And it keeps changing daily even hourly. Oh, sure, we feel kind of insulated against the world out here in the country, Out Back but we have to talk about the “elephant in the room.” This thing is all around us. Carolyn Plotts Sunday night we went to a prayer meeting at our church. One of the songs we sang contained a phrase about how we are surrounded by the world (sin). The analagy of us, here in Kansas, came to my mind. Here we are, smack dab in the middle of the United States, surrounded by states in all directions. The song went on to say we are also surrounded by God’s love for us. Sure, some people will say, “How could God love us if he let’s this horrible virus infect the world?” The answer, in my mind, is pretty simple. We live in a fallen world. God gave us free will and over time bad choices lead to bad things. God doesn’t make bad things happen, but he does allow them. What I took away from our prayer meeting was, even in the midst of this un- certainity, God is still in control. We cannot live our lives in fear. We are to be vigilant, of course. We are to take precautions, but not quit living our lives. In fact, we as Christians, are to set the example. Continue to help our brothers and sisters as best we can; make sure our neighbors are cared for; pray for healing; and calmer heads. I didn’t believe that panic-buying would ever affect us out here. But, I was wrong. We needed feed for the horses, potatoes, milk and yes, toilet paper. We were down to three rolls and it was at the top of the list. Jim does the bulk of our grocery shopping any more and he headed to Oberlin for his purchases only to find the shelves devoid of even the cheap one-ply toilet paper. This led him to broaden the search and drive on to McCook. First, he went to Gary’s Grocery Store, the former Schmick’s Market. Same story. Next, it was Wal-Mart. A repeat. Jim started to get nervous. He did not want to come back empty handed. In a last-ditch attempt to score some TP, he headed back to Gary’s and was pleading with an employee to please check to see if there was any in the back room when another employee motioned him aside. “Come with me,” said the employee, “I knew something like this would happen, so I saved some back for Is it still winter? people like you who just want one package.” It’s not a two-week supply, but hopefully by then, the hysteria will have calmed The calendar tells me it is still win- come numb, and spring, which tempts down and production can keep up with demand.
