Chapter 2 Introduction to Classical Propositional
CHAPTER 2 INTRODUCTION TO CLASSICAL PROPOSITIONAL LOGIC 1 Motivation and History The origins of the classical propositional logic, classical propositional calculus, as it was, and still often is called, go back to antiquity and are due to Stoic school of philosophy (3rd century B.C.), whose most eminent representative was Chryssipus. But the real development of this calculus began only in the mid-19th century and was initiated by the research done by the English math- ematician G. Boole, who is sometimes regarded as the founder of mathematical logic. The classical propositional calculus was ¯rst formulated as a formal ax- iomatic system by the eminent German logician G. Frege in 1879. The assumption underlying the formalization of classical propositional calculus are the following. Logical sentences We deal only with sentences that can always be evaluated as true or false. Such sentences are called logical sentences or proposi- tions. Hence the name propositional logic. A statement: 2 + 2 = 4 is a proposition as we assume that it is a well known and agreed upon truth. A statement: 2 + 2 = 5 is also a proposition (false. A statement:] I am pretty is modeled, if needed as a logical sentence (proposi- tion). We assume that it is false, or true. A statement: 2 + n = 5 is not a proposition; it might be true for some n, for example n=3, false for other n, for example n= 2, and moreover, we don't know what n is. We introduce the basic concepts needed to understand how writing systems and character encodings function, and how they work together. The intersection of the Unicode Standard and the International Phonetic Al- phabet is often not met without frustration by users. Mathematical expressions can be typed online in a number of ways including plain text, ASCII codes, HTML tags, or using an equation editor (see Writing Mathematical Notation Online for overview). If the application in which you are working does not have an equation editor built in, then a common option is to write expressions horizontally in plain text. In doing so you have to format the expressions very carefully using appropriately placed parentheses and accurate notation. This document provides examples and important cautions for writing mathematical expressions in plain text. Section 1. How to Write Exponents Just as on a graphing calculator, when writing in plain text the caret key ^ (above the 6 on a qwerty keyboard) means that an exponent follows. For example x2 would be written as x^2. Example 1a. 4xy23 would be written as 4 x^2 y^3 or with the multiplication mark as 4*x^2*y^3. Example 1b. With more than one item in the exponent you must enclose the entire exponent in parentheses to indicate exactly what is in the power. x2n must be written as x^(2n) and NOT as x^2n. Writing x^2n means xn2 . Example 1c. When using the quotient rule of exponents you often have to perform subtraction within an exponent. In such cases you must enclose the entire exponent in parentheses to indicate exactly what is in the power. x5 The middle step of ==xx52− 3 must be written as x^(5-2) and NOT as x^5-2 which means x5 − 2 . -

The advantage of these notations is that they do not require parentheses to control the order of operations in an expression. The advantage of this in a computer is that parsing a RPN expression is trivial, whereas parsing an expression in standard notation can take quite a bit of computation. At the most basic level, an expression such as 1 + 2 becomes 12+. For more complicated expressions, the concept of a stack must be introduced. The stack is just the list of all numbers which have not been used yet. When an operation takes place, the result of that operation is left on the stack. Thus, we could write the sum of all integers from 1 to 10 as either, 12+3+4+5+6+7+8+9+10+ or 12345678910+++++++++ In both cases the result 55 is left on the stack. -
