PROGRESS REPORT 1ST April 09 to 31 March 2010

Trinita has progressively completed project titled “To Promote Socio- Educational Empowerment of the Marginalized Slum Girls (9-19 years), through Human Right Based Approach to Health and Personality Development ” at Topsia Tiljala, Ultadanga and Tangra with 200 matginalised adolescent girls between the age 9-19 years along with their families and the larger community. The project met with spontaneous support from the community as the girls and their families benefited immensely.

Objectives of the Project

• To control dropout from the formal school and to provide remedial coaching • To promote alternative education for non - school going girls and to provide bridge course support for school drop - out girls • Mainstreaming the non - school girls • To provide interactive session on health, education, (including sex education), assertive skill and personality development • To provide skill development training for young adolescent girls.(12 -19) • To provide nutritious food for marginalized girls

ACTIVITIES

Girls Club Centre

Trinita set up 9 GCC in 7 slum areas of Topsia Tiljala Tangra Ultadanga and Mehendi Bagan and enrolled 200 marginalized adolescent girls in various GCCs, providing them education health, nutrition and skill training. these centre operated 3 hours a day for four 4 days a week ..

Educational guidance and interactive session • Giving proper guidance to their class work and preparing the girls for examinations studying in the formal school and also providing alternative education to girls who are not attending any school.

• Providing bridge course support to the girls who have dropped out from the formal school ,and preparing them for possible mainstream in the formal school .

• Providing proper education on reproductive health ,personal health and hygiene, and interactive discussion on violence,physical abuse and establishing positive health habits

• Discussions and interaction with girls about gender equality and build up confidence and assertiveness skill. and age of marriage ;

Economic life

Trinita has been providing vocational training for young adolescent girls (aged between 12 to 19 yrs ) twice a week at every centre for one hour giving training on sewing , tailoring , cutting , candle making ,bindi making , nail polish making , soft toy and mehendi designing etc .

Trinita organized a 15 day workshop on quilting training for girls which was provided by Sharon J Vincent from Thadhani Foundation (USA) .Special training for 20 girls on the different products like wall hanging ,cushion cover, telephone cover, pillow cover,baby quilt, hand bag were also imparted.

Health check - up Trinita organized health check up camps as per project plan wise by the Retd. Doctor for 200 girls as quarterly basis and regular provided health guidance not only for the girls but also for the community .

Nutrition Trinita providing tiffin 2 /3 days a week in 9 centres which include boiled egg, bread, sweet, cake, milk, nuts and seasonal fruits etc.

Excurssion Trinita organized an educational tour on 17 th March 2010 at Snake Garden where 435boys and girls participated. They spent the whole day in the Snake Garden picnic spot and conducted quizzed, sit and draw,dance, drama song play , the girls are enjoyed greatly the whole day .

Training / Orientation • Organised a training for the animators and training for volunteer • Organise a 3 day training with Dr. Thadhani on social abuse and gender equality ,sexual harassment and exploitation of women and girls • Organise AIDS awareness programme for adolescent girls and the community through role play .

Achievement • Our main achievement has been that no girls have dropped out from formal school. Around 160-170 girls are continuing their formal school education.

• Girls are getting interest to admit themselves in trinita’s Centres and girls are taking admission in the nearest formal school.

• Most of the girls are now conscious regarding their equal right in the family and getting interest to continue their education most of them are very eager to complete their school education at Madhyamik ,HS etc

• Girls are also trying to properly prepare themselves so that they may become self sufficient.

CASE STUDY OF GIRLS

Nisha Prajapati a 15 years old girl of GCC No .3 Ultadanga canal side

Mother - Rina Prajapati Occupation – domestic servant

Nisha is very intelligent girl and she is very much interested in her study she is also interested to practice dance and musicf in her life .

Nisha part time work with a catering group( working as food server) help her to earn Rs 70/- Nisha’s father is conservative and does not like his daughter to go out side the house even for education. But Nisha very much like to attend the GCC but some times she is absent because of her father. Nisha has to lie to her father to attend the GCC as she desperately wants to continue her study and also get skilled training to enable her to become self dependent in life.

Tumpa doing hawkery with her father selling fruits door to door.They are 2 sisters and one brother Tumpa is a student of class VII of Gyanendriya siksha Niketan ,Tumpa’s family is very very needy and it is difficult for themto arrange full meals every day . But Tumpa and her family are interested about her education and Tumpa wants to continue her study. They are happy because of the guidance Tumpa has been receiving from GCC and continuing her study. she wants to earn in future through skill training which she has been getting from the GCC . Tumpa wants to support her family through soft toy making and selling in the market She also wants to teach children who are not to going school .

Family Member - 6

Jayashree Manna a student of Chowdhuri Institute of class IX . She is living in a slum of Maruti bagan a tiny small room with the 6 members , jayashrre is the elder daughter of the family and has 3 sisters and 1 brother. The total family income of the is very meager around Rs 1500/-. It is very difficult to cope with increasing expenses for maintaining the family has to struggle for getting full meals, Jayshree’s mother wants to get hermarried but she wants to continue her study .

Family Member - 7

Hasina khatun is a student of class V of Charulata High School. The family income is around Rs 1500 to Rs 2000 per month .They are 3 sisters and 2 brothers and they have came from Bihar 12years ago . They lost their by flood and now in an illegal settlement in topsia canalside. no security for women and girls. Hasina’s father is addicted to alkahol and tortures her mother and themselves.

Hasina is very attentive in her studies . She is never absent in Trinita Centre,and always present in time. She wants to be doctor and want help the society in future.
