Ginger Jones / RIvervue At the Kalamazoo cluster, Penny, BISS GCHB Aruzia Joyous Pennyroyal at Rivervue, earned a Best of Breed in Specialty, Group 1, two BOB, one BOS and a SEL Bitch picking up an impressive number of Grand Championship points over very competitive specials competition. Penny then quickly blew all her coat and she and the rest of the gang took the summer off for a well-deserved break. Back in the show ring the weekend of September 28/29 at the Monroe Kennel Club shows, Penny earned BOB both days under judges Eddie Dziuk and Kim Ramey-LeBlanc earning another 9 points towards her Silver Grand Championship. She is now just a few points away from completing the Silver requirements.

While Penny spent the summer growing her coat back, Spencer, CH Rivervue Gimmie Some Lovin, went to the Toledo Kennel Club show on Sunday June 2nd and for his first time out as a special, earned BOB under judge Elliott Weiss and a Group 2 under judge Shelley Hennessy. Spencer's next show out was at the Sturgis Kennel Club show where he earned a BOS under judge Nathaniel Horn on Sunday, August 3rd. Spencer's next show was on Saturday, September 14th at the St. Clair Kennel Club show in Goodells, MI, where he won an impressive BOB award under judge Gloria Geringer and then went on to win the hound group under borzoi breeder judge Dr. John Reeve-Newson. While getting our photos taken, he turned to me and said that in all his years of judging, this was the very first borzoi he ever awarded the hound group to. I was absolutely stunned and overwhelmed with such an impressive win over heavily campaigned hound competition, such an exciting win for my homebred boy! How unfortunate that I was not able to show on Sunday due to family commitments as he was the breed judge for that day.

I have plans for a late fall breeding, if everything goes well, of CH Rivervue Gimmie Some Lovin to my lovely Hound Group winning Swedish Import bitch, GCH Borscana Akka Tierra, Birdie. Keeping fingers and toes crossed that it takes and all goes well.

Looking forward to the big Kalamazoo Cluster weekend in early November and seeing everyone then. Wishing everyone a very Happy Thanksgiving with their family and loved ones. Savoring the fall season before the daylight hours and the sunshine disappear and we succumb to the long cold dark days of winter coming much, much too soon

(member news continued) Cindy and Mike Michalak / Bon-Ton We attended the Lexington Cluster held in early September for three of the five days, not wanting to wear out the dogs being away from home so long. We had our RV so it made it a bit more comfortable and homey for the dogs. It’s easier on us too since we don’t have to walk the them to potty by just letting them in and out of the RV having 4 exercise pens setup. Besides that; they prefer my cooking to eating out.

I (Cindy) haven’t shown our little 2 year old girl, SVershin’s Zsa Zsa Galore Bon-Ton BCAT very often due to waiting for her to grow coat. Zsa Zsa only needed a major. Hoping Lexington would have majors, we entered her. She won a major the first day we entered, which was Saturday. We were quite lucky to accomplish that because it was the only day a major was available. There were 5 other very lovely bitches for us to have to defeat, but Zsa Zsa strutted her stuff and moved like a pro receiving her final major to become a new Champion.

On the final day we had a great ending to Zydeco’s show career! Our lovely boy completed his GOLD Grand Champion title in style. GCHG Lagniappe Cajun Zydeco Bon-Ton BCAT defeated a Borzoi currently in the Top 5 out of Texas with a well known handler for Best of Breed under Joseph Gregory. What was very special to us is that 2 days prior, Joseph Gregory judged the Hound Group and had given that dog from Texas Group 1. I never dreamed he would select Zydeco for Breed after that. However, I got the feeling by the way Mr. Gregory was eyeing-up Zydeco as he gaited around the ring he may actually win and he did, giving us that final 4 points for Gold. We almost didn’t stay for Owner Handled Group being it was scheduled the last group on the last day of the shows and with a 4 hours drive home on a Holiday; it was tempting to just leave. Mike and I discussed it and decided what was another 3 hours to wait and boy we were glad we did! Mr. Gregory gave us OHG 1. A week later Zydeco won an OHG 2 under Nancy Simmons in Chattanooga. My Zydeco has been exclusively handled by me thru all of his Grand titles.

I’m having rotator cuff surgery on Oct. 17 so will be out of the show scene for awhile. I’m hoping to eventually get back out there and finish our homebred singleton, Bon-Ton’s Lagniappe Zaktarulon BCAT, who needs one major and a couple singles to finish. He is beginning to fill out that tall 34” body and growing hair, so we hope to have good news by next year. We may get the urge to toss Zydeco in a show or two since he’s only 5 years old, but he’s looking forward to retirement too.

Amy Balthrop / Akanni Akanni borzoi have had a really fun summer. We started with co-owning a lovely boy with our puppy owner in Alaska. Nox (Coburn's Midnight Fire) is from Pat Shaw from her Rider X Maiden breeding, and in the few months he was here in Michigan he won a Puppy Sweepstakes Group 2, and six points (including a major under sighthound specialist Michael Canalizo) towards his AKC CH.

Our boy Bacon (Akanni's Gryllus on Aeaea, CGC) went to a fantastic retirement home in Wisconsin with long time Borzoi fancier, Jill Pelisek, and it couldn't be a better fit for either of them!

Our lovely girl Serenity (Howff Carbonel Firefly at Akanni) took WB/BOW/BOS both days at the Genessee Co. Kennel Club shows and now has both her majors and a total of nine points to her AKC CH.

The most fun surprise this summer was when our Satine (Akanni's Spectacular Spectacular) took WB/BOW/BOB under Borzoi Specialist Del Richards at the Berrien Co. Kennel Club show over lovely class animals and a very successful Special. Satine went on to be given Group Four in the Hound Group that day, also by Del Richards! She is our third bred- by girl to have gotten a group placement from the classes and she did this the day before she turned ONE year old! She also has successfully been certed to run in her first lure coursing trials so we're really looking forward to having fun with this little pistol. We're likely going to start her sister, Elphaba (Akanni's Defying Gravity) in the show ring this winter.

Rich and June Mintchell / Riju Scent Work news from us here, Borzoi Keeper finished his master container and master exteriors titles. In masters there is an unknown number of hides. The dog has to find all of them with no incorrect alerts in the allotted time. Keeper is now Del Sol Riju Keeper Of The Flame JC, BN, SWA, SCM, SIM, SEM, SHDN.

Bayla - FC Starswift Teine FV Vixen RA MC FCH finished her MC title at the BCOA Nationals and finished her Rally Advance title in July. Arlo - DC Teine Runtuff Set The World On Fire SC finished his Conformation Championship title with 4 majors after receiving Winners Dog at the MBC supported entry at Cudahy Kennel Club show in Franksville, Wisconsin making him a new Dual Champion. Arlo has finished his required health testing and received his OFA CHIC #.

Jon and Nancy Reimer / Windrift

Ender (GCH Windrift All in the Game JC) completed his grand championship with a nice BOB win at Waukesha, just in time to see his first litter born the end of August. Dory (Ch Windrift Light My Fire JC, SC) finished her championship the same weekend and now will be going AKC coursing where she has (8 points, l major).

Since then we have been home with puppies. Twelve of them!!! Born August 30, the 3 boys and 9 girls are white with sable spots. Dam is GCH Kirov Windrift Twilight Glow JC (GCH DC Windrift Tahoe Chances Are SC FCH ROM-C and GCH Kirov Pulsatilla ROM-C). Sire is GCH Windrift All In The Game JC (GCH Windrift Wild Accusation JC and GCH WIndrift Incantation). Pictures and pedigree on our website windriftborzoi.com

We want to congratulate Steve and KC Artley on finishing George’s championship (Ch Windrift Longshot at Tahoe) and Gwen’s grand championship (GCH Windrift Like the Odds at Tahoe JC, SC).

Also congratulations to Corissa Fanning on the tremendous successes with her Buzz (GCH Windrift Wild Accusations JC) and Ushara (GCH Phaedra Ushara) puppies. They have been fantastic!! Her male Arlo (Dunroving Arlo Guthrie) has 8 points, 2 majors and her female Addie (Dunroving Adventure Awaits) has 10 points, 3 majors. All of this by 9 months of age!!

Our self-tri girl, Dawn, finished her Conformation Championship with 3 majors. DC Kirov Windrift Fly Above Tahoe JC SC RN CGCA CGCU FCH, also finished her ASFA Field Championship. In AKC coursing, Ace (Kirov Windrift Flying Ace O’Tahoe JC SC RN CGCA CGCU FCH) and Joe, each got 2 more Master Courses legs (need 25), and Joe got his first LCX point. Joe earned his Rally Intermediate title in 3 trials, and is now GCH DC Hemlock Hollow Aruzia Journey To Tahoe JC SC RI BN CGC FCH. Joe’s niece, DesertWinds Aruzia Fun With Tahoe’s Skye went to her first show at 9 months of age and won 2 points over 4 adult pointed bitches, handled by Steve. Steve handled George, CH Windrift Longshot At Tahoe to his title, and first time out as a special, won Select Dog over 2 male specials and a 5 point major. Littermate Gwen earned her GCH with 6 majors and 5 wins over specials, handled by KC.

September 21, 2019 MBC picnic at the Lima Ohio kennel club show grounds. It has been a long time since we have held a casual event. The weather was nice. We had six non-MBC members join the fun. Though the grounds are not big enough for a coursing trial, there was enough space to safely hold a practice. 22 borzoi tried lure coursing. 24 people stayed for the pot luck lunch, held in the air conditioned fully equipped kitchen. 16 borzoi were shown at the fun match. Our judge was Grace Conally whose Vala Rama borzoi did a lot of winning in the 1950s-70s . Pictured is Grace with the Best In Match winner Frank Zajac and “Basie“. Plans are under way to find a location in Illinois to hold a picnic, coursing practice and conformation match next year. (more pictures on the MBC website)
