PARKING There is handicapped parking very close to the Rackham on Fletcher Street and in the parking structure behind the Power Center on Palmer Drive. The first three levels of the Palmer Drive structure have 5 parking spots on each level next to each elevator. There are a total of 15 parking spaces in the garage. BATHROOMS ADA ADA compliant toilets are available on the front west corner (women) and the front east corner (men) of the building. Use the ramp located on the west end of the building to access the powered, left most, door. UMS EDUCATION ARTISTIC STATEMENT A Far Cry and Roomful of Teeth are two dynamic ensembles that challenge chamber music conventions by offering fresh commissions and diverse soundscapes. A Far Cry is a 17-member string orchestra that performs without a conductor, with a repertoire covering everything from 12th-century church music to recent works from leading living composers. The group was founded in Boston in 2007 and operates out of an open storefront in nearby Jamaica Plain, which allows the community to witness rehearsals from the street. The musicians of A Far Cry (who call themselves Criers) share musical and administrative leadership, giving them great agency in their artistic product. The vocal octet Roomful of Teeth will join A Far Cry for this performance. Roomful of Teeth was founded by Brad Wells in 2009, with the mission to “mine the artistic potential of the human voice.” The octet achieves this feat by embracing vocal traditions from all over the world, expanding its ideas and vocabulary through a commissioning project with new composers. When A Far Cry commissioned Roomful of Teeth ensemble member Caroline Shaw to write a new work, two of the most influential chamber ensembles today joined forces. They are now presenting this work on their first tour together. UMS is thrilled to bring the fearless approach of A Far Cry and Roomful of Teeth to the School Day Performance Series. We hope that students will engage with and learn from the collaborative and groundbreaking spirit of these ensembles. BE PRESENT 7 LEARN Why? The performance will explore how music can evoke narratives even when there are no lyrics or concrete storyline. Selected students will be invited on stage to participate in this interactive experience, collaborating with the artists to improvise stories as expressed by music. Clients are not obligated to send in a list of general song requests. Many of our clients ask that the band just react to whatever their guests are responding to on the dance floor. Our clients that do provide us with song requests do so in varying degrees. Most clients give us a handful of songs they want played and avoided. Recently, we’ve noticed in increase in cli- ents customizing what the band plays and doesn’t play with very specific detail. If you de- sire the highest degree of control (allowing the band to only play within the margin of songs requested), we ask for a minimum of 100 requests. We want you to keep in mind that the band is quite good at reading the room and choosing songs that best connect with your guests.     “Respect is just a minimum”: Self-empowerment in Lauryn Hill’s “Doo-Wop (That Thing)” Maisie Hulbert University of Cambridge 3,995 words Maisie Hulbert Self-empowerment in Lauryn Hill In his 2016 Man Booker Prize winning satirical novel The Sellout, Paul Beatty’s narrator states that “the black experience used to come with lots of bullshit, but at least there was some fucking privacy” (p. 230). The global hip-hop industry admittedly circulates images of blackness that were once silenced, but on the terms of an economically and socially dominant order. The resulting fascination with stereotypes of blackness, essentialised by those in positions of corporate power, means hip-hop becomes an increasingly complex identity- forming tool for young people worldwide. From a series of case studies exploring young black women’s relationship to hip-hop, Lauren Leigh Kelly argues that many “construct their identities in relation to media representations of blackness and femininity in hip-hop music and culture” (2015, p. 530). However, the stereotypical images of blackness which are encouraged ignore elements of choice, empowerment and re-contextualisation in hip-hop whilst meeting the widespread demand for imagery of a racial “Other”. The often negative associations with such images denies individuals the opportunity to identify their own relationship towards them, independent of media scrutiny and judgement. Lauryn Hill’s “Doo Wop (That Thing)” “sounds gender” (Bradley, 2015) through lyrics, flow, and multimedia, working to empower black femininities with self-respect. I argue that Hill’s track voices specifically black female concerns, prioritising notions of community central to black feminist thought (Collins, 2009).

She is a member of the Hartt String Quartet, the Providence-based Aurea Ensemble, and the summer of 2020 would have been her 19th with the Craftsbury Chamber Players of Vermont. She has also performed with Boston-based Chameleon Arts Ensemble, Radius Ensemble, and Dinosaur Annex. She has appeared as soloist with several orchestras including the Vermont Symphony, the Wintergreen Festival Orchestra, the Charlottesville Symphony, the Champlain Philharmonic, and the Boston Virtuosi.
