For final year students – both our own and at other universities, this study effort is combined with decisions around future careers: graduate studies or the hunt for the first real job. Addressing the issues behind these decisions, our graduate studies marketing campaign aims to explain the advantages of a taught masters from UCD. The core component is “expertise”. You learn from the expert in order to become one yourself. EILIS O’BRIEN The message is strong, consistent and credible. Director of Communication This year we feature Professor Alan Renwick, expert in agricultural economics, Dr Madeleine Lowery, expert in biomedical engineering and Dr TJ McIntyre, expert in Data Protection and IT law. In each case, their work is having an impact on society, whether on the globalisation of the food chain, on interventions in relation to brain function or on taking legal action to protect online privacy. Research-informed teaching is a very attractive attribute for prospective graduate students. It is seen by them as a measure to discern quality. The question “do you want to learn from those who write the books or those who recommend a reading list?” prompts a similar reaction. Good marketing campaigns should always be contemporary and topical. TJ McIntyre’s story was such that we had to record two versions of the radio ad while waiting for the verdict of the European Court of Justice on the case taken by TJ on behalf of Digital Rights Ireland over the Government’s retention of internet and phone records for 2 years for the entire population. And, given the Court found in his favour, it would be fair to say that more than our students could learn a great deal from TJ’s expertise. You can read more about TJ and this case on page five. The award is Boyle Higgins in recognition of his outstanding and internationally recognised research contribution to the advancement of chemistry. The Award, Gold Medal founded in 1985 in order to encourage the advancement of Chemistry in Ireland, is for research work carried out in the areas of Pure for Professor Chemistry, Applied and Industrial Chemistry or Chemical Education. Professor Guiry and his Pat Guiry group develop new catalysts and synthetic methodologies to prepare biologically Professor Pat Guiry, Head of School of interesting compounds. The group has Chemistry and Chemical Biology, has been supervised 36 PhDs to date and has 123 awarded the Boyle-Higgins Gold Medal of the publications, including 12 book chapters. Albie Sachs pictured with the UCD Ulysses Medal, which he was recently awarded in recognition of his global contribution to human rights UCD Ulysses Medal awarded to Albie Sachs Anti-apartheid campaigner and former judge of the first constitutional court in South Africa, Albie Sachs, was awarded the UCD Ulysses Medal in March. The award, which is the highest honour that the university can bestow, recognises his global contribution to human rights. The UCD Ulysses Medal is awarded to those whose work has made an outstanding global contribution. The Medal was inaugurated as part of UCD’s sesquicentennial celebrations in 2004 and celebrates the creative brilliance of our alumnus James Joyce. In 1988, South African security agents targeted Sachs in a car bomb in Mozambique. He lost his right arm and was blinded in his left eye. He survived and saw apartheid end. After recuperating in the UK, Sachs returned to South Africa and played a central role in Professor Mary Daly, who was recently elected the 55th president of the Royal Irish Academy drafting its democratic constitution. In 1994, Nelson Mandela appointed him a judge in the new constitutional court where he made Professor Mary E. Dail Reform The Independent Alliance is committed to fundamental Dail Reform. We are seeking that power be decentralised. Following the election, we believe there is a unique opportunity to return power to the Dail and reduce the power of the government. We believe the following measures are imperative for true Dail reform; a. The Independent Alliance will not be imposing any party whip, except on votes of confidence. This automatically rebalances power in favour of the Dail, against the cabinet. We would welcome a reciprocal gesture from other parties. If this is not possible for them on all aspects of Dail votes, perhaps parties might commit to removing the whip for certain topics? b. We believe the Taoiseach's prerogative on when to call a general election can be abused and manipulated to suit the Taoiseach of the day and their party, as opposed to acting in the country's best interest. For that reason, we want to remove this unique power and create stability and certainty for the lifetime of a government, thus increasing the work rate. For that reason we propose that Ireland follow the example of many other countries and introduce fixed terms for the Dail. There would of course be provision for an impromptu election if the Taoiseach fails to retain the support or confidence of a majority of the Dail.

The Building of the State Science and Engineering with Government on Merrion Street www.ucd.ie/merrionstreet Introduction Although the Government Buildings complex on Merrion Street is one of most important and most widely recognised buildings in Ireland, relatively few are aware of its role in the history of science and technology in the country. At the start of 2011, in preparation for the centenary of the opening of the building, UCD initiated a project seeking to research and record that role. As the work progressed, it became apparent that the story of science and engineering in the building from 1911 to 1989 mirrored in many ways the story of the country over that time, reflecting and supporting national priorities through world wars, the creation of an independent state and the development of a technology sector known and respected throughout the world. All those who worked or studied in the Royal College of Science for Ireland or UCD in Merrion Street – faculty and administrators, students and porters, technicians and librarians – played a part in this story. All those interviewed as part of this project recalled their days in the building with affection and pride. As chair of the committee that oversaw this project, and as a former Merrion Street student, I am delighted to present this publication as a record of UCD’s association with this great building.
