ABSTRACT Title of Document: COMMUNICATING FEAR in FILM
ABSTRACT Title of Document: COMMUNICATING FEAR IN FILM MUSIC: A SOCIOPHOBIC ANALYSIS OF ZOMBIE FILM SOUNDTRACKS Pedro Gonzalez-Fernandez Master of Arts, 2014 Directed By: Dr. Patrick Warfield, Musicology The horror film soundtrack is a complex web of narratological, ethnographic, and semiological factors all related to the social tensions intimated by a film. This study examines four major periods in the zombie’s film career—the Voodoo zombie of the 1930s and 1940s, the invasion narratives of the late 1960s, the post-apocalyptic survivalist fantasies of the 1970s and 1980s, and the modern post-9/11 zombie—to track how certain musical sounds and styles are indexed with the content of zombie films. Two main musical threads link the individual films’ characterization of the zombie and the setting: Othering via different types of musical exoticism, and the use of sonic excess to pronounce sociophobic themes. The Couch and the Silver Screen, Chapter 5 – Psychoanalytic
The Couch and the Silver Screen The Couch and the Silver Screen is a collection of original contributions which explore European cinema from psychoanalytic perspectives. Both classic and contemporary films are presented and analysed by a variety of authors, including leading cinema historians and theorists, psychoanalysts with a specific expertise in the interpretation of films, as well as the filmmakers themselves. This com- posite approach offers a fascinating insight into the world of cinema. The Couch and the Silver Screen is illustrated with stills throughout and Andrea Sabbadini’s introduction provides a theoretical and historical context for the current state of psychoanalytic studies of films. The book is organized into four clear sections – Set and Stage,Working Through Trauma, Horror Perspectives and Documenting Internal Worlds – which form the basis for engaging chapters including: • Easily readable and jargon-free film reviews. • Essays on specific subjects such as perspectives on the horror film genre and adolescent development. • Transcripts of live debates among film directors, actors, critics and psycho- analysts. The cultural richness of the material presented, combined with the originality of multidisciplinary dialogues on European cinema, makes this book appealing not only to film buffs, but also to professionals, academics and students interested in the application of psychoanalytic ideas to the arts. Andrea Sabbadini is a psychoanalyst in private practice in London and a lecturer at UCL. He is founding editor of Psychoanalysis and History and book review editor of The International Journal of Psychoanalysis. He chairs the European Psychoanalytic Film Festival and a series of film events at the ICA. THE NEW LIBRARY OF PSYCHOANALYSIS General Editor Dana Birksted-Breen Advisory Board Catalina Bronstein, Sara Flanders, John Keene and Mary Target The New Library of Psychoanalysis was launched in 1987 in association with the Institute of Psycho-Analysis, London. -

Vermeer and Lucio Fulci's SETTE NOTE
Refractory » Subversive Frames: Vermeer And Lucio Fulci’s SETTE ... http://refractory.unimelb.edu.au/2010/07/18/subversive-frames-vermeer... a Journal of Entertainment Media (ISSN:1447-4905) Home » Latest Volume About Editorial Board Submissions State of Play Contact Subversive Frames: Vermeer And Lucio Fulci’s SETTE NOTE IN NERO – Alexandra Heller-Nicholas Published Jul 18th 2010 When paintings appear in the films of celebrated auteurs such as Peter Greenaway or Rainer Werner Fassbinder, critical debate tends to ask how, rather than if, the inclusion of these works impacts the broader meaning of the film as a whole. But despite the prevalence of painting in horror—from the clichéd moving-eyes-behind-the -portrait as typified in Hammer Horror’s Theatre of Death (Samuel Gallu, 1967), to Bernard Rose’s graffiti-laden Candyman (1992)—the same questions are not so readily addressed. Perhaps this is due to orthodox considerations of the horror film as a supposedly lowbrow cultural form, rendering art historical analysis a relatively impotent critical pursuit. Alternatively, maybe the hyperactive theatricality of this emphatically visceral body genre invites more well-trod approaches to critically privileged aspects: the repressed that keeps returning, the final girls and the phallic weaponry have all had more than a brief moment in the analytical spotlight. But the appearance of paintings in horror films—particularly recognisable and famous works—encourages readings outside of more popular critical approaches such as psychoanalysis. This article investigates the utility of Dutch Master Johannes Vermeer’s painting The Love Letter (1669-70) in cult Italian director Lucio Fulci’s giallo Sette note in nero (The Psychic, 1977), uncovering a complex relationship that is pivotal to the film thematically and stylistically. -

Dalla Slovacchia Evil di Peter Bebjak, sulla mortale avventura di alcuni amici che girano video su strani fenomeni paranormali; si prosegue con Inbred, produzione anglo tedesca di Alex Chandon, splatter movie con una buona dose di macabra ironia; The Last Will and Testament of Rosalind Leigh del canadese Rodrigo Gudiño porta sullo schermo una spettrale ed eterea Vanessa Redgrave; dalle Filippine il colorato mix di elementi horror, commedia romantica e genere “queer” di Zombadings 1: Remington and the Course of Zombadings del giovane Jared Castro. -
