Purpose - What’s the point? Closing the Gap!
• Improve the depth and quality of senior swimming – transition more swimmers into senior international teams! • England does not provide enough athletes for senior international teams • For swimmers below ‘World Class’ options are extremely limited • We are losing athletes to the US collegiate system • We are losing swimmers from the sport; attending university often means they can no longer access a high quality training environment Performance Centre Culture

• British Swimming's National Centres – Application process – BS Website • Discussions between Home Coach / Swimmer / Parent / School about options • Engage with Performance centres at Winter and Summer Meets • Look at other University / Swimming Club partnerships • 2019 University deadlines - UCAS website • (+ 18 months) - March in the year before University entry, swimmers should start exploring options - Identify the area they want to study and then identify University they may want to visit
• (+ 12 months) - Book on to open days and/or contact the relevant University contacts to let them know you want to visit
- Go to a few to compare and contrast! Remember to investigate: • the course and study options (full time/ part time/ distance learning/ placement years) • the University location (campus/ town/ city/ logistics of getting to lectures and training/ other things you may want to do whilst there) • the performance swim programme offer including meeting the coach!/ training hours/ SSSM support/ scholarship support • (+ 9 months) - From around mid January of the year of entry UCAS applications for most courses need to be submitted. Applicants can select up to 5.
• (+ 5 months) - Select two as your FIRM and INSURANCE choices by early May
• (+ 3 months) - Finish your FE studies
• (+ 1 month) - Get results. Communicate these to your FIRM choice (university and Swimming programme) even if they are not what you had worked and hoped for!
