No attempt has been made, except in an incidental way, to treat the initial flourishing of Gothic architecture; that the reader has at least a passing acquaintance with the architecture of the Middle Ages is assumed. Instead, the emphasis has been placed upon the Gothic survival of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries; as Gothic architecture was virtually eclipsed during this period, many readers may feel that this emphasis is unwarranted. -

Obsessing about the Catholic Other: Religion and the Secularization Process in Gothic Literature Perhaps it was totally predictable that the past year has seen both the publication of a major book by Lennard Davis entitled Obsession!, as well as a new two player board game called "Obsession" in which one player wins by moving his ten rings along numbered slots. Interest in obsession, it would seem, is everywhere in high and low cultures. For Davis, obsession is both a cultural manifestation of what modernity has wrought, and a psychoanalytical phenomenon: in fact, he defines it as a recurring thought whose content has become disconnected from its original significance causing the dominance of repetitive mental intrusions (Davis 6). Recent studies have revealed that there are five broad categories of obsession: dirt and contamination, aggression, the placing of inanimate objects in order, sex, and finally religion2 Another recent study, however, claims that obsessive thoughts generally center on three main themes: the aggressive, the sexual, or the blasphemous (qtd. Davis 9). It is that last category - the blasphemous - that I think emerges in British gothic literature of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, particularly as seen in the persistent anti-Catholicism that plays such a central role in so many of those works (Radcliffe's The italian, Lewis's The Monk, and Maturin's Melmoth the Wanderer being only the most obvious). -

Novels had of course been reviewed in Ireland before Owenson (just as novels had been written in Ireland before Edgeworth) but this essay argues that the critical reception of her early novels, particularly The Wild Irish Girl, in the Dublin newspaper the Freeman's Journal consti tutes a foundational moment in the history of Irish fiction, analogous to Castle Rackrent's innovative fusion of narrative experimentation with the politics of Union. In the attention centred on the enigmatic figure of its author, The Wild Irish Girl controversy generated an interpretative crux equivalent to the problem of Edgeworth's unreliable narrator Thady Quirk; Sydney Owenson herself became as much the object of argument and specu lation as her fictional work. -

HORACE WALPOLE'S ENGLAND W. J. SYKES o many people of our day the eighteenth century makes a T. particular appeal. The present age is one of disillusion; the Victorian period is blamed (rightly or wrongly) as being the age of compro~e, the age of insecure foundations. Some, then, turn to the day before yesterday, the period before the French Revolution, and find a state of society that with all its faults has many at tractipns. Mr. Trevelyan has well expressed this idea: In the government of the country and the Empire there was much to blame as well as to praise, but no aristocracy has ever better fulfilled the functions for the performance of which aristocracy specially exists, but in which it too often fails-the intelligent patronage of art, philosophy, and literature, and the living of a many-sided and truly civilized life by means of wealth and leisure well applied .... It had faults, of which drunkenness and gambling were the worst, but it lived a life more completely and finely human than any, perhaps, that has been lived by a whole class since the days of the freemen of Athens. Among contemporary pictures of eighteenth century life in England given in memoirs and diaries, no other is drawn on so large scale or stands out with so great distinctness as that given in the Letters of Horace Walpole. Sir Leslie Stephen went so far as to say The History of England, throughout a very large segment of the eighteenth century is simply a synonym for the works of Horace Walpole .. -

THE ILLNESSES AND DEATH OF ROBERT WALPOLE by EDMUND ANTHONY SPRIGGS* ROBERT WALPOLE, later Earl of Orford, was born in 1676t in East Anglia, where urinary stone was common, and died in 1745 with this condition. The controversy about his death has been described by Jarvis,' who was particularly concerned with the pamphlet war, involving physicians, surgeons, and literary men, which followed it. Viseltear2 has more recently written an account of Walpole's last illness, with special reference to the treatment of urinary stone through the ages. My paper approaches the subject rather from the angle of a clinician. Walpole's mother is said to have had a stone in her kidney.3 His brother Horatio is described as having stone4 and gout.5 His putative youngest son, Horace, produced from his finger a gouty "chalkstone that I believe is worthy of a place in Mr Hunter's collection of human miseries".4 Walpole is said to have been born of a difficult labour, and to have been fed by a wet-nurse. He was one of a large family "prone to rickets and fever", many of whom died in infancy.' He had severe smallpox at Cambridge, and his physician, Master of Caius and a friend of Walpole's father, said to one of the Fellows of King's, "We must take care to save this young man, or we shall be accused ofhaving purposely neglected him, because he is so violent a Whig".6 As to Walpole's height, the authorities differ, but there is no disagreement that in * E. -

Hegemonizing Minds Through Life Writing: the Case of English Men of Letters As an Imperial Text
Journal of the Punjab University Historical Society Volume: 34, No. 01, January – June 2021 Shahzeb Khan * Azka Zia ** Hegemonizing Minds through Life Writing: The Case of English Men of Letters as an Imperial Text Abstract This article discusses the English Men of Letters series, as a representative work of Imperial Life writing, which was utilized by the British colonizers to influence local minds in favor of the colonial rule. Available studies which discuss EML series and Victorian biographies do so in the context of England, in this study, however, the colonial imperatives necessitated the publishing of English biographies which were needed in the colonies to support discursively the non- discursive and expansionist agenda of the colonizers on the ground. The paper argues that the series was a tool to materialize what Macaulay had imagined in 1835: a class English in taste, opinions, morals and intellect (Macaulay 1835). For this class to be created, rhetoric of Englishness was required which could pull subjectivities towards it in the consensual environment of an educational institution. One crucial cog in this juggernaut of colonizing Englishness was thus the EML series, the paper argues. It is thus an attempt to further understand the historical schema of imperialism with the help of biographies. The paper ends on a forward-looking note and emphasizes the need to develop a discourse on ways to resist hegemonic readings in institutional settings.
