ENTRY POINT NORTH BELGIUM - ATS ACADEMY 13x LIVING IN BRUSSELS PRACTICALITIES Currency exchange, money transfer and banks Most restaurants, bars and shops accept credit cards (Master, VISA, American Express, etc.), but it is recommended to always have cash with you as well. The currency used in Belgium is the Euro (€).

ATMs are easy to find in Brussels and there are many options for exchanging cash as well. Most often, currency exchange kiosks are located in touristic areas and at the airport. Currency exchange is also available at banks at a surcharge.

Mobile phone number You can buy a Belgian SIM card in shops of the Belgian phone providers such as Base, Orange and Proximus. You can buy a prepaid card at almost every petrol station in the country.

Tipping culture Tipping is not common in Belgium. Bills from for example restaurants, taxis and hairdressers include the service charge. However, if you are very happy with the service you got, leaving a few Euros (or round up the bill) as a tip is the way forward, but think of 10% as the maximum to give. In some of the touristic places in Brussels, you may find that the staff “expect” you to tip more. You are under no obligation to give a tip, or to tip more.

LOCAL TRANSPORT Subway system The Brussels Metro is a fast transit system serving a large part of Brussels. It consists of four conventional metro lines and three tramways. Information regarding timetables, prices, etc. can be found online. www.stib-mivb.be

On public holidays and during weekends the public transport services operate on a different schedule than on weekdays, so it is best to check the timetables before your departure.
