Twenty-eight years ago Golden and Wasil (1987) presented the use of the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) for ranking outstanding sports records. Since then much has changed with respect to sports and sports records, the application and theory of the AHP, and the availability of the internet for accessing data. In this paper we revisit the ranking of outstanding sports records and build on past work, focusing on a comprehensive set of records from the four major American professional sports. We interviewed and corresponded with two sports experts and applied an AHP-based approach that features both the traditional pairwise comparison and the AHP rating method to elicit the necessary judgments from these experts. The most outstanding sports records are presented, discussed and compared to Golden and Wasil’s results from a quarter century earlier. • RAYS CLIPS August 20, 2010
RAYS CLIPS August 20, 2010 Tampa Bay Rays are doing the right thing by protecting Jeremy Hellickson's arm By John Romano, Times Sports Columnist With Jeremy Hellickson, the future takes precedence over the present. ST. PETERSBURG After his first three big-league starts, the rookie pitcher in Washington had a 2-0 record. His ERA was 1.86, and opponents were batting .149 against him. Stephen Strasburg ended up on the cover of Sports Illustrated. After his first three big-league starts, the rookie pitcher in Tampa Bay had a 3-0 record. His ERA was 1.35, and opponents were batting .136 against him. Jeremy Hellickson could very well end up in Triple A after his next start tonight. Kind of makes you wonder if the Rays are - how shall I put this - insane? In the ramshackle history of an expansion franchise, no Rays starting pitcher has ever made such a dramatic entrance. Hellickson has been poised, he has been efficient, he has, by far, been better than anyone could have reasonably expected. So are the Rays making a huge mistake by not taking advantage of Hellickson while fighting for first place? No, they're not. At least, not at this point. Certainly, we can all agree on the notion of seizing the day in a pennant race. We wouldn't mind spending more of ownership's money, and we might be willing to trade a prospect at the right price. But risking a young player's future? That should be nonnegotiable. And that's why this story is not as simple as it seems.

  • A National Tradition
Baseball A National Tradition. by Phyllis McIntosh. “As American as baseball and apple pie” is a phrase Americans use to describe any ultimate symbol of life and culture in the United States. Baseball, long dubbed the national pastime, is such a symbol. It is first and foremost a beloved game played at some level in virtually every American town, on dusty sandlots and in gleaming billion-dollar stadiums. But it is also a cultural phenom- enon that has provided a host of colorful characters and cherished traditions. Most Americans can sing at least a few lines of the song “Take Me Out to the Ball Game.” Generations of children have collected baseball cards with players’ pictures and statistics, the most valuable of which are now worth several million dollars. More than any other sport, baseball has reflected the best and worst of American society. Today, it also mirrors the nation’s increasing diversity, as countries that have embraced America’s favorite sport now send some of their best players to compete in the “big leagues” in the United States. Baseball is played on a Baseball’s Origins: after hitting a ball with a stick. • Baltimore Orioles: Jeremy Hellickson Trade Is a Head Scratcher
Baltimore Orioles: Jeremy Hellickson Trade Is a Head Scratcher Author : A few nights ago, the MLB trade market was active. There were three trades completed Friday evening, all of which involved teams in the NL East. One of those trades also involved the Baltimore Orioles, as they acquired starting pitcher Jeremy Hellickson from the Philadelphia Phillies. In exchange, the O's sent outfielder Hyun Soo Kim, minor league lefty Garrett Cleavinger and some international bonus money to the Phils. But the fact that the Orioles, who are widely expected to sell, are adding a starting pitcher, leads to the question, why make such a move? Following play on Sunday evening, Baltimore sat four games under .500, with a 50-54 record following a win over the Texas Rangers. That record is good for fourth in the AL East, which is 6.5 games behind the division leading New York Yankees. As for the Wild Card, they are 5.5 games back, and need to leap frog five clubs to make it into the playoff picture. As a result, adding an inning eater type of arm, who is no more than above average, is not exactly the type of 1 / 2 move that turns a team's season around. Sure the team has been below average in the rotation, but adding Hellickson honestly does not do much to change that. This is not a move for the future either. Hellickson, who is 30 years old, is pitching on a one-year deal. After the season, he becomes a free agent once more as he looks to enter his age 31 season.
