39 and Counting!

Our was officially established on July 13, 1980 when Bishop William Johnson appointed Father Hal Fumo to be the administrator. St. Timothy Parish was named thus by Bishop Johnson as he wanted to honor his dear friend and mentor, Cardinal Timothy Manning, of the Archdiocese of .

As we start into our 40th year then, it is time to consider how we might commemo- rate our 40th anniversary. I have already invited Bishop Vann to come for a Mass of Thanksgiving and await his response as to the date and time in July 2020.

So far, in meeting with our staff, we have designated the kickoff to our anniversary year to be the Hot August Nite on August 30th. This annual event is a thank you to the many women, men, and youth over 16 years of age who are involved in a ministry in our parish. We will close our anniversary year at next year’s Hot August Nite on August 28, 2020.

In between those dates, though…there could be a variety of ways to note not only the past, but to celebrate the present, and to look ahead to the future.

Do you have any ideas for us to consider? I would love to hear from you and so, if you do have any ideas, please email me at [email protected] and get as specific as you can! If you don’t use email, you may certainly contact me by mail. I would like to get your ideas by August 1st so planning can commence.

Lets’ come up with some creative, innovative, fun, and faith-filled ideas for this histor- ic event.

A Reflection on the Parable of... Think about this parable, Jesus’ beautiful response to the question “Who is my neighbor?” We all know the story, and it’s easy to identify with its four fictional characters: one victim, two bad guys and one good guy. But what if we take a further step and put flesh and bones on each of these men by im- agining them as real individual human beings full of conflicting thoughts and feelings like most of us?

We start with the victim. He is suffering a lot of pain and is terrified. He feels much anger and ha- tred toward the robbers and at the same time blames himself for his foolish arrogance in ignoring the advice of others. They had warned him not to travel this dangerous road alone and without a weap- on. He pleads to God for help. When two potential rescuers (holy men at that!) pass him by without stopping, he is close to despair.

Then there is the Priest. He is on an official and urgent mission, having been summoned by the fam- ily of a sick woman in a remote village who they say is near death and who has begged for a priest to come and comfort and pray with her. He already feels overburdened and put upon by his many priestly duties. He wants to reach the sick woman before she dies and convinces himself that as a priest he must respond to the earlier call. He prays for the victim, but avoids any eye contact that might distract him from his mission.

Next comes the Levite. He is not an evil man nor is he unsympathetic to the poor and the suffering. But right now he too is on an urgent mission. He is to meet with someone in a distant town who has promised to provide desperately needed financial help to him and his large family. It could be disas- trous to his loved ones if he is late for the meeting. He promises himself that he will certainly inform the authorities in the next village about the victim.

Finally, the Samaritan. He is no saint, and has little love for the Jews collectively, believing that most of them go out of their way to lord it over his fellow Samaritans. He is in a hurry and the last thing he needs now is to have to witness this ugly scene. Anyway, it’s none of his business, right? Still he can’t take his eyes off this poor, bloody and disheveled bum. Maybe attacked by robbers. Or maybe just a drunk or a drug user who could never hold a decent job. Stupid as well, for travelling alone and on foot on this stretch of road. And if he does stop and try to help this guy, what is he letting himself in for? God makes him look, and looking the Samaritan sees another human being needing his help. Even if this other human being might be a Jew, even if he might be a drunk or a drug ad- dict, even if it is his own fault that he got into this mess in the first place. God makes him look and he sees. And he was moved with compassion at the sight. He approached the victim, poured oil and wine over his wounds and bandaged them. Then he lifted him up on his own animal, took him to an inn and cared for him…Jesus said… “Go and do likewise.” (Lk 10: 33-37) (by Bill Kramer, Life, Justice and Peace) iPhones for Seniors On Tuesday, July 16, we will offer free training on how to better use your iPhone. Designed especial- ly for 55+, this is a free service provided by the Telephone Access Program. The training includes an overview of IPhone features and use as well as time for individual questions and atten- tion. Beware of Phone, Email, and Text Scams There have been a number of phone, email, and text scams that supposedly are coming from Msgr. John requesting money and/or gift cards. CAUTION: do not send money or gifts cards to any- one without some sort of confirmation through a trusted and known channel of communication. If you get such a re- quest, please call the parish office at 949 -249-4091 and check with Steven, our Office Manager before you do anything more. This seems to be happening more and more as people get numbers and contacts through social media or the parish website or the weekly bulletin. Be on guard!
