bar, la boutique et les cabines. Les ponts 3, 4 et 5 sont les garages destinés à recevoir les véhicules de tourisme, les autocars et les poids lourds. Les ponts inférieurs contiennent la salle des machines, les soutes et les ballasts. Ces navires offrent un remarquable confort et tenue à la mer grâce aux stabilisateurs qui devront être rétractés avant la rentrée dans les jetées.
