All Rights Reserved. Director’s Welcome For me, Bard Graduate Center’s Quarter-Century Celebration this year was, at its heart, a tribute to our alumni. From our first, astonishing incoming class to our most recent one (which, in a first for BGC, I met over Zoom), our students are what I am most proud of. That first class put their trust in a fledgling institution that burst upon the academic art world to rectify an as-yet-undiagnosed need for a place to train the next generation of professional students of objects. Those beginning their journey this fall now put their trust in an established leader who they expect will prepare them to join a vital field of study, whether in the university, museum, or market. What a difference a generation makes! I am also intensely proud of how seriously BGC takes its obligation to develop next-generation scholarship in decorative arts, design his- tory, and material culture. -

Whitechapel Gallery Ten Years of Transformation 2009–2019 1 Message from the Director One of my first responsibilities on becoming Director of the Whitechapel Gallery in 2001 was to confirm the purchase of the grand Victorian Passmore Edwards Library, adjacent to the Gallery’s own 1901 Arts & Crafts building. We asked ourselves, how should we expand our physical footprint while saving a heritage building? And, what could this marvelous sequence of spaces contribute to the experience of art? All the while we needed to remain faithful to our founding mission of sharing great art with everyone. In 2009 – after eight years of planning, hundreds of meetings, millions of pounds raised and the sturm und drang of the construction itself – Whitechapel Gallery opened its new space. Designed by Flemish architects Robbrecht and Daem the dramatically expanded building also inaugurated a new chapter in the story of the Whitechapel Gallery. The decade that has passed since those whirlwind opening weeks has been one of conversation and partnership; of the local and the global; and of experimentation and innovation. The success of the past ten years is a cause for celebration and a source of inspiration as we forge ahead in our role as an international epicentre for the dissemination of art, culture and creativity. The extraordinary figures and images in the following pages are a testament to the collective accomplishments of the past decade. However, none of these would have been achieved without the individual efforts of so many. It has been a privilege to work with so many great artists, curators, critics, collectors, scholars, gallerists, educationalists, supporters, colleagues and of course visitors, all of whom have joined us in our curatorial adventure. -

On a remote island in Finland, mega-collectors Anita and Poju Zabludowicz have established a breathtaking creative oasis. Perhaps it was the milky light of the night in summer, when the sun barely goes down. Or maybe it was the midnight saunas followed by bracing dunks in the sea. More likely, it was simply the light- headedness that comes from being out of the studio and plunked on a remote island off the southern coast of Finland, with little in sight except sky, water, forest, and fields. Whatever the cause, no one felt much like sleeping—not the rising stars Sam Falls, Caragh Thuring, or Nicolas Deshayes, all artists in residence on the property; nor Olafur Eliasson, who was visiting to scope out sites for a possible commission; nor Keith Tyson, a Turner Prize winner. Tyson’s Large Field Array, a work combining 300 sculptural elements, was soon to be housed in its own enormous barn on the grounds, which are dotted by rustic cabins. “Art camp” is how they all described the place. Such is the allure of Sarvisalo, home to the family retreat–turned–art colony and sculpture park owned by Anita and Poju Zabludowicz. -
The Great Warden and His College
CHAPTER Ill The Great Warden and His College Robert Brinckerhoff Fairbairn was Warden of St. Stephen's College for 36 years - from 1862 until 1898, a year before his death at age 81. He was styled the ''Great Warden''. by Thomas Richey, one of his predecessors, and that designation has continued throughout all of the College's history. The present-day college still gains a sense of Fairbairn's appearance and presence from the bronze bust of him which is above the mantel in the Presidents' Room of Kline Commons, and from the oil portrait hanging over the fireplace in the foyer of the President's office. In appearance Fairbairn was of slightly less than middle height, round, ruddy and of a stern visage. This sternness, however, was more that of dignity than of hardness. He was tender hearted and had delicate regard for the feelings and wishes of others. He was as devout as he was just, and abounded with kindness, self~sacrificing generosity, and refinement. 1 He was born in Greenwich Village, New York City, in 1818. His father, a Scotchman, was a modestly circumstanced book publisher and his mother a native of Poughkeepsie. After ordinary schooling and special training in the Mechanics school, he worked for three years in a book and stationery store, and then at the age of 16, decided to prepare himself for the ministry of the Episcopal Church. He started at Bristol College in Pennsylvania, and upon the demise of that institution he went on to Washington College (now Trinity) in Hartford, graduating with a bachelor of arts in 1840 at age 22. -

It is our way of thanking and recognizing the generosity of all our donors from the 2012 fiscal year. Your gift was counted among the almost 3,500 others that resulted in $42,015,898 in funds raised this year to support scholarships and annual operating expenses, create and enhance endowment funds, and finance capital projects. Financial contributions are critical to the operations of the College; so too are the many volunteers who give of their valuable time and resources. My deepest thanks go to Board of Trustees, Board of Governors of the Bard–St. Stephen’s Alumni/ae Association, Parents Advisory Council, and members of the Boards of the Center for Curatorial Studies, Bard Graduate Center, Conservatory of Music, Fisher Center, Levy Economics Institute, Bard High School Early College, Bard Music Festival, and our newest group, the members of the Longy School of Music of Bard College.
