Seiler calls “contemporary conscious popular music”, which includes “music of any genre that focuses on social issues and perceived problems in society and may or may not include music that carries an overtly political message”. Consequently, much of the analysis of their songs claim that these are only a mere description of the terrible situation countries such as Ireland and the US were facing at that time. In this paper, however, I will examine the sociopolitical significance of U2’s songs as an appreciator of their cultural contribution and show that the events which formed the backdrop to some of U2’s most explicitly political songs in the 1980s – especially those included in War and The Joshua Tree – are etched indelibly into the text of both Ireland’s and America’s troubled colonial and political history.

    1 Grunge Music In Bloom : Musical Analysis of Nirvana's Hit Gilad Cohen (Updated Jan 1 st 2009) Nirvana's music would probably not be the first choice of music scholars for analysis. Despite the band's tremendous success 1 in the early 1990s as one of the leaders of the grunge genre 2, the band's remarkable significance in pushing alternative music into the mainstream 3 and its influential precedents 4, very few popular music scholars have chosen to investigate Nirvana's music in depth 5. It seems that the band's direct, rough sound with its scream-like singing and thunderous distorted guitar 6, made music scholars believe that there was little room for careful musical analysis. The short, repetitive harmonic successions, the dogmatic instrumental arrangements, the fixed rhythmic patterns and the basic strophic rock-song forms - all seem to thwart any attempt to discover "hidden complexity" and richness below what might be conceived as simplistic surface 7. However, a closer look at the music of the leading grunge bands would unveil unique, innovative characteristics. Nirvana, Alice in Chains, Soundgarden and Pearl Jam – all share similar harmonic idioms, in which they present a fascinating mix of using traditional rock patterns from previous decades, while seeking new harmonic possibilities 8. The common use of the Phrygian mode 9, the use of power chords 10 as the basic harmonic unit (which many times blurs the definition between major and minor keys), the frequent cross relations between sequential chords and chromatic clashes between melody and harmony – all became trademarks of the genre 11 .

In Heavy Metal Humor, Gary Powell explores metal culture through the work of Mikael Bakhtin‘s “carnivalesque theory.” Describing the practice of inverting commonly understood notions of respectability and the increasing attempts to normalize them, Bakhtin argues that carnivals in Francois Rabelais’ work illustrate a sacrilegious uprising by the peasant classes during carnival days against dogmatic aristocrats. Powell asserts that Rabelais’ work describes cartoonish carnivals that continue in as exaggerated themes and tropes into other literary styles, such as comedy and horror that ultimately inform modern-day metal culture. To highlight the similarities of Bakhtin’s interpretation of Rabelais’ work to modern-day metal culture, Powell draw parallels to between Bakhtin’s carnivalesque theory and metal culture with two different, exemplary “humorous” metal performances, GWAR and Anal Cunt. Powell chooses “humorous” metal groups because, to achieve their humor, they exaggerate tropes, and behaviors in metal culture. To this end, Powell explores metal culture through GWAR, a costumed band who sprays their audience with fake body fluids as they decapitate effigies. He points out examples of Rabelais’ work which Bakhtin uses to describe carnivalesque tropes, and threads them to modern-day metal culture.

He told his mother and aunt he would be a famous singer one day. Lennon met Paul McCartney in 1957 at a church hall concert. They became friends and began writing songs together. They formed a band called The Beatles. They became popular playing live at local clubs in Liverpool and Germany. Then they became the most successful and influential act in music history. Lennon famously said The Beatles were more popular than Jesus. Lennon left The Beatles in 1970. That same year he released the ‘John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band’ album, which he recorded with his Japanese wife Yoko Ono.

The article argues that much of the attraction of such artists for young audiences stems from the way in which they are used to position the development – and cultural resonance – of a late twentieth century rock history (of which young fans have no direct memory or experience). In examining this contention, the article considers the significance of issues such as the relevance of late 1960s and early 1970s rock music in parent-child relationships, the function of visual media in the historical representation of rock icons in the ‘post-digital’ age, the significance of classic album and tribute band performances in portraying ‘freeze-frame’ fashion the work of ageing rock icons, and the function of ‘classic rock’ as the signature tune of a golden age.
