Trevor and Veronica tropical cyclones in Northern Australia 1 / 4 Two Tropical Cyclones have struck Northern Australia at the end of March 2019. Tropical Cyclone (TC) Trevor made landfall as a Category 4 TC on the eastern coast of Northern Territory of Australia on the 23 March. It caused heavy rainfall, strong winds and storm surges, particularly in the Borroloola area, close to Port McArthur. Tropical Cyclone Veronica moved along the northern coast of Western Australia causing heavy rains and flooding in the Pilbara Region and Karratha through 24 and 25 March until it weakened below tropical cyclone intensity. Although reclassified as an ex- cyclone, Veronica is still causing heavy rains and flooding in the affected region. Australia’s Bureau of Meteorology provides regular updates on the flooding in the Pilbara Coastal Rivers and De Grey River catchments, following the passage of Veronica (here). The Copernicus EMS Rapid Mapping module was activated on 23 March to produce delineation maps over four Areas of Interest (AoI). The latest delineation maps for Port Hedland and Tennant Creek show a total of 8,287 ha (82.9 km2) as flooded, using satellite imagery acquired on 26 March 21:36 UTC and 27 March 08:18 UTC respectively, while no residents have been affected so far in these areas. The maps and vector data are available for viewing and download on the EMS Website: EMSR350: Trevor and Veronica tropical cyclones in Northern Australia.
