FROM OUR PARISH PHOTO DIRECTORY

Dear Parishioners,

What a joy it has been to be your pastor the past 3 years! At the same time, I am keenly aware that I am building on the work of my predecessors: Fr Gerald and Fr Terry; who combined had over 20 years at the parish! As a new pastor, I am in love with everything about Old St. Pat’s and certain that God led me to this particular parish for a reason. What is it that makes our parish unique? Perhaps you are not aware, but like other parishes, we have a certain “reputation.” The word on the street is that Old St. Patrick’s is the most traditional and conservative of parishes around, and that we have Latin in our liturgies! But does that adequately define who we really are? I, for one, think there are many more facets to who we are. For that Father Tom reason, the parish council has been working very hard to craft Wasilewski a Parish Vision: who we think we are and who we’d like to become in Christ!

The vision reads: “Old St. Patrick's parish, relying on the guidance of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, strives for holiness of life, the nourishment of family life, and to joyfully live and share the Gospel. We foster the love

of beauty, liturgy, Catholic tradition, prayer and the sacramental life. The parish promotes education in the Faith, obedience to the Magisterium, and an authentic renewal of Catholic culture.”

Many hours were spent in coming up with this concise vision! Council members used techniques from a leadership program called Good Leaders Good Shepherds to guide our work. First, we engaged in “visualization", what could we be if we could not fail? Members had great suggestions: build an adoration chapel, weight gym for teens, more devotions. Then we drew up “characteristics” (nouns) and “methods” (verbs) to help us narrow and write the vision itself. There was much discussion, some hand wringing, and one particular- ly long council meeting! What you see above is what we believe is most important to us and what we want to foster and encourage at the parish. When I look at this vision statement, I see how we are unique: what other parish has so many large with children who faithfully live the faith? Catholic family life is important to us! What about love of beauty as it is expressed in liturgy? That is after all what we are looking for in the use of Latin, chant, the priest facing East, and the older forms of the Rites. How about fostering an authentic Catholic culture? We do that at Old St. Pat’s through our homeschool community, our celebrations of St. Patrick’s feastday, processions, and informally when young parish families meet together outside of church to celebrate or engage in sports! A new Catholic culture is being fostered at Old St. Pat’s that you won’t find just anywhere. Family life, beauty in liturgy, Catholic life and culture, sounds better han some general label others may want to put on us. We’re not so much “traditional” and “conservative” as we are authentically Catholic and fully alive in the Faith! We have a beautiful future and an opportunity to follow Jesus in this unique way and be a light to others who do not know the Lord. May God bless all our efforts and prayers! Enjoy the photo directory!

Classical Homeschool Enrichment Program

An Invitation to St. Augustine’s HEP Informational Meetings after Masses next Sunday, February 16th, 2020

After both the 8:00 and 10:30 Masses on Donut Sunday, February 16th, there will be an informational conversation about St. Augustine’s Homeschool Enrichment Program with Dr. and Mrs. Russell and others from the St. Augustine HEP community in the Parish Hall.

St. Augustine’s is the oldest classical homeschool enrichment program in Ann Arbor, with highly trained and qualified instructors, wonderful families and a caring community of students. For fifteen years, St. Augustine’s has proudly partnered with Old St. Patrick’s Parish, providing the best of the modern home school combined with the tradition of Catholic liberal arts education from kindergarten through high school.

We begin by forming the imagination to love and pursue the good, the true, and the beautiful, through immersion in the Catholic Western tradition at the youngest ages. Our program pro- ceeds to teach the analytic skills and the ability to give form to the students’ learning through history, literature, philosophy, and theology. Mathematics, science, logic, classical languages, drama, and music complete our formation—with two beautiful Sacred Concerts and two full Shakespeare plays in this area each year.

Our subjects have developed over at least five thousand years as the greatest minds in history attempt to answer the greatest questions of life: what is man’s relationship to God, to his fellow humans, and to the world in which he is placed? Our tutors, deeply educated in the rich heritage of Catholic truths and culture, help the student to form a richer picture of God’s world, deepen- ing each year as they move onward toward graduation, well-prepared to succeed in any college.

Our graduates attend undergraduate and graduate schools internationally. They have been awarded multiple Presidential Scholarships at Benedictine College (2015, 2017, 2019), full-ride college scholarships at University of Michigan (2015), and even been Valedictorian at Hillsdale College (2017). Our program has three locations, at Old St. Patrick Church in Ann Arbor, St. Joseph Church in South Lyon, and St. Anthony Church in Temperance.

Come to the Parish Hall for Donut Sunday after Mass next week to learn more about a classical liberal arts education for your children!

Survey Opens This Week

Old St. Patrick will be participating in a parish survey about discipleship conducted by the Catholic Leadership Institute! The Institute will conduct surveys at all parishes in the Diocese of Lansing.

Go to: disciplemakerindex.com Paper copies of the survey will be available in the back of church.

The survey will only be available from Feb. 8-March 1 and will ask you to reflect on your own spiritual growth and enable you to provide feedback on our parish’s efforts to help you grow. All responses will be confidential. This information will be invaluable to Fr. Tom and our various ministries as we plan for the future and strive to be the best disciples we can be.
