KNOEDLER & CO. 556 Fifth Avenue, near 46th Street October 2nd to 16th, 1915 ALPHONSE LEGROS Peintre et Graveur ~ AXY eulogistic articles have been written and many exhibitions held both in the Old and New Worlds of the works of this great master, but owing to the fact that they ap­ peal more to the artist than to the layman, and also that the number issued of the etchings is unusually small, the gen­ eral public have been unable to come in contact with and thereby study a representative collection of them except on very rare occasions. From Henri Beraldi, in his "Les Graveurs du XIX Siecle." we learn that there were six complete collections of the etchings of Legrosj viz., by MM. Seymour Haden, Jonides, Thibaudeau and Howard' in London and by MM. Burty and Malassis in Paris. Then, in a foot-note, he states there is an­ other complete collection—the most complete known—viz.: (we quote verbatim) "Rapport a l'Academie de Dijon, par Henri Chabeuf: juillet 1888. Cette Academic a decerne a Legros une medaille d'or. Le graveur n'a pas oublie sa ville natale: il a envoye au rnusee de Dijon une belle col­ lection de ses eaux-fortes. L'oeuvre de la Biblio- theque Nationale commence a se developper: il est a desirer qu'il soit pousse au complet. La collection la plus complete connue des eaux-fortes de Legros appartient actuellement a M. T. G. Arthur, de Glas­ gow." (The nucleus of this collection came from the "Thibaudeau" purchased in 1887.) This "most complete collection known," made by M. T. G. Arthur, Ayr, Scotland, has since been dispersed, and we are fortunate in being able to show a number in this exhibit. Alphonse Legros was born, as indicated above, in Dijon, ancient capital of la Bourgoyne, .the prin­ cipal city of the Department of the Cote-d'Or, the 18th of May, 1837. He first studied in l'ecole des Arts in his native city, going to Paris in 1851, enter­ ing the studio of the painter-decorator Cambon; from there to l'ecole Municipale de dessin, and in 1855 to l'ecole des Beaux-Arts. His first exhibit in the Salon was in 1857, the year that he became enamoured with etching, in which medium he was a constant student and worker ever after. He left France in 1863 to settle in England, where his work was more appreciated than in Paris. There they made him Professor of Engraving and Etching in the school of South Kensington. He also occupied in the University College, London, the Chair found­ ed by Slade for the Education of Art, an appoint­ ment which he owed to his friend, Sir Edward Poynter, P. R. A., who was then holding this Pro­ fessorship. He was a born teacher and counted every pupil as his friend. Finally he became a naturalized Englishman, and passed away, mourned by the art world, December 8th, 1911. Mr. Paul Burty Haviland aptly expresses Legros' work, when he writes in an article in The Print- Collectors' Quarterly upon Legros, that the key­ notes of his work are sincerity, sympathy and power. Legros' etchings and lithographs number over 400. CATALOGUE The number at the end of each title refers to the print's number in the catalogue of Legros' etchings by the artist's son. Mr. L. A.     Alphonse Legros (1837 - 1911) The Viol Player (Le joueur de viole) Brown ink, brown wash and black chalk, extensively heightened with white, on buff paper. Signed and dedicated a mon ami Holloway / A. Legros at the lower left corner of the backing sheet. 212 x 223 mm. (8 3/8 x 8 3/4 in.) This drawing is a preparatory study, in reverse, for Legros’ etching Le joueur de viole of c.1868. As one modern scholar has noted, both the drawing and the print ‘strongly evoke Italian prototypes. The viola player set in a landscape suggests Venetian sources. The reserved bystanders in the print are similar to the angels in Piero della Francesca’s famous Baptism of Christ that was acquired by the National Gallery, London in 1861. Contact with latter-day Pre-Raphaelite artists such as Burne-Jones may have motivated Legros to draw upon such sources.’ A related etching by Legros entitled Le joueur de contrebasse may also be dated to the same period. The present sheet bears the artist’s dedication to the printseller Marseille Holloway (d.1910). Holloway dealt in old and modern prints from premises in London, first in Henrietta Street and later in Bedford Street, and published a number of etchings by Legros. The drawing later entered the collection of Frank E. Bliss, who assembled one of the finest and most comprehensive collections of etchings and lithographs by Legros. Together with a large number of drawings and paintings by the artist, these were exhibited at the Grosvenor Gallery in London in 1922. Many of the paintings and drawings, including the present sheet, were sold at Christie’s the following year.

    • The Aesthetic Movement in England was related to other movements such as Symbolism or Decadence in France and Decadentismo in Italy. • British decadent writers were influenced by Walter Pater who argued that life should be lived intensely with an ideal of beauty. • It was related to the Arts and Crafts movement but this will be traced back to the influence of British decorative design, the Government Schools of Design and Christopher Dresser. • In France, Russia and Belgium Symbolism began with the works of Charles Baudelaire who was influenced by Edgar Allan Poe. • It is related to the Gothic element of Romanticism and artists include Fernand Khnopff, Gustave Moreau, Gustav Klimt, Odilon Redon, Pierre Puvis de Chavannes, Henri Fantin-Latour, and Edvard Munch. These artists used mythology and dream imagery based on obscure, personal symbolism. It influenced Art Nouveau and Les Nabis (such as Édouard Vuillard, Pierre Bonnard and Maurice Denis). • In Italy, Gabriele D’Annunzio (1863-1938) promoted irrationality against scientific rationalism. 1 Simeon Solomon (1840-1905), Walter Pater, 1872, pencil on paper, Peter Nahum Ltd, Leicester Galleries Walter Pater (1839-1894) • Essayist, literary and art critic and fiction writer. His father was a physician but died when he was young and he was tutored by his headmaster. His mother died when he was 14 and he gained a scholarship to Queen’s College, Oxford in 1858. • He read Flaubert, Gautier, Baudelaire and Swinburne and learnt German and read Hegel. He did not pursue ordination despite an early interest. He stayed in Oxford and was offered a job at Brasenose teaching modern German philosophy.

Introduction • The British love portraits. Portraits were the most popular category of painting in Britain and the mainstay of most artists earnings. There are therefore thousands of examples of portraits painted throughout the nineteenth century. I have chosen a small number of portraits that tell a story and link together some of the key artists of the nineteenth century while illustrating some of the most important aspects of portrait painting. • But what is a portrait? It seems obvious but I will explore many types of portrait and many reasons why portraits were painted to show it is not as simple as it appears at first. • Portraits had various functions: • Love token or family remembrance • Beauty, the representation of a particular woman because of her beauty (ideal beauties were painted but were not portraits) • Record for prosperity of famous or infamous people • Moral representation of the ‘great and the good’ to emulate.   • The Slade Girls'
    THE SLADE GIRLS' PHILIP ATTWOOD The students of Alphonse Legros at the University of London's Slade School of Art were responsible for a large number of the cast medals produced during the revival in Britain in the 1880s and 1890s. The majority of these students were women, and, as is the case with many women artists, they are now shadowy figures about whom little is known. Yet in their day their work attracted the attention of the art press, including an article by Charlotte Weeks entitled 'Women at Work: the Slade Girls',1 from which the title of this paper is borrowed. We must begin by asking why it was the women students who predominated in the medallic field. First, one has to take into account the slight preponderance of women at the Slade,2 a result of the enlightened admissions policy of the School. In her article, Weeks remem- bered the principles expressed by the first London Slade Professor, E. J. Poynter, in his inaugural address delivered in the new school in October 1871. Bone, born in 1876 Glasgow, Scotland, had first trained as an architect before turning to art, specializing in watercolor and printmaking. Bone trained at the Glasgow School of Art before moving to London in 1901. There he continued to study alongside artists such as William Strang and Alphonse Legros, eventually joining the New English Art Club. Bone traveled and exhibited extensively, including in London and New York. Joseph Pennell American, 1857 – 1926 Culebra Cut from the Vista d'Oro Panama Canal Series, 1912 etching Museum Purchase Reading Public Museum, Reading, Pennsylvania 1928.56.1 Joseph Pennell, born in Philadelphia, was best known for his prints of historic landmarks used in books and travel articles. He and his wife, writer Elizabeth Robins Pennell, published numerous books including The Life of James McNeill Whistler (1908), who was a close friend of the couple. Shortly before the completion of the canal in 1914, Pennell created a portfolio in 1912 titled Building of the Panama Canal. In it, the artist noted how impressed he was with the colossal scale of the construction, but he was equally impressed by the commitment of the workers who, he observed, “worked as if to work was neither a hardship nor an imposition.

Sculpturally, Rodin possessed a unique ability to model a complex, turbulent, deeply pocketed surface in clay. Many of his most notable sculptures were roundly criticized during his lifetime. They clashed with the predominant figure sculpture tradition, in which works were decorative, formulaic, or highly thematic. Rodin's most original work departed from traditional themes of mythology and allegory, modeled the human body with realism, and celebrated individual character and physicality. Rodin was sensitive of the controversy surrounding his work, but refused to change his style. Successive works brought increasing favor from the government and the artistic community. From the unexpected realism of his first major figure—inspired by his 1875 trip to Italy—to the unconventional memorials whose commissions he later sought, Rodin's reputation grew, such that he became the preeminent French sculptor of his time.
