Save the Children Earthquake Response Situation Report #13 December 13, 2005

I. Overview/Highlights • Post-distribution monitoring in Langpura Union Council, Muzaffarabad, has shown that the 310 families provided with shelter kits are managing to recover timber and other materials from their former houses and construct shelters. The community feedback on shelter kits was very positive. • Livelihood activities have started to scale up in Meira camp, with woman from Allai being trained to make blankets and shalwar kameez and men involved in clearing roads. • UN shelter assessment for earthquake-affected areas under 5,000 ft was conducted between November 30 and December 1. Save the Children’s strategic focus remains on provision of shelter, prioritizing those living at higher altitudes.

II. Response Protection There are now a total of 44 safe play areas in earthquake-affected areas.

• This week two new safe play areas were set up in Bagh, complete with play boxes, fencing, carpets and cushions. Training was conducted for 24 Safe Play Area Supervisors. W omen were engaged in group work activities on the importance and benefits of play, participation and expression of feelings among children. • In Muzafferabad, one new play area was set up and spaces for three more were identified. One Safe Play Area closed because the population moved. • In Mansehra, seven additional safe play areas were established. Seven male and three female community child protection groups were also formed. • Save the Children established three additional safe play spaces in Batagram. • The first three safe play spaces were established in Bana Allai.

Training on psychosocial support to children has been organized for NGO staff. The training will be held at the Save the Children Training Unit at Abbottabad on the 14-15 December 2005.

Education In Muzafferabad, seven kits for school site clearance were distributed. Six sites were cleared and nine payments made to the community following site clearance. Three school tents (18x6) have been erected to date in and around Bagh town. Education activities at the school constructed at Jabbar have started. 40 children are attending the school.

In Batagram, nine tented temporary learning spaces have been established, benefiting 943 students. This week, three new temporary learning spaces were established, one each in Government Girls Primary School at , Sanda Seri Qasim Khan and Tikri Mera.

Three communities (Balimong, Malkan and Sharkolai) in high-altitude areas of district Mansehra have agreed to provide land for school buildings, to be constructed next week.

Health A 15-bed tent hospital, donated by AmeriCares, is up and functioning. Two babies were delivered in the hospital last week. Save the Children has prioritized re-establishment of three destroyed Basic Health Units in Allai and will start work to immediately re-establish them.

Shelter, NFIs and Food Update Save the Children has received a donation of 20 winterized tents from the Swedish Army. Save the Children’s W FP food distribution has been reduced from 187,000 beneficiaries in five tehsils to 13,555 beneficiary families in two tehsils, Allai and Kala Dhaka in NW FP. This W FP change is in line with the governments plan to continue pre-earthquake wheat distribution in the lower lying and easier to reach tehsils.

M ansehra In Mansehra, 406 shelter kits were distributed this week along with 1,468 children’s jackets, 1,468 woolen caps, 1,468 pairs of socks and 198 pairs of shoes. Monitoring has shown that 40% of the shelter kits distributed in Mansehra so far have been used to complete shelters. Save the Children made assessment visits to 10 far-flung villages.

Kala Dhaka Tehsil 600 families each received one tent and one household kit, which includes 5 blankets/quilts or sleeping bags.

Allai Tehsil Cumulatively, 3699 families have received W FP food, 5,994 shelter kits and 5,907 household kits have been distributed, benefiting 6,909 different households. Almost half of the Allai families targeted have received their shelter assistance.

Bagh This week, 7288 CGI sheets, 601 shelter kits, 477 sets of children’s clothing, 203 plastic sheets and 198 jerry cans were distributed. In Bagh, Save the Children is expanding the distribution team, and arranging, with IOM, the use of five 5 free trucks as needed to increase registration and distribution in high risk areas and to meet December targets.

M uzzafarabad This week, 1,559 shelter kits, 1,920 family kits and 1,228 jerry cans were distributed. 1,538 families were registered for receipt of relief goods. Assessment and distribution has been going on simultaneously. Enlargement of the team has increased the field capacity to carry out the relief activities.

Livelihoods • Save the Children purchased 10 sewing machines for Meira camp with another 25 are on order. Two trained seamstresses from the camp are training women to sew. They will be involved in cash for work programs, sewing quilts from recycled clothing and making school uniforms • Thirty laborers worked on clearing and building a road to open access to phase three of Meira camp
