The remaining humans have since retreated behind three massive walls, Wall Maria, Wall Rose, and Wall Sheena, in order to protect themselves from the Titans. But this peaceful limbo couldn’t last. The Colossus Titan appeared out of nowhere to kick down the gate to Shiganshina District, the home of Eren Yeager, Mikasa Ackerman, and Armin Arlert, allowing other Titans to rampage through the town. This was followed by the Armored Titan crashing through Wall Maria, opening the interior of Wall Maria to Titan invasion. 20% of the remaining humans were killed in the following evacuation, famines, and population culling. Fueled by vengeance, Eren joined the Survey Corps along with his friends, old and new. They discovered Eren had the power to transform into a Titan himself, and that the Titans that had destroyed Shiganshina District had been controlled by humans as well. Unraveling the mysteries of who they were and where they came from revealed that the rest of the world was still flourishing, and the Walls were meant to keep the Eldians inside and unaware as much as they were to keep the Titans out. The mindless Titans are incomplete forms of the Nine Titans, unique and controllable Titans that were used by the Eldian Empire for almost two thousand years, created when a descendant of the original Titan is injected with Titan spinal fluid.

    Attack On Titan Series Hajime Isayama Reviewed by: Isabella,14 www.bethestaryouare.org Attack on Titan (Shingeki No Kyojin) is a manga series about a war between humanity and titans. There are three walls in the story, in which humanity resides in. Nobody leaves the walls except the Scouts. The Scouts are a group of people who are able to leave the walls and help protect humanity from the Titans. The main character, Eren Yeager, lived in one of the walls called Wall Maria, and had always looked up to the Scouts since he was young. He wanted to be able to grow up and help fight Titans with them. One day, Wall Maria was breached, and had fallen because of titans. Eren Yeager was able to escape getting eaten, but only after he had seen his mother get killed by a Titan. Everything inside of Wall Maria was destroyed, and after Eren had seen the power of the Titans first hand, he declared “I’ll kill every last one of them and break free of these walls!” I personally really enjoyed this series! Attack On Titan is a complex story, and as you read on, you learn more and more about the secrets of the Titans and everything that has happened with humanity inside and outside of the walls! I like that this manga has a lot of well written characters, and I also like how there aren't specifically any “good” or “bad” guys. This story is completely about perspective and how the readers choose to view these characters! Attack On Titan would be an appropriate story for anyone ages 11 and up! There is a lot of gore, death, and violence in this story, and sometimes vulgar language is used.

The series has come a long way since then, and many characters are almost unrecognizable since the start of Season 4, but the one theme that has stood the test of time up till now is indeed that concept of freedom. The Origin of Eren Yeager Eren Yeager, whose name is literally a pun on the Turkish word “Eren” meaning saint or holy man, and the German word “Yeager” meaning hunter. There is an immediate symbolism we can extract from the protagonist’s name, as Eren Yeager takes on the role of the “holy hunter” throughout the series, as his Titan powers are a miracle for mankind’s fight against the titans, and for humanity’s freedom. Eren Yeager’s Own Concept of Freedom The way Hajime Iseyama, creator of AoT, has intertwined the concept of fighting for freedom together with the character of Eren Yeager is nothing short of pure genius. From as early as Season 1, Eren can be seen uttering the words “I am free”, as he uses his Titan powers to tear apart the Female Titan, demonstrating his crystal clear motivation to “destroy my enemies” until there are none left. In what is perhaps one of the greatest showcases of character development in the history of anime, Eren Yeager has undergone drastic changes from Season 1 through to the Final Season, and yet, still retains his core values of fighting for freedom and moving forward.
