1 Scam Awareness

for Young People

The Youth Homeless Prevention team identified a need for scam awareness for young people. The driver for this approach was two recent incidents when young people living in supported housing became the targets of online loan scams and subsequently had monies withdrawn from their bank accounts. This left one young person without any monies for food or bills and the other young person is still having monies withdrawn weekly from his bank account.

‘Too many young people believe they’re unlikely to fall for a scam, making them complacent and vulnerable’, according to Action Fraud.

But young people are increasingly being targeted

The team then generated a presentation and asked young people to consult on it to ensure it met their learning needs. Advice guidance and support was also given by the Community Safety Team, NPTCBC Trading Standards and south wales police.

The final presentation is short to the point and also available in welsh. A workshop with Trading Standards was also delivered and during the workshop one of the attendees had a scam phone call which was unbelievable.

The presentation is available on the App and will also be delivered to young people at risk of homelessness, in supported housing and we are hoping other youth groups will take up the offer.

Spreading the word is the best way to stop the scammers!

1 Times Like These: how young voices got heard despite Covid

Young people from Neath Port Talbot are starring in a new video of their inspirational cover version of Times Like These by American rock Foo Fighters.

Neath Port Talbot Council’s Youth Service, in partnership with the dynamic, Neath based contemporary choral project Valley Rock Voices, set up a youth choir prior to the coronavirus pandemic, but the lockdown delayed its progress. However, the pilot initiative eventually took off using virtual meeting platform Teams.

Subsequently, young people from Pontardawe’s Cwmtawe Community School - working with the council’s Youth Service during the lockdown joined up to the youth choir with teacher Dan Lear co-ordinating the online meetings with all concerned. Further supported by youth practitioner Joanne Fisher.

The stirring Times Like These video is a result of their many hours of collaboration. Although the moving song was released in 2003, its message resonates strongly with our experience of the health pandemic and lockdown. Corinne Fry, Senior Youth and Community Officer with the Neath Port Talbot Youth Service, said: “The rationale for the initiative was to provide young people with the chance to learn something new, have fun and improve their wellbeing.

“This became even more apparent during lockdown when young people were isolated from such opportunities and their peers. Their talent is evident throughout this video and the message is poignant - something I‘m sure all who view it will agree on.”

Valley Rock Voices or VRV as the choir has become affectionately known, was born just three years ago by Musical Director Cerys Bevan, and has since grown to have more than 200 members. VRV provides an explosive ground breaking wall of sound and belts out the most popular foot tapping, tunes from the past few decades including everything from The Bee Gees to Primal Scream and Stormzy to Coldplay. The video creation was also supported by VRV’s Sam Bevan their videographer/editor

1 KIT Cam Nesa

It’s been a long time since face to face work with young people has been undertaken but April saw a small group return to work face to face alongside the Down to Earth Project in the Gower. The group includes members from both the KIT and CAM NESA projects.

The Down to Earth Project is based in the Pennard Site where the company have been tasked with making 6 affordable houses for the Gower area. These houses are built with sustainability and the environment in mind as is the ethos of Down to Earth. The exterior of the properties are covered with Welsh Larch, the roof was made at Port Talbot steelworks and will have solar panels inserted onto the roof to provide renewable energy. The property is insulated with sheep’s wool and compressed timber that ensures that the houses are well insulated to ensure heat is not lost and running costs are minimal. The plaster boards are all recycled and again this adds to the insulation of the houses.

A previous team that has participated in the Down to Earth project were involved in making the timber frames for the houses and this team has come in right at the other end of the scale where they have been heavily involved in the insulating process, cutting and hanging plasterboards and the securing of the external Welsh larch cladding.

The project has allowed the participants to learn a number of new skills, having the opportunity to work on a real construction site during a global pandemic has allowed them to understand the principles of working on a building site and the extra Health and Safety precautions that are needed to make the site COVID safe. It has also had a tremendous positive impact on the participant’s mental health.

1 All of the young people have done amazingly well and as a Youth service we are incredibly proud of what they have achieved so far. One Member of the team named Luke said “This project has made me so much more positive about everything and has allowed me to be able to get out and help others”. I must take this opportunity to say a massive thank you to Both Jake and Ian at Down to Earth for their unbelievable support and willingness to help our Young people.

Returning to face to face delivery has been such a fantastic breath of fresh air for the learners and Youth Workers involved.

Youth Council – Lola’s story

A few weeks ago, I was very lucky to have been passed on an opportunity from the youth council from ‘Sports Wales’ about a new youth panel that they were forming, and I knew that it was a great chance to use my voice as a young person to give my opinions on sports in Wales. So, I sent in my application form and within a few weeks I received an email informing me that had been shortlisted, I was extremely happy. I then had an interview the next week, over of course and I felt as though I did pretty well, but I knew that a lot of other young people had applied so I wasn’t getting my hopes up. And then to my surprise I received another email a week or two later congratulating me on receiving a place on the new youth panel for Sports Wales. I was extremely pleased, and also so lucky to have received this opportunity in the first place. This role will consist of attending meetings, training courses, events and more, the role on the youth panel will also last for approximately 2 years. I would like to thank Janet and Rachel for giving me lots of tips and advice, and also all those from Sports Wales, cannot wait to begin!

1 Youth Council

Neath Port Talbot Youth Council have been considering ways to make Neath Port Talbot a sustainable and eco-friendly environment. The Youth Council decided to create a social action plan to increase biodiversity within communities and schools. To achieve this the Youth Council set out with an ambitious vision to offer both Primary and Secondary schools throughout Neath Port Talbot the opportunity to receive free fruit trees to plant in their grounds.

The research undertaken by the Youth Council showed a typical tree, once fully grown can absorb around 21 kilograms of carbon dioxide each year. Having fruit trees in a school learning environment and around a community would have many benefits, assisting to help reduce the amount of carbon dioxide in the area and providing a resource of free fruit, which would be used for cooking and even in the school canteen, making the school learning place a greener and more eco- friendly place.

An astounding 31 schools across the Borough expressed an interest, each school has received a minimum of 2 fruit trees each, with some schools receiving support from the Youth Service and pupils to plant the trees by the Youth Service.

The project has a huge success not only for the environment but also providing an opportunity for pupils to get involved and learn about the benefits of having a self-sufficient food source and the positive environmental effects of planting trees. Hopefully this initiative will encourage more pupils to go 'green' and do more gardening, planting more trees at home or in the school grounds.

1 Taibach Youth Club

Virtual Cooking Sessions Young people from Taibach Virtual Youth Club have been busy participating in Virtual Cooking sessions this term. At the request of one of the young people, on 13th May 2021 the group made ‘rock cakes’, followed by shortbread a week later. We followed recipes taken from the website ‘Baking with Granny’. Everyone had lots of fun there was plenty of laughter, the young people enjoyed making (and eating) the rock cakes. Well worth the messy hands and the messy kitchens!

Employability Skills This term during virtual club sessions young people from Taibach have participated in employability skills which consisted of young people thinking and discussing what kind of jobs and careers there are. The group discussed quotes on equality which young people could either agree or disagree to the sentence which raised discussions on equality legislation. Several young people also requested support to complete CV’s on a one to one basis so they have one ready for the future. Young people have also discussed the importance of doing courses, volunteering and hobbies which go on their CV as many young people are competing for the same jobs, and discussed the importance of getting as much experience as they can to put on their CV to make them stand out from everybody having similar qualifications.

Online Training Courses This term young people from Taibach Youth Club have been completing accreditation to upskill themselves. 12 young people have been provided with log on details for Virtual College Level 2 Food Safety & Hygiene training as well as Food Allergy Awareness training. 2 young people have already successfully completed the training. This training has proved to be valuable for getting part time jobs. Since the easing of restrictions 1 young person has returned to her part time post at a local restaurant, completing the training definitely helped with this. 7 Young people took time out of their half term holidays to participate in a Budgeting course with ACL (Adult Community Learning). This course will increase awareness of budgeting for the future when they are in college or university.

1 Period Dignity

Cymmer Youth Club and Afan Valley Swimming Pool Support Period Dignity in the Community

The youth club and swimming pool are working together to make sure that young people using the swimming pool have access to free sanitary products. Youth club staff provided the swimming pool with a box of assorted products which will be available for young people that use the pool. Pool Manager, Janet Thomas was really excited with the new venture. She told staff at the youth club that there have been occasions where girls have needed sanitary products at the pool. Janet said that she ‘was actively looking at ways of addressing the issue and was glad that the problem was solved by working in partnership with the youth club’.

This partnership approach is in line with the welsh Governments statement on Period dignity - Period dignity is about addressing period poverty whilst also ensuring products are free and accessible to all women and girls in the most practical and dignified way [WG 2020].

1 GSA Youth Group

This term our GSA youth group has been meeting weekly, virtually. We are currently working on a Wellbeing project within the group, which contains information and a range of resources which can be used to help support with anxieties which our young people may face at this uncertain time. As Youth and Community Worker’s we recognise the importance of promoting and prioritising young people’s mental wellbeing and self-care, during the pandemic. We provide a safe space for discussions on emotional wellbeing and have been having regular ‘hug in a mug’ sessions, which include a hot drink and a chat.

We have created Wellbeing packs made up of items such as face masks, mindfulness colouring books, Journals and much more which promote self-care and wellbeing.

This term the charity MIND have attended the group for an informal chat, discussing mental health within the LGBTQ+ community, to learn about support services and gather useful information and tips.

We’d like to congratulate our group member Lacie McDonald for designing the winning poster for the Youth Service Slow Cooker Project. Young people have enjoyed making dishes such as Beef Stroganoff, Chicken Curry, Chilli Con Carne and Spaghetti Bolognese, developing their cooking skills and exploring new recipes.

I love all things youth work. Empowering young people to make healthy, happy lifestyle choices to better improve their quality of life is a passion of mine. I have a great interest in understanding and supporting young people with mental health difficulties, breaking the mould and finding coping strategies and tools to best suit the individuals…..and of course, I love all the fun activities I have been blessed enough to do with young people as part of my role as a Youth Worker, giving young people life skills and fond memories to help mould their views on the world around them. ------

Please keep an eye out for Summer of Fun events and activities that will be taking place in communities across Neath Port Talbot over the Summer Holidays.

Summer of Fun is an offer for children and young people aged 0-25 to play and participate in leisure, recreational, sporting and cultural activities to help rebuild their social and emotional skills in both Welsh and English. 1 Never too old to learn

During the Covid 19 Pandemic Taibach Youth Club have been meeting online to participate in various activities. This has meant that staff have had to learn new skills to be able to access training opportunities and to join young people online through platforms such as Teams.

Many staff have found this challenging as we usually work face to face with club members. Learning new skills is always a challenge but never more than for Deputy Worker in Charge, Ron Jarrett. Ron had never really needed to use computers and social media was alien to him. Gareth David, Activity Worker, took on the challenge of supporting Ron to increase his skills to be able to join sessions online.

Gareth said “I knew it was going to be challenging as Ron has never used a laptop before. Signing onto Teams and using websites to do training was something which he found difficult to begin with. Discussions with Ron over the phone proved unsuccessful so I walked down to his garden wall to show and tell. I must admit I was very surprised how quickly Ron adapted and picked up on learning and he was on Teams in no time with the rest of the members of Taibach YC. There were a few teething problems at the start with a few WhatsApp and FaceTime calls which resolved the issues”.

It just goes to show no matter how old you are or how tech savvy you are it’s never too late to learn and everybody in Taibach Youth Club is extremely proud of what Ron has achieved. Ron has also completed both Food Hygiene and Food Allergy Awareness training this term which is an amazing achievement. Both staff and club members are extremely proud of him.

Well done Ron!!

1 Youth Mayor’ Statement

Hello! My name is Erin Sandison and, in celebration of Youth Work Week 2021, I have been asked to share my experience with youth work and how it has affected my life.

My first encounter of youth work was through Neath Port Talbot Youth Council, and I have been a proud member of this organisation for 6 years (and counting). I applied for the Youth Council after one of my comprehensive-school teachers recommended the opportunity to me, and I still remember being woken-up by my very excited mother on the day I received my acceptance letter. Since then, my involvement with the Youth Service has only expanded, as I have been involved in various conferences and conventions, attended many residential trips, and been included in the numerous ventures of the NPT Youth Council, as we continue to advocate for young people across the county.

Youth work has helped me in many ways, such as continually providing new opportunities for me – For example, due to my involvement with the Youth Service, I was offered a Young Ambassador role of a mental health and wellbeing organisation called “Inspirational Futures”, where I have the chance to raise awareness on an issue that I am extremely passionate about. Youth work has also given me the opportunity to make change for other young people, such as my work to make ID cards available to young carers across Neath Port Talbot, making lone shopping trips and school absences easier to explain. Thanks to my involvement with the Youth Service, I was able to assume the role of Deputy Youth Mayor between 2019-2020 and now assume the role of Youth Mayor until the end of 2021 too, and this role has opened numerous doors for me, both in a personal and professional capacity.

As well as providing new opportunities, youth work has helped me grow as an individual by enhancing my skillset, most noticeably by increasing my confidence regarding public-speaking, as this used to give me terrible anxiety. Nowadays, I can speak at conferences or meetings without fear and this has naturally been useful in all aspects of my life, particularly as I look forward to attending Bristol University from September.

24 Lastly, youth work has enabled me to connect with individuals who I may not have come across on my own, from different age groups, backgrounds, and countries, and I have been able to form lasting friendships, especially during residential trips that were always memorable. While most of these people have now moved-on from youth work, I still have contact with them through social media outlets and my friends are always willing to give me advice when needed.

I would like to take this moment to thank the Youth Service for their incredible work, and I would also like to thank a few individuals in particular who have had a special impact on my life; my mentors on the Youth Council, first Carolyn and now Jan, Corinne and Jason – Thank you for pushing me to always be the best version of myself. It’s safe to say, I would not be the person I am today without NPT Youth Service.

Youth work has truly changed my life, for the better.

Don’t forget you can keep up to date with everything the Youth Service are doing to celebrate this week via our Facebook and Twitter pages, and find out what’s going on, join the conversations and celebrations of Youth Work throughout Wales use #ThisIsYouthWork and #DymaWaithIeuenctid.
