Schirmer Reference, 2004. 2v bibl index afp ISBN 0028657993, $195.00 Not a subset of Baker's Biographical Dictionary of Musicians (CH, Sep'01), this biographical dictionary focuses on biography and evaluation. Nearly 600 entries provide birth and death data, genre categories, the performer's best-selling recordings since 1990, a selected discography, and text entries averaging 800 words (with no cross-references) covering career highlights. This snapshot of popular musicians since 1990 (45 percent in the rock/pop category, 20 percent in rap/hip-hop/rhythm and blues, the rest scattered among a dozen other categories--country, classical, jazz, Latin, etc.) is idiosyncratic. Some performers gain entry because of their influence (the Beatles, a 3,600-word entry), their innovation (Nirvana), their commercial success (Britney Spears), or their critical rather than commercial impact (Stereolab). Most readers will identify notable exclusions (e.g., Beta Band, Concrete Blonde, Travis). Commentary does not focus in particular on the 1990s, although four concluding essays and sidebars throughout the work give a flavor of the decade. One would hope for a more cohesive vision of the period; All Music Guide (CH, Sup'00) or The Encyclopedia of Popular Music (3rd ed., ed. by Colin Larkin CH, Sep'99) both provide broader coverage.     EARLY BLUES BIBLIOGRAPHY In any selection of books the choice must inevitably be subjective as to what to include or exclude. This selection has ommitted some choices that other might have included. Also there are many articles, periodicals and magazines that provide information for the researcher that cannot be included here but are, perhaps, in Robert Ford's 'Blues Bibliography' or Edward Komara's '100 Books Every Blues Fan Should Have'. This selection is based very much on my own collection of books found in markets, second hand book shops but more recently through Amazon and the web site 'Abe Books' Many books are out of print, have reached the third, fourth or later edition but details are included here that will allow the collector to locate and purchase their own choice. I have not sought to comment on the accuracy, usefulness or expertise of each publication and care should be taken on choice of purchase as many are price inflated when a little more research will lead to better value for money. Where possible I have tended to provide details of hard cover books but many are also available in soft cover at a much reduced price. It should also be remembered that any list such as this is out of date the moment that it is produced. New books are regularly published. The University Presses of America provide a sound source of academic work under the general priciple of 'Publish or Perish' which reflects the wide range of books from the very simple history to the in depth difficult to read study of an aspect of my favourite genre of music - The Blues.

Their arguments were based on the anticipated historical and cultural importance of obtaining and maintaining a collection of these materials. Little new research in this direction has been performed since then. The question arose as to what, if anything, has changed since this time. This question was answered by examining the compact disc holdings of the Cleveland Public Library, a major research-oriented facility. This examination was accomplished using three discographies of essential rock music titles, as well as recent "Billboard" Top 200 Album charts. The results indicated a strong orientation toward the acquisition of recent releases, with the "Billboard" charts showing the largest percentages of holdings for the system. Meanwhile, the holdings vis-a-vis the essential discographies ran directly opposite the "Billboard" holdings. This implies a program of short-term patron satisfaction by providing current "hits," while disregarding the long-term benefits of a collection based on demonstrated artistic relevance.

    Rock Vinyl Revival Presents A Brief History In the Court of the Crimson King Rock Vinyl Revival In the Court of the Crimson King In the Court of the Crimson King (subtitled An Observation by King Crimson) is the debut studio album by English rock band King Crimson, released on 10 October 1969 by Island Records. The album is one of the rst and most inuential of the progressive rock genre, where the band largely combined blues inuences that rock music was founded upon with elements of jazz, classical, and symphonic music. The album reached number ve on the UK Albums Chart and number 28 on the US Billboard 200, where it was certied Gold by the Recording Industry Association of America. It was reissued several times in the 1980s and 1990s using inferior copies of the master tapes. After the original masters were discovered in the Virgin archives in 2003, the album was remastered again by Simon Heyworth and reissued in 2004. A 40th anniversary edition of the album was released in 2009 with new stereo and 5.1 surround sound mixes by Steven Wilson. King Crimson made their live debut on 9 April 1969 and made a breakthrough by playing the Rolling Stones free concert at Hyde Park, London in July 1969, before an estimated 250,000 to 500,000 people. Initial sessions for the album were held in early 1969 with producer Tony Clarke, most famous for his work with the Moody Blues. After these sessions failed to work out, the group were given permission to produce the album themselves.

From 1966 to 1973, the city’s murder rate rose 173 percent. There was a growing bureaucracy and steadily decreasing social services. The city had a three billion dollar budget deficit by 1975. Gang violence and race agitation threatened middle-class whites who often expressed their fear by absconding to the suburbs. But others found a more esoteric form of escape. Disco was a function of ‘‘baroque indulgence’’ in the face of this overwhelming social and economic breakdown (Shapiro 4– 13). Indiscriminate sex, heavy drug use, dancing, and drinking all served as a form of motivated escapism—a sort of protest through studied nonchalance that girded its acolytes against the decay that grew around them.

Thanks to amateurish marksmanship, Marley, his manager, Don Taylor, his former wife, Rita, and others were saved from death when masked gunmen burst into the Marley home at 56 Hope Road in Kingston 6 on the night of December 3 1976 and sprayed bullets at and around them – none of which was fatal. The group then left Jamaica and went into prolonged exile in Babylon, during which time they recorded their Exodus album and most of the material for its follow-up, 1978’s Kaya album. major turning point in Bob Marley’s comparatively short, but highly influential Ainternational music career occurred in 1972 when he and the Wailers were signed to Chris Blackwell’s hip and growing Island Records label, which by now was expanding beyond rock and folk-rock (eg, Sandy Denny, Nick Drake, Free, Jade Warrior, Spooky Tooth and Traffic) to embrace the emerging sounds of reggae, ska and Bob Marley … hip, happy, cool, gifted and the associated musical idioms of Jamaica and the undisputed Poet Laureate of Reggae wider West Indies.
