Call or text www.LansingDioceseCWC.org Melinda Boulton at (810) 931-8374 to RSVP. Fr. Anthony’s Article Literate Literature It has been a lengthy period of time since I “published” (I use the term VERY LOOSELY) any of my attempts at taking up otherwise usable space in the bulletin and rendering it unusable, while at the same moment being the disap- pointment of scholars or journalists around the world. Things being what they are, with the ebb and flow of life events and their effects upon us physically, emotionally or spiritually, it can be a trial of sorts for a person to move forward into the future and attempt to set everything ship shape, in Bristol fashion. Now that the customary rambling excuse has been presented and the feeble attempt to stumble through justification of one’s actions has been accomplished, we will move on to our next topic – literature - and in particular, Catholic litera- ture. Now we recall the statement concerning the Magisterium (the teaching arm and authority of Christ’s Church), that she has the right and obligation to “preserve God’s people from deviations and defections, and to guarantee them the objective possibility of professing the true faith without error” (Catechism, #890). Canon law also reminds of the fact that all writings claiming to be Catholic – particularly those concerning faith and morals - should first be submitted to the proper Church authorities for review to ensure freedom from error and if necessary receive the condemnation of the Church as being opposed to the truth. Now we shall take a look at a few perfunctory things to clue us in on whether or not that book is really in accord with the teachings of Christ and His Church on earth and therefore we shall concentrate our gaze on two very important things concerning Catholic teaching and the spiritual life and printed material: the Nihil Obstat or Imprimi Potest and the Imprimatur. If one chooses to publish something and assert that it is in accord with Catholic doctrine, it is submitted to the Censor Deputatus (sometimes listed as Censor Librorum) who has been appointed by the local bishop to oversee this process. The material is reviewed and examined and if the censor deputatus determines it to be in accord with Catholic teaching, it is then given a Nihil Obstat (the Imprimi Potest is given in its place in religious communities as the superiors are the ones to examine the work) and then it is forwarded to the bishop. If the bishop then concurs with the censor deputatus that the work is free from error, an Imprimatur is granted and the book can be published with the Church saying it is in accord with Catholic teaching and tradition. These two endorsements are then printed right by the cover page in a given work. An important distinction to remember is that just because a bishop, priest, nun or theologian write a forward or review for a book does not mean it has a nihil obstat or imprimatur. They could be simply trying to support a good spir- ituality or personal revelation of some sort or possibly - as has been known to occur in some cases – openly heretical ideas while at the same time covering their own bases with the deniability of saying that they did not give it their impri- matur or some such justification. Unless a book on theology, Catholic spirituality or even a prayer book contains the nihil obstat and imprimatur, I would recommend looking at it as purely opinion material – and that can either be correct opinion or incorrect opinion. The name of the game here is safeguarding the deposit of the faith and making sure that we can easily tell whether or not a given work can be considered to contain the actual teaching of the Magisterium and be quoted as the actual position of the Church.
