MOBILE SMART FUNDAMENTALS MMA MEMBERS EDITION DECEMBER 2013 messaging . advertising . apps . mcommerce www.mmaglobal.com NEW YORK • LONDON • SINGAPORE • SÃO PAULO MOBILE MARKETING ASSOCIATION DECEMBER 2013 REPORT A Year of Transformation The new-year invariably kicks off with a slew of predictions, many of which are being usefully defined and shared by our global and regional board members, and many of which are likely to come to fruition or certainly build in momentum. The one area that we feel is certain to gain momentum and have a huge impact on how the mobile industry develops in 2014 is the number of brands that we will see moving from the sidelines and fully into the game. The impact of this will be seen both in the gains in mobile spend as brands move away from the 1% average that we’ve been seeing and start moving towards 10-15% mobile spend with increased ROIs as a result. We will also start to see how mobile is driving both innovation in marketing and transformation of business. As always, the MMA will be providing support and guidance for the entire industry, shining a light on inspiration, capability development, measurement and advocacy allowing all constituents to continue building their businesses, with mobile at its core. We look forward to supporting you and the industry. I wish you much success in 2014. The findings, based on analysis of interviews with more than five dozen industry thought-leaders and underlined with quantitative research from Bloomberg New Energy Finance’s Intelligence database, are contained in the white paper “Crossing the Valley of Death: Solutions to the next generation clean energy project financing gap.” Clean Energy Group, with the support of The Annenberg Foundation, commissioned Bloomberg New Energy Finance to join in the study, which examines the shortage of capital for clean energy technologies that require extensive and expensive field-testing before being deployed. Clean Energy Group and Bloomberg New Energy Finance conducted over 60 open-ended interviews with technologists, entrepreneurs, project developers, venture capitalists, institutional investors, bankers and policymakers from 10 countries across the globe to provide solutions on how to address the “Valley of Death” phenomenon. Ken Locklin, Clean Energy Group’s director of finance and investment, said, “This study presents some exciting new approaches to overcome this Valley of Death financing challenge that we should explore further.

Barry Ritholtz, Chief Executive Officer, Fusion IQ Barry L. Ritholtz is one of the few strategists who saw the the coming housing implosion and derivative mess far in advance. Ritholtz issued warnings about the market collapse and recession in time for his clients and readers to seek safe harbor. Dow Jones Market Talk noted that “many market observers predict tops and bottoms, but few successfully get their timing right. Jeremy Grantham and Barry Ritholtz sit in the latter category…” For the prescience of his market calls in 2009, he was named Yahoo Tech Ticker’s Guest of the Year. (A summary of major market calls can be found here) His observations are unique in that they are the result of both quantitative data AND behavioral economics. In 2010, Barry L. Ritholtz was named one of the “15 Most Important Economic Journalists” in the United States. Ritholtz writes a column on Investing for The Washington Post (His WaPo columns are here); he also contributes occasional column to Barron’s and Bloomberg (See The Myth of Uncertainty).
