18 Cover Story 365ink Magazine March 12–March 26, 2015 Issue #234 Dubuque365.com A New Experience in the Riverboat Lounge

It’s not unusual to see a bar reinvent itself. But usually it’s because business is slow and they need to change something to find a crowd. It’s something altogether different when a hotspot that is at capacity every weekend chooses to reinvent itself. This is exactly what has happened at the Riverboat Lounge in Hotel Julien. We sat down with Lyndsey Kaiser, Digital Media & Promotions Manager at Hotel Julien, to find out why.

“We noticed a stark contrast between the atmosphere of the hotel and that of the Riverboat Lounge. In an effort to bridge the gap between what our guests experience throughout the hotel and what they could expect to find in the Riverboat Lounge, we decided to introduce living room style seating, a new plate-sharing menu, handcrafted cocktails, a self-serve wine station, and more frequent live music. It truly is a lounge setting now that provides a seamless transition from the hotel to the Riverboat.” The beautifully remodeled Riverboat Lounge previously featured DJ dance music on weekends and had become such a popular hotspot among the college aged set that you would often see a line outside the door with one-in, one-out. There were no problems with the clientele, and certainly it was a healthy profit center. But having invested so much in an image for the overall hotel facility, having an entertainment venue that did not match the rest of the hotel was becoming more and more evident, especially to the guests and professional clients. So, they made a bold choice that many people would not have been so daring to make.
