PET THERAPY HELPS RESTORE TRUST Pet therapy is an innovative approach that incorporates the use of trained therapy dogs as part of CALM’s existing service offerings. “Animal-assisted therapy is an important supplement to treatment, especially for clients who have experienced abuse,” explains Brenda Murrow, CALM psychology doctoral student. “We believe that trust bonds that are broken by abuse require much support to heal, and that interaction with a caring therapy dog can be an important step toward re-establishing trust, particularly for children.” Research shows that positive interaction with dogs encourages bonding and affiliation behaviors by increasing the associated neurochemicals in the brain. CALM staff and volunteers look forward to seeing the positive influence these therapy dogs have on their clients. 5 calm and storyteller celebrate books Earlier this year, Storyteller Children’s Center and CALM collaborated to host StoryFaire, a book and authors festival for children and families to celebrate the joy of reading.
