A guide to the Government for BIA members Correct as of 26 June 2020 This is a briefing for BIA members on the Government led by Boris Johnson and key ministerial appointments for our sector after the December 2019 General Election and February 2020 Cabinet reshuffle. Following the Conservative Party’s compelling victory, the Government now holds a majority of 80 seats in the House of Commons. The life sciences sector is high on the Government’s agenda and Boris Johnson has pledged to make the UK “the leading global hub for life sciences after Brexit”. With its strong majority, the Government has the power to enact the policies supportive of the sector in the Conservatives 2019 Manifesto. All in all, this indicates a positive outlook for life sciences during this Government’s tenure. What an Amazing Year It Has Been! Thanks to The
What an amazing year it has been! Thanks to the support I have received from many people in becoming the MP for Thirsk and Malton, I feel I have already managed to get fully involved in the issues that impact our daily lives in North Yorkshire. In Parliament there are matters of both international and national importance to debate and decide upon but I and my team are very focused on those things closer to home that are vital to maintaining and improving our work, home and leisure times. Foreign Affairs Thank you to those who responded to my questionnaire about military action in Syria. The increase in terrorist activity across the world from Islamic State is frightening. However the long day and evening in the House of Commons showed how open, frank, democratic debate is something we must be proud of. Wouldn't it be great if all countries and their people had the same political freedom? After careful consideration and in respect to the feeling of the constituents I stand by the Government's decision to act and I hope that a more peaceful and safer new year can be achieved through the combined work of the international community. The refugee crisis means many will be displaced from their homes this Christmas. The goodwill extended by European nations to those fleeing in fear will hopefully lead to positive and fair results for residents and migrants alike. Energy Keeping in contact with constituents, whether by questionnaires, newsletters, post or email, is vital for me to do my job properly. -
