By Amy Fleming Staff Writer esidents of Sanibel's Clam Bayou area remember being able to take a boat from Ritheir dock to the Gulf of Mexico, gliding through the salt water past acres of green mangrove trees. They remember manatees swimming into the sheltered waters to give birth, and great schools of fish attracting a variety of birds. All of that has changed now. Clam Bayou is located near the westernmost tip of Sanibel on the Gulf side, and is comprised of three arms of water, lined with more than 14 miles of mangroves along the shoreline. Twelve of those Dawn deBoer photos 14 miles are owned by Lee County and the City of Mangroves killed by impounded water line the shore. Sanibel, while the other two are on private proper- ty. Under normal conditions, the bayou is open to the Gulf with a tidal volume of some 50 million gal- lons ebbing and flowing on a daily basis. However, Clam Bayou closed in 1996, due primarily to beach renourishment projects. It has since been opened for very brief periods of time after a heavy storm, or by manual dredging operations. The effect of this clos- ing has had impacts beyond curtailing recreational boating — it is slowly strangling the Clam Bayou ecosystem, and by extension, the Blind Pass Eco- Zone, of which it is an integral part. At present, Clam Bayou is about 150 acres of impounded salt water, with rainfall as the only influx of water.
