NEWSPAPER - DO NOT DELAY WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 11, 2021 USPS 207 - 960 VOL. 116 NO. 5 FRANKENMUTH, MICHIGAN 48734 Street paving, fire station study okayed by City Council The Frankenmuth City Council, at its August 3 meeting, awarded a contract to Ace-Saginaw Paving for installation of thin mix overlay (asphalt) and striping within the city. The current fiscal year budget includes dollars for street construction, Frankenmuth City Manager Bridget Smith said. A total of $100,000 were budgeted in the Local Streets fund to overlay Meadow Lane, Frank, Mission Ridge and Clarmarc and $45,000 was also allocated in the Major Streets fund for overlay of North Franklin Street and Koester Drive. A pair of bids for the project were received, with Ace the low bid over Pyramid Paving at $91,270.52. Ace will do the work yet this year while Pyramid’s work would have taken place in the spring of 2022, which would also bring the risk of higher material costs. “Though the bid is under the total amount budgeted, the bid does not include the city expenses to prepare the streets for the project, such as street sweeping, barricading and other items,” Smith pointed out. A total of 994 tons of asphalt will be applied to these streets, with Koester Drive, North Franklin Street and Frank Road all getting new striping. In other city news, the Frankenmuth City-Township Commission, in collaboration with the Frankenmuth Fire Department, recently contracted with NSA Architecture of Farmington Hills with plans to address the long overdue need to renovate or replace the 70-year-old fire station at 210 West Genesee Street. Currently, the FFD has possession of most of the building, with the Frankenmuth Police Department on the west end of the building, now known as the Frankenmuth Public Safety Building. As part of the joint effort to ensure the FFD can continue to serve its 8,500 residents and two million visitors a year, the City- Township Commission underwent a competitive selection process whereby architectural firms possessing a demonstrated track record in the design of fire and police stations were invited to submit cost proposals. “Of the submissions received, it was decided that NSA Architecture offered the ‘best value’ to the City-Township Commission,” FFD Chief Phil Kerns said. “Beyond their extensive portfolio of fire stations and other related facilities, NSA Architecture has provided a wide array of design services for numerous, Michigan-based municipalities since the firm was founded in 1960.” As part of the initial study phase, NSA will conduct an in- depth evaluation and assessment of the existing fire station that, among other concerns, suffers from leaking roofs, utility failures, environmental issues, vehicle circulation constraints and numerous space shortcomings. The FFD has added additional trucks and equipment over the years and coupled with that, the engines have been getting larger in size. Beyond identifying deficiencies within the current facility, the focus of the study will be to establish the long-term physical and operational needs of the fire department, and perhaps the police department that may share space in the new facility. Once the physical requirements have been finalized, the architects will work with the City-Township Commission and FFD to develop preliminary designs and cost estimates for a new or renovated facility on the current site, or possibly an alternative site that is yet to be determined. In addition to meeting the operational requirements for current fire stations, designs for the new facility will be energy-efficient, low maintenance and showcase a uniquely Frankenmuth building character. The initial phase has been ongoing and slated to be complete on THE THIRD ANNUAL FRANKENMUTH FLOWER FESTIVAL . . . kicked off its 10-day run last weekend at Grandpa Tiny’s Farm. October 2021. Main Street, Frankenmuth MI 48734 • 989-652-6080 Frankenmuth News, August 11, 2021 - 13 ‘Fun in the Sun’ at Frankenmuth Flower Festival! The first weekend of the Frankenmuth Flower Festival drew a great number of people to Grandpa Tiny’s Farm. The third annual event began Friday morning and fest goers were greeted by sunny skies and warm temperatures that lasted throughout the first three days, mixed in with a little rain very early Sunday morning. While the sunflowers were the stars of the event, following the sun from sunrise to sunset, the family bonding time, 5K Sunflower Fun Color Run and Dinners in the Sunflowers” were some of the more popular items on Saturday. Even the new bar area inside the barn attracted persons after they took time to peruse the barns, the turn- of-the-20th century house, the iron trestle Black Bridge and Hart One-Room Schoolhouse. Wendy Winkel, who operates the farm and is the Flower Festival founder, was pleased with the opening weekend of the event. “Sunny skies brought out many smiling faces during the first weekend of the festival,” Winkel said. The 5K Fun Color Run began at 9am and drew a nearly 100 hundred participants who ran, jogged and walked the course – all on the farm property – past cornfields, pumpkin patches, over the trestle bridge and of course through the sunflowers. The untimed run/walk had about 7-8 stations where volunteers stood, ready to squirt or toss colored powder on their specially-made white t-shirts to enhance the hues. “We are not sure who had more fun, the racers or the race volunteers who got to peg them with the colored powder,” Winkel noted. At the end, each finisher received a ribbon with a medal and many stayed after the race for the “color” fight. Competitors grabbed cups of colored powder and splashed themselves, adding to the good time. The two Dinners in the Sunflowers were well received, with the first one sold out. Bordered by towering sunflowers and among apple, peach and plum trees, the diners enjoyed a five-course meal under large umbrellas. “The Dinners in the Sunflowers” went off without a hitch, with a special thank you to Chef Tyler Stark for creating master dinners for the guests on his birthday and to Gabbie Michael for beautifully playing her violin,” Winkel said. Stark is with the Bavarian Inn Restaurant and he and their staff handled the serving. Michael is a recent Frankenmuth High School graduate and is an accomplished musician as well as a proficient THE BAVARIAN INN RESTAURANT . . . prepared the two Dinners in the Sunflowers event at Grandpa Tiny’s Farm. The five-course distance runner. meal featured citrus herb grilled one-quarter chicken and Tuscan one-quarter chicken. Of course, many came to view, photograph and pick a sunflower to take home. Families and couples stood among the flowers to take “selfies” among the 20 acres of sunflowers. Craft vendors, lavender sales and food trucks also rounded out the experience. There is one more scheduled event, Yoga in the Sunflowers, with sessions at 10:30am and noon on Saturday, August 14. Participants are encouraged to bring their own mats to this event, free with admission to the festival. Heather Emmons from Sunflower Healing Studios from the Great Lakes Bay Region will be the instructor. Frankenmuth Flower Festival continues through Sunday, August 15. The gates open at 10am every day. The farm will close at 6pm Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday and at 8pm Friday and Saturday. For tickets, ticket costs and more information, please visit the Frankenmuth Flower Festival Facebook page or call (989-652- 5437).
