The photograph albums were created as promotional tools for LSU and were sent to Louisiana high schools. Some images formed a part of the exhibits in the LSU Historical Museum formerly in the Memorial Tower, and other images were reproduced for exhibits at Hill Memorial Library. The exhibition catalog for “A Golden Century: One Hundred Years of LSU Football” is cataloged within LSU Special Collections holdings, location GV958 .L65 G65 1993. Many of the images throughout this collection are of indeterminate origin. SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE The photographs in this collection are chiefly from the 1886-1925 period and document life on the downtown campus. Also included are images of the present campus from 1922 to 1997. These include portraits of students and graduating classes; portrait and group photographs of faculty and administrators; images of campus buildings and grounds on the downtown campus and the present campus; sporting events and teams; the bands; classes; student life and activities; and special events. Student portraits include cadets in uniform and “town” students wearing civilian clothes. Graduating classes include those of 1872-1874, 1882, 1883, 1888-1889, 1897, 1898, and 1906. Portraits of faculty and administrators include William Tecumseh Sherman, David Boyd, Thomas Boyd, James Nicholson, Charles Coates, William Dodson, William Dalrymple, James W. Dupree, Louise and Mercedes Garig, Arthur Prescott, Robert Himes, Thomas Atkinson, and others. Group photographs of faculty include the faculty of 1888-1889 and 1898-1899. Images of campus buildings and grounds pertaining to the downtown campus (1886-1925) include aerial views and views of new buildings under construction and completed. Among these are Foster Hall, Hill Memorial Library, Heard Hall, Robertson Hall, Garig Hall, and Alumni Memorial Hall. Also included are the Pentagon Barracks, the President’s Residence, the “Colony,” “Pest House,” and the old agriculture and chemistry buildings. Images of sporting events and teams include the 1902 LSU-Auburn game played on the downtown campus, football teams from 1894 to 1915, baseball teams, the 1909 basketball team, track and field teams, and fencing teams. Images of the bands include those from circa 1897-1916. Classes and student activities include classes in mathematics, botany, English, veterinary science, agriculture, chemistry, and civil engineering. Student life and activities include images of cadet drill, firing artillery and rifles, studying in barracks rooms, group photographs of fraternities, the Debaters and Orators, the Hobo Gang, and the annual fancy dress stag ball. Images of the present campus (1926-present) include the campus dedication ceremonies; photographs of campus design proposals by the Olmsted Brothers and Theodore Link; images of athletic events and teams, such as the Civilian Rifle Team; football players such as Charles Alexander, Billy Cannon, Tommy Casanova, Wendell Davis, Bert Jones, and Jerry Stovall; cheerleaders; the band; homecoming festivities; baseball and basketball games; Pete Maravich; and Homecoming of 1941. Other photographs include agriculture exhibit trains, library staff, Freshman Day festivities form the early 1940s, President Troy Middleton, and Schwing lecturers from the 1960s and 1970s. Views of the campus include Coates Hall, Prescott Hall, and other buildings around the quadrangle; the Memorial Tower; the law building; Middleton Library; Pan American House (now Acadian Hall); the Music and Page 4 of 66 LOUISIANA STATE UNIVERISTY PHOTOGRAPH COLLECTION RG #A5000 1862-1997 SPECIAL COLLECTIONS, LSU LIBRARIES Dramatic Arts Building; and aerial views of the campus during the 1930s. Other images include an aerial view of Huey Long’s funeral on the state capitol grounds, construction of the new state capitol and razing of the downtown campus, the Seminary and grounds, and the Crowley Rice Station. Also included are photographs from two exhibits held in Hill Memorial Library: “A Golden Century: One Hundred Years of LSU Football” (1993) and “Troy H. Middleton: Soldier, Educator, Citizen” (1995).
