NBA National Basketball Association Creation ● It was founded in 1946 as the Basketball Association of America (BAA), and adopted the name of NBA in 1949 after merging with the National Basketball League (NBL). ● In 1967 the American Basketball Association (ABA) is created, threatening the NBA popularity. Both leagues fight through the years, trying to sign the best players in the country to increase their popularity. ● In 1976 occurs the merger between the ABA and NBA, resulting in a league with 22 franchises. Today ● The league has 30 franchises, divided in 2 conferences: Eastern and Western. ● The regular season occurs between October and April. Twenty-eight years ago Golden and Wasil (1987) presented the use of the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) for ranking outstanding sports records. Since then much has changed with respect to sports and sports records, the application and theory of the AHP, and the availability of the internet for accessing data. In this paper we revisit the ranking of outstanding sports records and build on past work, focusing on a comprehensive set of records from the four major American professional sports. We interviewed and corresponded with two sports experts and applied an AHP-based approach that features both the traditional pairwise comparison and the AHP rating method to elicit the necessary judgments from these experts. The most outstanding sports records are presented, discussed and compared to Golden and Wasil’s results from a quarter century earlier. Vipers' Head Coach Resigns Meet
Vipers’ Head Coach Resigns Larry Brown resigns from his position due to medical issues Florence, SC – February 12, 2014 – The Pee Dee Vipers’ Head Coach, Larry Brown, has resigned from his position as a consequence of medical concerns and precautions. Brown and the Vipers took into consideration the long-term health of Brown and productivity of the team when making this decision. Brown does not feel that he can adequately provide the Vipers with the standard of coaching he is accustom to contributing and focus on improving his health at the same time. The entire Vipers Organization backs Brown in his decision and will continue to support him during his journey to good health. Andre Bovain has been named Head Coach. Bovain served as the Vipers’ Assistant Coach under Brown. NBA legend and Columbia, SC native, Xavier McDaniel will be one of the Vipers’ assistant coaches. Bryan Hergenroether will also join the Vipers’ coaching staff. The Vipers’ new coaching staff will leave much of what Brown has developed in place; plays and structure will be similar. Brown and Bovain worked closely to ensure that the coaching transition will be smooth and not dramatically impact the team’s winning style of play. Renormalizing individual performance metrics for cultural heritage management of sports records Alexander M. (Dated: April 21, 2020) Individual performance metrics are commonly used to compare players from different eras. However, such cross-era comparison is often biased due to signiﬁcant changes in success factors underlying player achievement rates (e.g. performance enhancing drugs and modern training regimens). Such historical comparison is more than fodder for casual discussion among sports fans, as it is also an issue of critical importance to the multi- billion dollar professional sport industry and the institutions (e.g. Hall of Fame) charged with preserving sports history and the legacy of outstanding players and achievements. To address this cultural heritage management issue, we report an objective statistical method for renormalizing career achievement metrics, one that is par- ticularly tailored for common seasonal performance metrics, which are often aggregated into summary career metrics – despite the fact that many player careers span different eras. Remarkably, we ﬁnd that the method applied to comprehensive Major League Baseball and National Basketball Association player data preserves the overall functional form of the distribution of career achievement, both at the season and career level. As such, subsequent re-ranking of the top-50 all-time records in MLB and the NBA using renormalized metrics indicates reordering at the local rank level, as opposed to bulk reordering by era.

With 7 foreign-born players, the Spurs led the NBA with the most foreign-born players on their roster. Tony Parker (France), Boris Diaw (France) and Manu Ginobili (Argentina) played alongside Tim Duncan (U.S. Virgin Islands) and Kawhi Leonard (U.S.) to bring the team its 5th NBA championship since 1999. The San Antonio Spurs are part of a larger trend of globalization in the NBA. In the 2013-14 season, the National Basketball Association (NBA) set a record with 90 international players, representing 20 percent of the players on the opening-night NBA rosters, compared to 21 international players (and 5 percent of rosters) in 1992. Professional baseball started blending foreign-born players with native-born talent earlier than the NBA. On the 2014 Major League Baseball (MLB) opening-day roster there were 213 foreign-born players, representing 25 percent of the total, an increase of 2 percentage points from an NFAP analysis of MLB rosters performed in 2006. Leading foreign-born baseball players include 2013 American League MVP Miguel Cabrera, 2013 World Series MVP David Ortiz and Texas Rangers pitcher Yu Darvish. I was considering having the Vice President cover these remarks so I could stay fresh for the State of the Union. [Laughter] Taking an example off Pop, who sits his stars sometimes—[laughter]— but I decided I actually wanted to meet them. So I know we've got a lot of Spurs fans in the house—no doubt—including a guy I stole from San Antonio, our Secretary of Housing and Urban Development, former Mayor Julián Castro. [Applause] Hey! And of course we want to welcome General Manager R.C. Buford and, of course, Coach Popovich. I want the coach to know that he is not contractually obligated to take questions after the first quarter of my remarks. [Laughter] Now, look, I admit it, I'm a Bulls fan. It's never easy celebrating a non-Bulls team in the White House. [Laughter] That's all I've been able to do—[laughter]—so far. But even I have to admit that the Spurs are hard to dislike.
