BFAR 8 regional director Juan Albaladejo said the phenomenon is expected because of the mild El Niño experienced in Eastern Visayas this year. “This event coupled with the unusu- al weather patterns we are experiencing in the region this year are the contributing factors to the upsurge of red tide events in our bays,” he explained. To date, 6 bays covering 5 munici- palities and 2 cities are affected by red tide: Cancabato Bay (Tacloban City), San Pedro Bay (Basey and Marabut, Samar) Maqueda Bay (Jiabong, Sa- mar), Silanga Bay (Catbalogan City, Samar), Irong-irong Bay (Catbalogan City, Samar), and Cambatutay Bay (Tarangnan, Samar). The official also disclosed that Eastern Visayas has the most number of bays in the country being monitored for PSP, with almost half of the 34 bays surrounding the region. He added that as early as March, they were already expecting the red tide events to occur. For red tide occurrence to happen, he said the following contributing fac- tors must be present: long dry out peri- od; warm water temperature; increased water salinity; and episodic rainfall event that causes runoff to the sea. “When these events occur, red tide organisms remain in the sediments as cyst, and will bloom when this series of event occur in unison. I am hoping that continuous rain event will happen near the shore to dilute the salinity, and lower the water temperature in order to trigger a collapse of the red tide bloom,” Albaladejo explained.
