ABSTRAKT: Práce předkládá historii a vývoj sportovních staveb pro olympijské hry od starověku až po současnost. Podrobně se zabývá technickými, ekonomickými a společenskými vlivy ovlivňujícími výslednou architektonickou formu a možnosti jejího následného využití. Detailní popis jednotlivých ročníků olympijských her a následný teoretický rozbor ukazují jakým způsobem je výstavba velkých sportovních zařízení a navazující infrastruktury prostředkem k demonstraci ekonomické síly a technologické vyspělosti organizátorů. Pořadatelství vrcholné sportovní akce vytváří rozvojové příležitosti a může být katalyzátorem řešení společenských, ekonomických a urbanistických problémů. Výsledkem jsou inovativní a pokroková řešení, která mohou být posléze aplikována v menším měřítku i na realizacích lokálního významu. Příliš ambiciózní projekty však někdy vedou k nezvládnutí investičních nákladů na výstavbu velkých komplexů, které se pak stávají dlouhodobě nevyužívané a jejich provoz trvale neudržitelný. ABSTRACT: This work presents history and evolution of sporting venues for olympic games from ancient Greece to present days. Main focus is on technical, economical and social aspects influencing architectural form and possibilities of follow up usage. Detailed description of individual cases of olympic games followed by a theoretical analysis show the way how the construction of major sport venues and related infrastructure is used by organizers as a mean of demonstration of economic power and technical excellence. Organization of mega sport events creates development opportunities and can act as a catalyst in solving social, economic and urban issues. As an outcome of hosting such an event there are inovative solutions that can be aftewards applied in smaller scale in local conditions. However too ambitious projects sometimes lead to unmanagable cost expenses for huge complexes that quickly become unusable and their operation unsustainable in long tems.     GOVERNANCE OF SUSTAINABLE EVENT-LED REGENERATION: THE CASE OF LONDON 2012 OLYMPICS A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy by Hayriye Özlem Edizel School of Engineering and Design Brunel University April 2014 ABSTRACT This study aims to understand the interface between the governance of event-led regeneration and sustainable development by taking the London 2012 Olympic Games/Lower Lee Valley area regeneration process as a case study. Since the early 1990s, there is a widespread trend towards the use of mega-events to promote a city, stimulate the local economy and regenerate rundown post-industrial areas and communities. The importance of mega-events in destination development has gained increasing attention and they are also considered as a catalyst for city regeneration. The emphasis in the aims of event-led regeneration has changed over the time and the sustainability in terms of economic, physical, social and governance dimensions has gained significant attention from both organisers and researchers. In the context of sustainable event-led regeneration, multiple stakeholder perspectives are essential and it is important to know how different actors are involved and interact in an event-led regeneration. London used 2012 Olympics to regenerate East London, one of the most deprived parts of the city. It is taken as an opportunity to explore new frontiers of interaction and cooperation between the local, regional and national stakeholders. This research adopts an integrative approach, which evaluates the changes in the built environment, social structure and stakeholder organisation together to evaluate the sustainability of the event-led regeneration governance. Data collection methods include interviews with stakeholders of London 2012 planning and organization, focus group meetings with residents living in and around the fringe of the London 2012 Olympic Park, secondary data analysis and document analysis.
