Add music by Warren Ellis and you have one of the most singular songs in Marianne Faithfull’s multi-faceted career as a recording artist. ‘She Walks in Beauty’ was written by Lord Byron after attending a party at Lady Sarah Caroline Sitwell’s on June 11, 1814, and falling under the spell of the beautiful Mrs Anne Beatrix Wilmot. It is reported that, upon returning to his rooms, he toasted her health, drained a tumbler of brandy, then sat and wrote the poem. But did he get the girl? It was published a year later in his volume of Hebrew Melodies. “It’s very romantic, not like you imagine Byron to be” says Marianne. “It’s so beautiful, and that’s why I like it. I love the other side of Byron too, but this is really amazing, sublime. And I was very drawn to the ability to do really beautiful rhymes. I think that’s from being a songwriter. It’s incredibly nice. Not what I connect with Lord Byron at all.” Having long proved herself a great interpreter of song, Marianne brings to vivid life this great poem in her new album – She Walks In Beauty – which will be available on April 30th. It could be said that Marianne Faithfull has been preparing to make this album for the best part of 60 years. “When I was 13 or 14, I bought myself a book, Palgrave’s Golden Treasury, and that really turned me on to poetry, lots of different poetry,” she says. “And then there was my English teacher at the convent, Mrs Simpson. I was studying for my A Levels in the year before I got discovered. Very happy. Then I was discovered and never finished them, but I learnt a lot and it never left me, so I had this idea all my life, really, that I wanted to make the most beautiful poetry record with music.” At 73, she’s about to make her dream come true. But that poetry record wouldn’t be the same without the incredible music composed by Marianne’s long-time friend and collaborator, Warren Ellis. Member of the Bad Seeds since 1993, and composer of almost 20 film and theatre scores, including for The Road and The Proposition, Warren has worked with Marianne as a musician and songwriter since her 2005 album, Before the Poison and, with producer Head, has created the delicate musical textures on She Walks In Beauty. Those textures counterpoint the readings, Marianne’s voice bearing the marks of someone that has lived many lives and felt the passing touch of many deaths. It’s a voice in which the very grain of poetry – love, longing, intoxication, inspiration – has concentrated itself, and speaks of its own accord, and walks in its own beauty.     Marianne Faithfull’s long and distinguished career has seen her emerge as one of the most original female singersongwriters this country has produced; Utterly unsentimental yet somehow affectionate, Marianne possesses that rare ability to transform any lyric into something compelling and utterly personal; and not just on her own songs, for she has become a master of the art of finding herself in the words and music of others. Marianne Faithfull’s story, has of course, been well documented, not least in her entertaining and insightful autobiography FAITHFULL (1994). Born in Hampstead in December 1946 Faithfull’s career as the crown princess of swinging London was launched with As Tears Go By; the first song ever written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, five albums followed whilst Marianne also embarked on a parallel career as an actress, both on film in GIRL ON A MOTORCYCLE (1968) and on stage in Chekhov’s THREE SISTERS (1967) and HAMLET (1969) By the end of the Sixties personal problems halted Marianne’s career and her drug addiction took over. Faithfull emerged tentatively in the mid-Seventies with a country album called DREAMIN’ MY DREAMS (1976) but it was her furious re-surfacing on BROKEN ENGLISH in 1979 that definitively brought her back. Further new wave explorations followed with DANGEROUS ACQUAINTANCES (1981) and A CHILD’S ADVENTURE (1983). But despite her new creative vigour, Marianne was not entirely free of the chemicals that had ravaged her in the sixties. Displaying a sadness tempered by optimism, and a despair rescued by humour Marianne returned, finally clean with a collection of classic pop, blues and art songs on the critically lauded STRANGE WEATHER (1987).

    Intimacies of an Icon Iain Forsyth and Jane Pollard stage a fictionalised 24 hours in the life of Nick Cave, replacing traditional rockumentary aesthetics with an exploration of how we spend our time on earth. Songwriter, musician, author, screenwriter and composer, Nick Cave, is a true rock star best known for his mesmerising live performances and bizarre yet haunting lyrics. For 20,000 Days on Earth the famously camera-shy Cave collaborates with video artists turned feature film directors, Iain Forsyth and Jane Pollard, in a production which tracks a fictional 24 hours in Cave’s real life amongst his family and friends. Cave has described this day as “more real and less real, more true and less true, more interesting and less interesting than my actual day, depending on how you look at it.” In under two hours we follow Cave through his home town of Brighton and his relationships with his family, through writing and rehearsing, performing and recording; through discussions with previous musical partners Kylie Minogue and Blixa Bargeld and actor Ray Winstone; and we reach into his past through sessions with psychoanalyst Darian Leader, and time spent in Cave’s archive – brought over from Australia and re- structured for the film. While the personalities and conversations of 20,000 Days on Earth are genuine, it is not a docu-film; the situations and locations are wholly staged, a decision made by Forsyth and Pollard who affirm that they “never wanted it to look any other way.” Having always explored musicians, music and performance in a factual, documentary-esque manner in their visual art, the directors had long since identified a problem with realism in documentaries.
