SkyTalk 2015 — 19 THE EXCLUSIVE: I-COM BAND Available ONLY From The International Federation
The I-Com band is used to band youngsters in the same manner as previous I.F. leg bands. The difference is, the separately purchased Electronic Race Chip then clips onto the I-Com band, leaving the other leg free for a second band, if desired. The e-chip may be installed at anytime.
The cost of the I-Com band is 45 cents each, the same price as regular stock bands. Stock bands and I-Com bands are sold in Units of 25 bands for $11.25 plus $5.00 shipping. The cost of 100 I-Com bands is $45.00, I-Com rings may be ordered as your regular club plus $5.00 shipping. All IF bands may be purchased by band. The I-Com rings are available from the I.F. now. active I.F. members only. Matt was born in 1938 and made his living as a surveyor for a construction company until his retirement. He flew pigeons in Elmont, L.I. NY under the “Elmont Loft” banner for well over 50 years. Matt was a tremendous pigeon flier, having won more club, combine, futurity and derby races then probably most anyone in the NY area, but he also served the sport of pigeon flying, he was always willing to get involved whenever there was a need. He was the best liberator that the Long Island combine ever had for a very, very long time, always liberated with the best interest of the birds. Matt always fought for what would be best for the pigeons. He would get into heated arguments at meetings over pigeon issues but never made it personal. You never had to wonder how he felt about an issue that was discussed because he never was afraid to speak his mind, and generally it was always for the best, that will be sorrowfully missed.
Not only was he involved locally, he also was involved nationally, as he was the IF President from 1989 to 1995 and has since been an IF Trustee until the time of his passing.
Matt enjoyed attending all pigeon functions, always attending every IF Convention year after year with his wife Alice and will be missed tremendously as no convention was complete unless Matt was seen sitting chatting with a group of friends from various parts of the country. He also supported every local auction that was held in the NY area buying pigeons he didn’t need.
To Alice, his children and grand children, the members of the East Meadow H.P.C. extend their deepest condolences. Matt will be greatly missed by all. Personally, I will forever miss my very special friend and training partner. May you rest in peace Matt.

This is “Het Ooievaartje 207” she comes out of the breeding pair from Pieter Beerda from Ter Idzard. In 1987 as a youngster she ws the Best National Young Bird in the National Competition “Wie Heeft Ze Beter.” She was raced mostly to a nest and won prizes from Minderhout up to and including Bourges for more than 13,000 points. At that time a record. Her full brother a year later was 2nd in the National Orleans against 28,500 pigeons. “Het Ooievaartje 207” was sold to Taiwan where her offspring won various Derby races for the loft of Dhanin. We understand that many clubs start out with a high turnout for Champion Loft Award Rules shipping and later in the season the number of loft’s shipping drops, therefore, the new rules allow consideration for our smaller clubs to CATEGORIES: compete for awards. Now, races with fewer than five lofts will qualify • 5-25- lofts • 76-150 lofts as long as there are three lofts at three different locations participating in the race. 1ST PLACE $1,000 WINNER Andrew Thomas Browsky Deerfield, MA Grade 12 - Frontier Regional High School IF Member: Myself, as well as my grandfather Thomas (Tim) Tessier, Leader of Northwest Junior Flyers. Generations of Flight My grandfather and I have always been as close from the time I was a little kid. He’s the type of guy who gets along with just about everybody and will always leave you with a smile on your face. He has not only been MY role model, but that to many kids and adults as the leader and founder of Northwest Junior Flyers Pigeon Club. From a young age he has always brought my brother and I to his Friday night gatherings at the local snowmobile club where the club meets, whether it being meetings or the auctions. In the early stages of flight I got enrolled in his club officially as well as the International Federation of American Homing Pigeons. My Grandfather has helped me to evolve assimilate into the ways of a pigeon member and I now have many birds myself who fly one hundred to five hundred miles. Never could have I even dreamt of a better mentor and friend to help me fly and succeed. Not only do I race homing pigeons I also race motocross, which is a high intensity sport built on focus and stamina. Every racer knows the adrenaline rush they feel is what keeps them coming back every weekend. I carry that same feeling in a different way over to racing homing pigeons. Some of the best memories of my life have been the sleepless nights of shipping the birds and that fast heart beat in bed when your mind will not settle. To go along with that feeling is the pride and confidence you have that your birds can win this race. The second I see them circling to finally touch down on the coup with a few quick calls, it’s like I just crossed the finish line in my race. Unaware with how their times matched up yet, a spike of adrenaline alike the one I often feel on my dirt bike fills my heart. My grandfather is one of many great people I have taken the journey of racing with. The people associated with our club are all amazing, kind-hearted folks who would give you the shirt off their back. Growing up with people like this has taught me to have a mature look on life. I feel this way because they have taught me to focus more of my energy on things that matter like school work, working hard to make a dollar and enjoying the finer things like racing with these incredible birds few know of. I am proud of the young adult I have become and writing this paper makes me reflect heavily on the great experiences I have been through, people I have met, and the feelings I have poured into the sport throughout my years. I always hope to be a part of the great community involved in homing pigeons especially my second family in the Northwest Junior Flyers. My grandfather brought me into something that, as a young kid thought was a cool opportunity to pet soft, pretty colored birds, but 14 years later, something has shaped my view on having fun. It has brought me life lessons, trials, tribulations, and absolute delight. Most of all it has brought me quality time with the grandfather I love, while sharing a common passion.

What Homing Pigeons Mean to Me I remember sitting at my kitchen table just a few years ago trying to decide on my topic for the eighth grade science fair. Plants and erupting volcanoes were pretty cool, but nothing was interesting enough to capture the eyes of the judges. After a few hours of frustration and indecisiveness, I decided a volcano would be, well, “good enough.” It wasn’t until my dad came home that I decided a volcano was too boring, but homing pigeons were a subject of interest. Nobody seems to know what they really are capable of. It amazes me how smart these birds are. The fact they can be shipped hundreds of miles away and return without hesitation is a skill in itself. I cannot believe I had not previously thought of this subject before, especially since they’ve taken up a permanent residence in my backyard. All my life I’ve grown up around homing pigeons and the craziness that goes along with them. See, my great- grandfather raced birds his entire life and even though I never got to know him, my mom would always tell me about him and how she never thought it was odd my dad raced birds because it almsot seems like a family tradition. Yes, that’s right, my dad also races homing pigeons. You could say I’m an expert, but that’s not the case. I do, indeed know how to take care of them; I know when they eat, they bathe, how long they are let out for when it’s nice out, and how far their training toss was that Saturday afternoon. It’s easy to understand the daily routine of these birds, but it is amazing how much they have actually taught me. “I’m going to feed the birds,” Dad would call in every night at five-thirty to my brother and I. It has always seemed so simple and meaningless to us since we’ve heard it every night since we were babies, but taking a step back and looking at the responsibility and commitment he has for these birds is far from simple. As I’ve grown up I have come to know that every morning and every night I could find my dad in the pigeon coup down the street feeding the birds. Sometimes my brother and I would walk down to visit or watch the pigeons fly around and around and around as the sun began to fade in the distance. It was mesmerizing as watching their once large, wide circles kiminish into smaller and small circles waiting for Dad to give them the “heads up” it was time to head in to eat. These birds were like is other kids, and he took care of them just as well as he took care of my brother and I. These birds have taken up a lot of time and effort, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. It’s a hobby my dad enjoys and takes pride in and we support him in every way possible. As kids, he always tried to get me into the pigeon tosses and training—he even gave me my own bird. His name was Lucky, and he sure was a lucky one; he won training tosses and had the best times for months. When he was gone it was as if a family member had passed away; I was heartbroken and my dad was beside himself as well. That was my first experience realizing how much these birds meant to me and my family—they’re like family members. I have seen the best and the worst of homing pigeon racing over the past nineteen years of my life. Lost races and lost birds have been some of the worst, but more good has come from these group of homing pigeons than bad. They have brought joy and responsibility to my family throughout the years and, look, they even helped me get a winning science fair project.

By: Erik Hall The 134th IF Convention was held on October 30th through November 2nd at the Clarion Hotel and Conference Center in Ronkonkoma, Long Island, NY. After a year of planning, a successful startup auction, (thanks to so many generous donations of excellent pigeons) and the endless amount of work receiving convention birds by Chairman, Joe Lorefice, the planning was almost completed. The Long Island Combine sponsored the convention after another sponsor backed out. Joe Lorefice, who had successfully chaired an IF convention 3 years earlier, agreed to chair it again with the help of myself as co-chair and Grace Mehl as convention secretary. The convention was on!
Attending the convention were approximately 50 registered guests at the hotel from across the US with about 100 local flyers. The convention race had over 1600 entries handled by 75 lofts. The short Enders would fly 265 miles to the long end of 375 miles.
Shipping night had a large crowd for the interface of breeders and handlers at the hotel. Each breeder and handler had great expectations of the race to come discussing each bird’s potential. When shipping was complete, the 653 convention birds that had survived the season of training and racing were loaded on the truck to make the trip to Somerset, PA for the liberation on the following morning. The breeders and handlers were left to discuss the next day’s race that did not have favorable weather reports for an easy race. On the down side, sadly during the evening a long time conventioneer, Jerry Thomas of Syracuse, NY, became ill and was taken to the hospital.
SkyTalk 2015 — 83 134th IF Convention - 2014 Ronkonkoma, New York (Continued) On Friday morning the ladies departed the hotel to begin their itinerary that was so well planned by Christy Colondona. For their first day the ladies went to the Long Island Aquarium, followed by a visit to the Baiting Hollow Farms (a horse rescue facility and a winery). They enjoyed an afternoon of wine tasting and a cheese buffet. At the end of a very nice day, they had an excellent dinner at a local restaurant.
While the ladies were enjoying their day, the men were ready for their day. Word came that the birds were up at 8:00 am into cloudy skies with a SE wind (right on their noses) along the entire course. At home it was cloudy with an ENE wind - it was going to be a real tough day. Again, the weather forecast for the following day was for East (headwinds) with heavy rain.
After hearing the tough forecast, the men were off for the loft visitations. The first loft was owned by Grace Mehl, (EuroGem Loft), Grace welcomed everyone with coffee and buns and her immaculate lofts were enjoyed by everyone. Grace is a tough flyer who began flying when she retired from the Navy. However, she was not new to the sport as her father was a lifelong flyer and one of the best. The next loft is owned by Eddie Stoddard. Eddie, too, has an immaculate loft which is probably because he damn near lives there. Eddie is also a very tough competitor. The last loft was owned Joe Politi. This was an absolute state of the art loft and show place. Joe, also, has been one of the best flyers for the last forty years. Upon the completion of the loft visits, of which all three were very enjoyable, everyone dispersed to the various lofts to await the arrival of the convention birds.
Upon returning to my loft, it was most enjoyable to visit with my many friends (most of who have watched several convention races with me over the years). The new addition was Sal Rodriguez, who traveled from Utah just so he could sit in my yard on a chilly cloudy day. As always, my good friend, Kevin Williams from Braintree, MA, was here so I didn’t have to worry about getting the refreshments on ice. Though on this day, Kevin and I mostly preferred coffee, Another great friend, Vinnie “the Coach” Torre, who knows a lot more about heating food and cooking than I, took charge so I was also relieved of that chore. The afternoon was spent with the best of my friends and a lot of good pigeon talk, food and refreshments.
84 – SkyTalk 2015 134th IF Convention - 2014 Ronkonkoma, New York (Continued) As the day wore on, discussions turned to when everyone thought we would get pigeons. Phones got busy, but still no word. As I fly 323 miles, calls were made to the short lofts - still nothing. Finally, shortly before 5 pm, word of some pigeons on the Short End. Some quick calculations and all agreed it would be hard to get day birds at my distance on this heavy overcast day with the wind on their nose - the calculations were right. At the end of the day, there were 25 day birds up short with one bird on its loft at 11 pm. Overall, it was great spending the day with friends, but disappointing that the birds didn’t make it.
The next morning we had heavy rain and strong head winds. Just a few minutes after day break the first second day bird came to my loft. Regardless of the heavy rains, the birds were close. As the day progressed, the birds were reported from most everyone.
In the meantime, after breakfast the ladies departed from the hotel for a day of sightseeing and shopping - regardless of the nasty weather. The ladies then had a nice lunch followed by going to see the show, “EVITA.” Christy Colondona did a super job with the ladies itinerary. They all raved about what a great time they had. Thanks Christy.
For the men, we were fortunate to have seminars given by two well-respected and knowledgeable people, Dr. Paul Miller. Dr. Miller filled in on short notice for Dr. Kazmierczak who had to cancel due to health problems. We certainly wish Dr. K the very best and a speedy recovery. Dr. Miller is so knowledgeable and always does a great job - he gave a wonderful seminar. The second speaker was none other than Ed Minvielle (Siegels) whose travels take him worldwide visiting with the best of pigeon flyers. Ed has a vast knowledge of all facets of pigeon racing. Both seminars were enjoyed by all. Unfortunately, many handlers missed the seminars due to the fact that they spent the day waiting for birds.
After the seminars we had an auction of 53 pigeons from Sal Rodriguez of Utah with his great family of “Kannibaal” pigeons and Ed Minvielle with the Super “Colin Walker Janssens” (Ed even threw in a couple of his fantastic “Chocolate pair pigeons”). Both men represented themselves well with excellent quality pigeons.

The auction did real well, leaving both Sal and Ed, as well as the buyers, very pleased. The down side of the afternoon was that we all learned that Jerry Thomas, who was taken to the hospital on shipping night, had passed away. Prayers go out to his family, he will be sorely missed.
The banquet started a little slow, as a committee led by Charlie Wind, (who is the main man on Long Island when it comes to clocks) was downloading the race while everyone was anxious to get the results of the two-day race. When the results were announced, the winner was A&F loft, (Anthony & Frank Catanzaro) of Elmont, with a winning speed of 927 Y.P.M... A&F not only won, but was Second by one minute behind the first bird. Remarkably, both birds were bred by Butch Gentile, Parkview Loft, formally from Long Island, now residing in Spring Hill, Florida. What an accomplishment for both breeder and handler. Third, was Trackside Loft (John Russo) clocking a bird from Ed Abramoski, the super gentleman from Buffalo, NY. Ed’s birds are most always at the top in convention races. After the results were announced, Chairman Joe Lorefice welcomed everyone to the banquet. Later, with the help of Grace Mehl, door prizes and raffle prizes were given out. The rest of the night was spent having a good meal, refreshments, dancing, and a lot of good conversations.
Sunday morning was breakfast and goodbyes until next year. A great job was done by Joey Lorefice, with special thanks to Grace Mehl, Charlie Wind, Rich Neske, and Val Matteucci.
The 2015 IF convention will be held in New Jersey with Vinnie Torre and Stanley Krawiec at the helm. This promises to be another excellent convention and I hope to see everyone there
Not only are conventions a great time to visit with friends, but with today’s dwindling number of flyers, high cost of running a club, and shipping costs, it is a great way to raise money to offset this burden. Hopefully, more clubs or combines will consider sponsoring one.
