BIOGRAPHICAL/HISTORICAL NOTE

The Louisiana State University (LSU) Photograph Collection is comprised of images commissioned by LSU for use in catalogs, photograph albums, and other publications. The photograph albums were created as promotional tools for LSU and were sent to Louisiana high schools. Some images formed a part of the exhibits in the LSU Historical Museum formerly in the Memorial Tower, and other images were reproduced for exhibits at Hill Memorial Library. The exhibition catalog for “A Golden Century: One Hundred Years of LSU Football” is cataloged within LSU Special Collections holdings, location GV958 .L65 G65 1993. Many of the images throughout this collection are of indeterminate origin.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The photographs in this collection are chiefly from the 1886-1925 period and document life on the downtown campus. Also included are images of the present campus from 1922 to 1997. These include portraits of students and graduating classes; portrait and group photographs of faculty and administrators; images of campus buildings and grounds on the downtown campus and the present campus; sporting events and teams; the bands; classes; student life and activities; and special events. Student portraits include cadets in uniform and “town” students wearing civilian clothes. Graduating classes include those of 1872-1874, 1882, 1883, 1888-1889, 1897, 1898, and 1906. Portraits of faculty and administrators include William Tecumseh Sherman, David Boyd, Thomas Boyd, James Nicholson, Charles Coates, William Dodson, William Dalrymple, James W. Dupree, Louise and Mercedes Garig, Arthur Prescott, Robert Himes, Thomas Atkinson, and others. Group photographs of faculty include the faculty of 1888-1889 and 1898-1899.

Images of campus buildings and grounds pertaining to the downtown campus (1886-1925) include aerial views and views of new buildings under construction and completed. Among these are Foster Hall, Hill Memorial Library, Heard Hall, Robertson Hall, Garig Hall, and Alumni Memorial Hall. Also included are the Pentagon Barracks, the President’s Residence, the “Colony,” “Pest House,” and the old agriculture and chemistry buildings. Images of sporting events and teams include the 1902 LSU-Auburn game played on the downtown campus, football teams from 1894 to 1915, baseball teams, the 1909 basketball team, track and field teams, and fencing teams. Images of the bands include those from circa 1897-1916. Classes and student activities include classes in mathematics, botany, English, veterinary science, agriculture, chemistry, and civil engineering. Student life and activities include images of cadet drill, firing artillery and rifles, studying in barracks rooms, group photographs of fraternities, the Debaters and Orators, the Hobo Gang, and the annual fancy dress stag ball.

Images of the present campus (1926-present) include the campus dedication ceremonies; photographs of campus design proposals by the Olmsted Brothers and Theodore Link; images of athletic events and teams, such as the Civilian Rifle Team; football players such as Charles Alexander, Billy Cannon, Tommy Casanova, Wendell Davis, Bert Jones, and Jerry Stovall; cheerleaders; the band; homecoming festivities; baseball and basketball games; Pete Maravich; and Homecoming of 1941. Other photographs include agriculture exhibit trains, library staff, Freshman Day festivities form the early 1940s, President Troy Middleton, and Schwing lecturers from the 1960s and 1970s. Views of the campus include Coates Hall, Prescott Hall, and other buildings around the quadrangle; the Memorial Tower; the law building; Middleton Library; Pan American House (now Acadian Hall); the Music and

Also included are photographs from two exhibits held in Hill Memorial Library: “A Golden Century: One Hundred Years of LSU Football” (1993) and “Troy H. Middleton: Soldier, Educator, Citizen” (1995).

Subgroup 1. LSU Photograph Collection, 1862-1997

Series I. Athletics, 1896-1915

This series contains group photographs of the football teams from 1896 to 1915 and the 1902 LSU- Auburn game. Also included are a photograph of the 1908 baseball team at the Gettysburg battlefield and the 1909 basketball team.

Series II. Audubon Sugar School, 1887-1910

This series contains photographs of the cane fields, laboratories, equipment, and students of the Audubon Sugar School in New Orleans and after its move to Baton Rouge. Also included are photographs of experimental cane harvesters and cotton and tobacco plants.

Series III. Downtown Campus Buildings, 1896-1929

This series contains photographs of the buildings on the downtown campus. These include the agriculture building, Alumni Memorial Hall and the groundbreaking ceremony, Hill Memorial Library, the Pentagon Barracks, interior views of classrooms and laboratories, The Colony and Foster Hall dormitories, Heard Hall, Irion Hall, Robertson Hall and its machine shop, the president’s residence, and veterinary infirmary.

Series IV. Faculty, 1866-1924

This series includes portrait photographs of such faculty members as David and Thomas Boyd, William Dalrymple, Samuel Lockett, William Tecumseh Sherman, Thomas Atkinson, Charles Coates, William Dodson, James Nicholson, James Broussard, Walter Fleming, Robert Himes, Louise and Mercedes Garig, and Arthur Prescott. Also included are group photographs of faculty from 1888-1889 and 1898- 1899.

Series V. Scenes of the Downtown Campus, circa 1890-1909

This series consists of images taken of the downtown campus grounds that do not pertain to a specific building. These include the athletic field, the “avenue of oaks” that is now Lafayette Street, University Lake (now Capitol Lake), the botanical and horticulture gardens, the campus landscaping, and birds-eye views of campus.

Series VI. Students - Individuals, 1862-1899

Consisting of portrait photographs of identified individual students, this series includes photographs of George Waters Stafford, one of the first cadets at the Seminary; Tilman Lanier Grimes, one of the students in the first graduating class in 1869; Leopold Kaffie, center on the football team; and other individuals.

Series VII. Students - Individuals and Groups, 1899-1914

This series consists of portrait photographs of unidentified individual students and student groups engaged in various activities in which the members might be identified. Photographs include agriculture and botany classes, cadets in formation, and a photograph of the 25th anniversary reunion of the class of 1880.

Series VIII. Students - Groups and Activities, 1871-1917

This series contains photographs of graduating classes, student clubs and organizations such as the Hobo Gang, Debaters and Orators, and Kappa Sigma fraternity, students in classrooms, the annual fancy dress stag ball, and the Prize Company of 1887.

Subgroup 2. LSU Photograph Collection, 1910-1997

This subgroup contains photographs of the downtown campus from 1910 to 1925, but focuses primarily on the present campus from 1925 to 1997. Photographs depict various aspects of student life, athletics, the campus buildings and grounds, LSU presidents, and commemorative events and class reunions. Images of student life include activities at the Huey Long pool and fieldhouse, fraternities and sororities, Freshman Day and Homecoming in 1941, and photographs of various classes. Athletics images include portraits of Charles Alexander, Billy Cannon, Tommy Casanova, Bert Jones, Pete Maravich, and Jerry Stoval, track meets at the Bernie Moore Track Stadium, baseball games at Alex Box Stadium, cheerleaders, and the Tiger Band. Photographs of the campus buildings and grounds include images of the Pentagon Barracks on the downtown campus and present campus, the Music and Dramatic Arts Building, Coates Hall, the Quadrangle, the Union, and other buildings.

Photographs of LSU Presidents include Thomas Boyd, Campbell Hodges, and Troy Middleton. Photographs of commemorative and class reunions include the 50th anniversary of coeducation in 1956, the formal dedication of the present campus in 1926, the formal dedication of Middleton Library in 1959, and the 50-year reunion of the class of 1930. This subgroup also includes photographs of several lecturers who participated in the LSU Libraries Schwing Lecture Series, 1978-1992. Numbers following identified lecturers correspond to the lecture number. For these photographs the circa date indicates the year of the lecture, not the date of the photograph. Photographs of the Agricultural Demonstration Trains include several images of Dr. W. H. Dalrymple lecturing across Louisiana, 1910- 1911.

Subgroup 3. Exhibit Photographs, 1993, 1995

Series I. “A Golden Century: One Hundred Years of LSU Football.” 1993

This series consists of photographs commemorating the 100th anniversary of LSU football in 1993. Images include players such as Billy Cannon, Charles Alexander, Lora Hinton, Abe Mickal, Gaynell Tinsley, George “Doc” Fenton, Bert Jones, Tommy Casanova, and other key players. Images of coaches

This series consists of photographs from an exhibit on the life of former LSU president Troy H. Middleton.

This subgroup consists of photograph albums containing images of the downtown campus prepared by the University as promotional tools. Included are images of the interior and exterior of buildings, campus grounds, classes, athletics, faculty members, the bands, and other images depicting life on campus.
